The Influence of Different Recycling Scenarios on the Mechanical Design of an LED Weatherproof Light Fitting

This paper analyzes the high relevance of material selection for the sustainable development of an LED weatherproof light fitting. The research reveals how this choice modifies current and future end of life scenarios and can reduce the overall environmental impact. This life cycle assessment has been carried out with Ecotool, a software program especially developed for designers to assess the environmental performance of their designs at the same time that they are working on them. Results show that special attention can be put on the recycling and reusing of the product from the initial stages of development.     

Abnormal electrocardiogram in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mimicking myocardial ischaemia

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that almost exclusively involves motor neurons although autonomic dysfunction has also been reported. We present an 84-year-old female with no documented history of heart disease, who was admitted with negative T waves in the electrocardiogram precordial leads mimicking myocardial ischaemia. No other abnormalities were shown in the rest of the cardiologic evaluation, suggesting autonomic nervous system dysfunction. A neurophysiological study demonstrated acute and chronic denervation in multiple muscles with normal nerve conduction studies, confirming ALS diagnosis. Previous studies have shown that subclinical sympathetic hyperfunction and parasympathetic hypofunction might result in cardiovascular dysfunction in ALS patients. It is important to detect disturbances of autonomic cardiac control because this dysfunction may influence survival and quality of life, leading to a decrease in life expectancy in ALS patients. This Case Report may support the impairment of cardiac autonomic control in patients with ALS.

Computer-aided system for morphometric mandibular index computation (Using dental panoramic radiographs)

Objective: We propose and validate a computer—aided system to measure three different mandibular indexes: cortical width, panoramic mandibular index and, mandibular alveolar bone resorption index. Study Design: Repeatability and reproducibility of the measurements are analyzed and compared to the manual estimation of the same indexes. Results: The proposed computerized system exhibits superior repeatability and reproducibility rates compared to standard manual methods. Moreover, the time required to perform the measurements using the proposed method is negligible compared to perform the measurements manually. Conclusions: We have proposed a very user friendly computerized method to measure three different morphometric mandibular indexes. From the results we can conclude that the system provides a practical manner to perform these measurements. It does not require an expert examiner and does not take more than 16 seconds per analysis. Thus, it may be suitable to diagnose osteoporosis using dental panoramic radiographs. Key words:Osteoporosis, panoramic mandibular index, cortical width, mandibular alveolar bone resorption index.
