This study aimed to investigate and compare the efficacy of selected root canal irrigants and a medicament on a clinical isolate of Enterococcus faecalis grown as biofilm or planktonic suspension phenotype. A cell-dense pellet "presentation" prepared from planktonic phenotype was also tested. Each bacterial presentation was exposed to calcium hydroxide (pH 12.3), 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate, 17% ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic acid, 10% povidone iodine, or 3.0% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for a range of time periods (1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 30, and 60 min). Phosphate buffered saline was used as a control agent. The difference in gradients of bacterial killing among the biofilm, planktonic suspension or pellet presentation was significant (p < 0.05) and dependent upon the test agent except in the case of NaOCl and calcium hydroxide where no difference could be detected. NaOCl was the most effective agent and achieved 100% kills for all presentations of E. faecalis after a 2 min contact time.  相似文献

Objective: The standard imaging techniques used in dentistry consist of two-dimensional radiographic techniques like intraoral periapical (PA) radiographs, bitewings or extraoral panoramic X-rays. Three-dimensional methods, such as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), are not standard procedures. In several fields of dentistry, such as oral surgery or implantology, dental magnetic resonance imaging (DMRI), a technique without radiation exposure, has already been introduced as a new promising diagnostic tool. The aim of this study was to compare the agreement of DMRI and PA radiographs in measuring residual periodontal bone support.

Material and methods: In this study, the residual periodontal bone support of 21 teeth was investigated and compared with DMRI and PA radiographs by two independent raters. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated using the software R to identify the intra-rater and inter-rater agreement of the two modalities. Bland–Altman plots were created to directly compare the two methods.

Results: Overall, all calculated ICC values showed an excellent intra-rater and inter-rater agreement (>0.9) for DMRI, as well as PA radiographs. Bland–Altman analysis also showed a strong agreement between both diagnostic methods in this study.

Conclusions: In conclusion, there was a strong agreement between DMRI and PA. Thus, DMRI proved to be a comparable method to PA radiographs for evaluating the proportion of residual periodontal bone support.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of platelet-rich plasma, autologous bone, and autologous fibrinogen as cryoprecipitate in maxillary sinus augmentation procedures. Six patients (age range, 29-58) undergoing sinus augmentation procedures were included in the study. Platelet-rich plasma and autologous fibrinogen in the form of cryoprecipitate were prepared from 300 ml of blood. Sinus augmentation was performed with intraoral bone grafts, platelet-rich plasma, and cryoprecipitate. The amount of regeneration was then evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively with Spiral TC (Dentascan) pre- and postoperatively 6 months after the intervention. Orthopantomography was performed preoperatively 3 and 6 months after the surgery. A mean platelet concentration of 320.5% was obtained from the baseline platelet blood count. The tomographic analysis indicated an average bone augmentation of 6.27 mm (range, 3.5-10 mm). Radiologically, a satisfactory morphological recovery of the maxillary jaw was obtained. No graft resorption was noticed. Orthopantomography indicated mineralization as early as 3 months postoperatively in the entire study population. This technique appeared to be safe and effective. Our preliminary results encourage the clinical use of platelet-rich plasma associated with cryoprecipitate.  相似文献

Being aware of the morphologic differences in the nasal anatomy between men and women during the cosmetic rhinoplasty is essential because feminization of a male nose is not a very rare complication. Although there is no difference in the techniques of male and female rhinoplasty, the anthropometric differences have to be considered. This morphometric study evaluated the nasal shapes in both sexes and the related differences in the nostril forms. The nostril forms were separated into 4 main groups such as teardrop, heart shaped, round, and triangular. In this landmark-based morphometric study, significant relations of nostril forms to the nasal shape, frontonasal, and nasolabial angles were found. The results of this study should make us think about these relations of nostril forms to the nasal shapes and should be a basement for further clinical studies enhancing the plans of the corrective surgery.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: Experimental glass-silica-metal hybrid composites (polycomposites) were developed and tested mechanically and radiographically in this fundamental pilot study. To determine whether mechanical properties of a glass-silica filled two-paste dental composite based on a Bis-GMA/polyglycol dimethacrylate blend could be improved through the incorporation of titanium (Ti) particles (particle size ranging from 1 to 3 microm) or silver-tin-copper (Ag-Sn-Cu) particles (particle size ranging from 1 to 50 microm) we measured the diametral tensile strength, fracture toughness and radiopacity of five composites.METHODS: The five materials were: I, the original unmodified composite (control group); II, as group I but containing 5% (wt/wt) of Ti particles; III, as group II but with Ti particles treated with 4-methacryloyloxyethyl trimellitate anhydride (4-META) to promote Ti-resin bonding; IV, as group I but containing 5% (wt/wt) of Ag-Sn-Cu particles; and V, as group IV but with the metal particles treated with 4-META. Ten specimens of each group were tested in a standard diametral tensile strength test and a fracture toughness test using a single-edge notched sample design and five specimens of each group were tested using a radiopacity test.RESULTS: The diametral tensile strength increased statistically significantly after incorporation of Ti treated with 4-META, as tested by ANOVA (P=0.004) and Fisher's LSD test. A statistically significant increase of fracture toughness was observed between the control group and groups II, III and V as tested by ANOVA (P=0.003) and Fisher's LSD test. All other groups showed no statistically significant increase in diametral tensile strength and fracture toughness respectively when compared to their control groups. No statistically significant increase in radiopacity was found between the control group and the Ti filled composite, whereas a statistically significant increase in radiopacity was found between the control group and the Ag-Sn-Cu filled composite as tested by ANOVA (P=0.000) and Fisher's LSD procedure.SIGNIFICANCE: The introduction of titanium and silver-tin-copper fillers has potential as added components in composites to provide increased mechanical strength and radiopacity, for example for use in core materials.  相似文献

PURPOSE: This cross-sectional study was performed to determine whether an association exists between the width of keratinized mucosa and the health of implant-supporting tissues. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data on 200 dental implants were collected. Periodontal parameters measured included Plaque Index, Gingival Index, width of keratinized mucosa, thickness of keratinized mucosa, radiographic bone level, and bleeding on probing. Statistical analysis was accomplished with the t test, Wilcoxon rank sum test, and logistic and linear regression models. Significance was established when P was less than .05. RESULTS: The mean Gingival Index score, Plaque Index score, and radiographic bone loss were significantly higher for those implants with a narrow zone (< 2 mm) of keratinized mucosa. Implants with a narrow zone of keratinized mucosa also were more likely to bleed upon probing, even after adjusting for Plaque Index, smoking, thickness of the gingiva, and time since implant placement (adjusted odds ratio, 2.37; 95% confidence interval, 1.04 to 5.83). Significant independent association also was found between the width of keratinized mucosa and radiographic bone loss in favor of wider zone of keratinized mucosa. CONCLUSION: Increased width of keratinized mucosa around implants is associated with lower mean alveolar bone loss and improved indices of soft tissue health.  相似文献

Purpose: This retrospective study assessed the health of peri-implant tissues in patients with varying severity of chronic periodontitis.
Materials and Methods: Sixty-one subjects aged 44 to 70 years (median age 58 years) were recruited. Based on severity of periodontitis, 31 subjects were classified as having severe generalized chronic periodontitis, and the remaining 30 subjects had mild or no periodontitis. Social and medical histories were obtained from each patient. A comprehensive periodontal examination included: plaque index, gingival index, bleeding index, probing depth, clinical attachment level, and radiographic bone loss. Data were analyzed using Fisher's exact and chi-square tests for categorical variables, and t -test for continuous variables.
Results: There was a statistically significant greater loss of attachment ( p  < .05) around implants in the group with severe periodontitis compared to the no/mild periodontitis group.
Conclusion: Because of the greater loss of clinical attachment around implants placed in patients with generalized severe chronic periodontitis, close monitoring of these patients is suggested to prevent both development of peri-implantitis and recurrence of periodontal infection.  相似文献

A critical factor that needs to be evaluated during the diagnosis and treatment planning phase for patients seeking an implant-tissue-supported overdenture or metal-resin implant fixed denture is the presence of adequate interarch distance. The amount of interarch distance is critical to the selection of appropriate implant abutments and attachments for both implant-tissue-supported overdentures and metal-resin implant fixed complete dentures. This clinical report describes a patient with complications related to the failure to diagnose inadequate interarch distance, and the methods used to resolve the patient's chief complaint. A guide for abutment-attachment selection using one commercially available implant system is given.  相似文献
