Case-control studies by examining the lumbar spine computed tomography (CT) findings focusing on the spinous processes.“Passing spine” was defined as a lumbar degenerative change observed on CT images. In contrast, kissing spine, which is also an image finding, has been acknowledged as an established clinical condition. Therefore, we compared the passing spine group and the kissing spine group to investigate whether the 2 groups belong to a similar disease group; this would help explain the clinical and imaging characteristics of patients with passing spine.Previous studies have described the gradual increase in the height and thickness of the lumbar vertebral spinous processes that can occur in individuals aged >40 years, and reported that this progressive degeneration can lead to a condition termed “kissing spine.”We examined the CT imaging of 373 patients with lumbar spinal disease and divided patients into 2 groups, the kissing spine (K) group and the passing spine (P) group, and compared the clinical (age, sex, presence/absence of lower extremity pain) and imaging data (localization of kissing or passing spine, intervertebral disc height at the level of kissing or passing spine, lumbar lordosis (LL) angle, presence/absence of vacuum phenomenon (VP) in the intervertebral discs and spondylolisthesis at the level of kissing or passing spine between the 2 groups.Compared with patients with kissing spine, patients with passing spine had an increased incidence of lower extremity pain, lower intervertebral disc height at the level of passing spine, relatively static LL, and VP commonly observed in the intervertebral discs at the level of passing spine.Because the clinical and imaging characteristics of patients with passing spine are different from those of patients with kissing spine, passing spine might be a pathological condition distinct from kissing spine.  相似文献

Background:In recent years, the functional movement screen (FMS) and FMS training have attracted attention as a means of preventing injury, but no studies have examined the effect of such training in high-school baseball players. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of FMS training on FMS score, physical function and baseball performance in high-school baseball players.Methods:Subjects in this randomized controlled clinical trial were high-school male baseball players assigned to either an FMS training group (intervention group) or a control group. The intervention group performed FMS training 4 times per week for 12 weeks. FMS ability, physical function, and baseball performance were measured prior to the intervention, 8, 12, and 24 weeks after the intervention in the subjects’ school environment.Results:A total of 71 baseball players aged 15 to 17 years were recruited and assigned to either an intervention group (n = 37) or control group (n = 34). There was no significant difference in the characteristics of participants between the 2 groups. Most FMS scores improved to 12 weeks after continued training. In the intervention group compared with the control group, deep squat, hurdle step, inline lunge, active straight leg raise, trunk stability push-up and rotary stability FMS score, total FMS score and eyes closed single leg stance time significantly increased after 8 weeks of training. While hurdle step, inline lunge, active straight leg raise, trunk stability push-up, total FMS score, and eyes closed single leg stance time significantly increased, pitching ball speed significantly decreased at the end of the 12 week training period. Eyes closed single leg stance time and feeling of fatigue significantly improved 12 weeks after training. The number of subjects who scored less than 14 for the total FMS score in the intervention group compared with control group were significantly less after 8 and 12 weeks of FMS training.Conclusion:FMS training for 8 weeks contributes to improving FMS scores for high-school baseball players, but FMS scores go down if FMS training is not continued.Trial registration:University Hospital Medical Information Network Center, Tokyo, Japan: UMIN000027553. Both radiation and stresses cause detrimental effects on humans. Besides possible health effects resulting directly from radiation exposure, the nuclear plant accident is a cause of social psychological stresses. A recent study showed that chronic restraint-induced stresses (CRIS) attenuated Trp53 functions and increased carcinogenesis susceptibility of Trp53-heterozygous mice to total-body X-irradiation (TBXI), having a big impact on the academic world and a sensational effect on the public, especially the residents living in radioactively contaminated areas. It is important to investigate the possible modification effects from CRIS on radiation-induced health consequences in Trp53 wild-type (Trp53wt) animals. Prior to a carcinogenesis study, effects of TBXI on the hematopoietic system under CRIS were investigated in terms of hematological abnormality in the peripheral blood and residual damage in the bone marrow erythrocytes using a mouse restraint model. Five-week-old male Trp53wt C57BL/6J mice were restrained 6 h per day for 28 consecutive days, and TBXI (4 Gy) was given on the 8th day. Results showed that CRIS alone induced a marked decrease in the red blood cell (RBC) and the white blood cell (WBC) count, while TBXI caused significantly lower counts of RBCs, WBCs and blood platelets, and a lower concentration of hemoglobin regardless of CRIS. CRIS alone did not show any significant effect on erythrocyte proliferation and on induction of micronucleated erythrocytes, whereas TBXI markedly inhibited erythrocyte proliferation and induced a significant increase in the incidences of micronucleated erythrocytes, regardless of CRIS. These findings suggest that CRIS does not have a significant impact on radiation-induced detrimental effects on the hematopoietic system in Trp53wt mice.  相似文献

Objectives

Although carotid artery structural variations have been detected by ultrasound, their clinical significance is not fully understood. The objective of this study was to determine whether the angle between the common carotid artery (CCA) and the internal carotid artery (ICA), designated angle α, an ultrasound-detectable carotid artery structural variation, is related to carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT), a surrogate marker for carotid atherosclerosis.

Methods

As a cross-sectional study, we measured angle α in routine carotid artery ultrasounds from 176 subjects (130 men) with atherosclerotic disease/risk factors that attended Kouseiren Hospital in Kagoshima City, Japan between August 2007 and April 2009. We evaluated the correlation between the angle α and CCA- or ICA-IMT.

Results

Angle α was weakly correlated with age but significantly correlated with ICA-IMT. The correlation was stronger in subjects with an ICA-IMT ≥ 0.5 mm than in those with an ICA-IMT < 0.5 mm (Right side r = 0.475 vs. 0.246, Left side r = 0.498 vs. 0.301, respectively). Upon multivariate logistic regression analysis, angle α and serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were independent explanatory variables for ICA-IMT.

Conclusion

Angle α is related to ICA-IMT in subjects with atherosclerotic disease or risk factors in this study.

We herein report a 65-year-old man with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) after 2-year remission from acute myeloid leukemia who developed recurrent episodes of left hemiparesis with gadolinium enhancement on magnetic resonance imaging. Steroid pulse therapy for each exacerbation induced clinical and radiological improvement, suggesting that exacerbations are an excessive immune response to the JC virus and distinct from immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). Although glucocorticoids are recommended only for IRIS, steroid pulse therapy should be considered as a therapeutic option in cases of exacerbation of hematologic malignancy-associated PML. Importantly, neuroimaging is not sufficient to differentiate excessive inflammation from a controlled inflammatory response, for which steroids are not recommended.  相似文献
