Breast cancer (BC) morbidity and mortality in Mexico are on the rise, affecting younger women with more frequency. Nutritional factors are often mentioned as determinants of BC but their relevance is not well established in Latin-American countries, where dietary habits show great variation. From a study population previously assembled in Mexico City, 141 histologically confirmed cases of BC were matched by age (+/-3 yr) to an equal number of hospital controls. A food frequency questionnaire was administered to all subjects and the risk of BC was estimated in relation to the intake of selected nutrients. The findings of this study show a protective effect against BC due to a high intake of polyunsaturated fat (odds ratio, OR = 0.10, 95% CI = 0.02-0.40, P for trend = 0.001) and vitamin E (OR = 0.10, 95% CI = 0.02-0.44, P for trend = 0.003) among postmenopausal women. In addition, our findings also suggest that a high intake of total fiber (OR = 0.29, 95% CI = 0.08-1.10, P for trend = 0.080) and carotenes (OR = 0.42, 95% CI = 0.16-1.14, P for trend = 0.088) lowers BC risk among premenopausal women. The relationship between the intake of nutrients and BC risk needs further confirmation. 相似文献

The relationship between soup consumption and folic acid, beta-carotene, and vitamin E and C status was assessed in adults who regularly consumed soup compared to those who did not or who were occasional eaters. Data were obtained for 2114 men and 2874 women living in France and participating in the SU.VI.MAX cohort, who reported twelve 24-hour dietary records during a two-year follow-up period. Six-point-seven percent of women and 8.7% of men were heavy consumers of soup (i.e., they consumed soup from 9-12 days out of 12 days). Respectively, 46 and 42.5% were regular soup consumers (3-8 days out of 12), and 47.3 and 48.8% were occasional or non-soup consumers (0-2 days or less out of 12). Total energy intake did not differ between soup consumers and non-consumers. In both genders, heavy consumers of soups had significantly higher intakes of carbohydrates and lower lipid intakes. Heavy consumers of soup had higher dietary intakes of folates, beta-carotene, vitamin C and, in men, of vitamin E. In heavy consumers, soups contributed 12.5% of total dietary intake of beta-carotene in men and 13% in women. For vitamin C, vitamin E, and folates, soups contributed to 4-5% of total vitamin intake. In heavy soup consumers, mean serum vitamin C levels were higher, but not significantly, than in occasional or non-soup consumers. This trend was also observed for red blood cell folate in women only. The present data suggest that consumption of soup may be beneficial in promotional programs to increase vegetable consumption, and may contribute to a balanced diet and a healthy nutritional status, and especially vitamin status, in the overall population. 相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the functional methodology of Norman H. Anderson in eliciting utilities for health outcomes. Methods: Lay people in Tours, France, rated the undesirability of 40 scenarios of possible outcomes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation
on individual linear scales (Study 1) or on a single long scale (Study 2). The outcomes were either 1 of 8 undesirable outcomes,
combined with 1 of 5 likelihoods, or else complete recovery, combined with the complementary likelihood. Results: The mean utilities were consistent with previous studies. On the individual level, the internal coherence of most participants’
ratings – defined as the consistency and regularity of the graphic representation of their ratings – improved in Study 1 from
their 1st to their 2nd rating. The single scale took less time, but allowed participants to disregard the information about
likelihood. Conclusions: Functional methodology provides a powerful means of checking on the understanding and consistency of each person whose utilities

It has been reported that an antioxidant-rich, blueberry-supplemented rat diet may retard brain aging in the rat. The present study determined whether such supplementation could prevent impaired object recognition memory and elevated levels of the oxidative stress-responsive protein, nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappaB) in aged Fischer-344 rats. Twelve aged rats had been fed a 2% blueberry supplemented diet for 4 months prior to testing. Eleven aged rats and twelve young rats had been fed a control diet. The rats were tested for object recognition memory on the visual paired comparison task. With a 1-h delay between training and testing, aged control diet rats performed no better than chance. Young rats and aged blueberry diet rats performed similarly and significantly better than the aged control diet group. Levels of NF-kappaB in five brain regions of the above subjects were determined by western blotting assays. In four regions, aged control diet rats had significantly higher average NF-kappaB levels than young animals on the control diet. In four regions, aged blueberry diet rats had significantly lower levels of NF-kappaB than aged control diet rats. Normalized NF-kappaB levels (averaged across regions and in several individual regions) correlated negatively and significantly with the object memory scores. 相似文献

Between 1964 and 1970 the authors implanted Hydron gel in 62 patients with nose malformations. The cosmetic defects most frequently operated on were the saddle, and scoliosis of the nasal dorsum. By the end of 1973, 39 of the total number of cases were checked again. In two cases, the gel had to be removed shortly after the operation because of local inflammatory changes. No signs of hypersensitivity could be detected. Calcifications were detected by x-ray examination in 54.2% of the cases. Thirty-four of the patients subjected to the checkup were satisfied with the results of their operations. The authors considered the results to be very good in 16 cases, and unsatisfactory in 6 cases. Calcifications detected by x-ray examination did not affect the final cosmetic effect. None of the examined patients had any complaints in connection with long-term application of the gel. Hydron gel seems to be a suitable implant material in plastic operations of the nose. 相似文献
