Experimental and clinical experiences with double-velour woven Dacron prostheses

Double-velour woven Dacron prostheses were investigated both experimentally and clinically. In 6 mongrel dogs, a tandem conduit between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery was implanted, consisting of a plain woven and a double-velour woven graft. Following explanation after 2, 4, and 6 months, superior healing properties of the double-velour woven prostheses could be assessed by microscopy, as represented by an increase of tissue ingrowth, as well as by a thin and densely adherent inner healing capsule. Double-velour woven grafts were implanted in 50 patients undergoing open heart surgery. All grafts were presealed with fibrin glue and no bleeding could be detected at the time of implantation, even under the adverse influence of full heparinization and extracorporeal circulation.

Zusammenfassung Beschreibung eines Kranken, bei dem es am Ende des Polarwinters zu mannigfachen Störungen im vegetativen System kam: allgemeine Leistungsschwäche und Haltungsverfall, Hypotonie, Hypoglykämie. Grundumsatzsenkung, Störungen des Wasserhaushaltes mit Ödemen, Abnahme von Potenz und Libido, Haarausfall, Zunahme der Körpergröße. Die Veränderungen gingen bei Klimawechsel mit ausreichender Besonnung rasch wieder zurück. Die Fragen der Lichtwirkung auf den Organismus werden besprochen und eine Untersuchungsreihe bei Kriegsblinden, in der sich eine Reihe von vegetativen Störungen ergab, wird mitgeteilt.     

Fast anatomical imaging of the heart and assessment of myocardial perfusion with arrhythmia insensitive magnetization preparation

A new contrast preparation based on modified driven equilibrium Fourier transfer is introduced and evaluated for generation of T₁-weighted images for assessment of the myocardial perfusion with contrast agent first-pass kinetics. The new preparation scheme produces T₁ contrast with insensitivity to arrhythmias in prospectively triggered sequential imaging thereby eliminating one of the major sources of problems in potential patient studies with previously employed contrast preparations schemes.     

The ineffectiveness of the NO-cyclic GMP signaling pathway in the atrial myocardium.

1. This study was performed to determine whether nitric oxide (NO) has direct effects on force of contraction (Fc) in atrial myocardium from rats, rabbits, guinea-pigs, frogs, and man. 2. Glyceryl trinitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, 3-morpholino-sydnonimine hydrochloride (SIN-1), and S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) did not significantly reduce Fc in the various preparations investigated, either given alone or after stimulation of alpha- or beta-adrenoceptors. 3. SNAP did not change the time course of contractions in rat, guinea-pig and human preparations. 4. 8-Bromo-guanosine-3':5'-cyclic monophosphate (8-Br-cyclic GMP) produced a negative inotropic effect in rat, guinea-pig and human atrial preparations and shortened time to peak tension and relaxation time in human preparations. 5. High K+ (85 mmol l-1)-induced contracture in rat heart muscle was reduced by 8-Br-cyclic GMP but not by SIN-1. 6. N-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA), an inhibitor of NO synthase, failed to influence muscarinic effects on Fc or frequency from rat and guinea-pig hearts. 7. We conclude that NO, under the experimental conditions described here, has no direct effects on the heart, although cyclic GMP may be involved in the regulation of myocardial contraction.     

Single-shot two-echo technique for simultaneous measurement of GABA and creatine in the human brain in vivo.

A single-shot, two-echo method for the simultaneous detection of multiple-quantum (MQ)-filtered gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and creatine (Cr) was developed and demonstrated in the human brain in vivo at 3 Tesla. The simultaneously measured Cr singlet served as a navigator for the spectral phase of GABA and any frequency shift during measurements due to drift in the static magnetic field (B(0)) or subject movement, as well as an internal concentration reference. In addition, the use of a double-band frequency-selective MQ filter for C(3) and C(4) methylene protons of GABA provided a very robust measurement of GABA, with excellent suppression of overlapping metabolites such as Cr and glutathione (GSH) in each single scan. Contamination from overlapping macromolecules was also demonstrated to be negligible with this method. The GABA-to-Cr ratio was 0.09 +/- 0.03 (mean +/- SD, N = 17) and the estimated concentration of GABA in the frontoparietal region of the human brain in vivo was 0.66 +/- 0.19 micromol/g (mean +/- SD, N = 17) with the internal reference method, and 0.69 +/- 0.18 micromol/g (mean +/- SD, N = 17) with the external reference method. The observed pattern of GABA doublet was consistent among all subjects, with a frequency separation of approximately 13 Hz.
