Our previous studies have shown that the plasma norethindrone (NET) elimination is faster in women of low socio-economic group as compared to those of high socio-economic group. Undernutrition being very common in low socio-economic group, using an animal model, efforts were made to determine whether these differences were due to differences in the nutritional status of these two group of women. The experimental animals consisted of a set of twelve female rabbits, divided equally into two groups. One group (A) was fed on a stock diet ad libitum while the second group (B) received the diet in restricted amounts (half of that consumed by animals of group A). At the end of three months, radiolabelled NET was administered intravenously and plasma drug levels were determined at frequent intervals up to 24 hours. The plasma values were subjected to pharmacokinetic analysis. Food restriction to the extent of 50% resulted in a 20% deficit of body weight as compared to controls. The half-lives of alpha and beta phases were shortened in the restricted group resulting in an enhanced metabolic clearance rate of NET in this group. Though the differences were not statistically significant, the volume of distribution tended to be lower and the dose excreted in urine higher when food restriction was imposed.  相似文献

We describe here the clinical significance of coinfection with Theileria orientalis and Babesia ovata in cattle. Anemia status in a herd of dairy cattle in Japan was investigated in relation to infection with these parasites. Our findings indicate that while B. ovata infection might not be the primary cause of anemia in the cattle, it may contribute to the clinical development of anemia in animals coinfected with both B. ovata and T. orientalis.  相似文献

Protein energy malnutrition and inflammation are common and usually concurrent in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. Carnitine, a small molecule involved in fatty acid metabolism, is significantly decreased in long-term HD patients. L-Carnitine supplementation may have potential benefits in improving dialysis-related disorders. However, there are conflicting reports with regard to the beneficial effects of L-Carnitine supplementation. Hence, the present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of L-Carnitine supplementation on lipid parameters, apoproteins and inflammatory and nutritional markers in HD patients. A total of 35 patients with end-stage renal disease, on MHD for a period of 2 to 5 years were recruited into the study. The study group consisted of 20 patients who received Carnitine supplementation intravenously three times a week after each HD session, at 1 g/dose, while the control group consisted of 15 patients without supplementation with L-Carnitine. Highly sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), total protein, albumin, lipid profile and apoprotein AI and B were determined at baseline and at the end of the study. A significant decrease in the hsCRP levels was observed in the Carnitine-supplemented group (P < 0.05). However, no significant change was observed in the lipid parameters and nutritional markers in the Carnitine-supplemented group. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates the significant benefit of L-Carnitine supplementation on inflammatory status in MHD patients as noted by marked decrease in hsCRP levels in comparison with the control group.  相似文献

Polycythemia is a known paraneopastic manifestation of hepatoma, but only in the presence of alpha-fetopro (AFP). We present a case of polycythemia in the absence of AFP, and suggest concurrent alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency as the cause for breaking this rule. We also suggest a reason for the apparent constant conjunction between polycythemia and AFP in hepatoma.  相似文献

Insulin-like growth factors I and II are known to regulate the development of the CNS. We examined the developmental changes in insulin-like growth factor I and insulin-like growth factor II expression in the postnatal rat corpus callosum. Insulin-like growth factor I and insulin-like growth factor II mRNA expression increased at 3 days as compared with 1 day whereas the protein expression increased up to 7 days. Insulin-like growth factor I and insulin-like growth factor II immunoexpression was specifically localized in round cells confirmed by double immunofluorescence with OX-42 to be the amoeboid microglial cells. Insulin-like growth factor I expression was observed up to 7 days in amoeboid microglial cells while insulin-like growth factor II expression was detected in 1-3 day old rats. Exposure of primary rat microglial cell cultures to lipopolysaccharide increased insulin-like growth factor I and insulin-like growth factor II mRNA and protein expression significantly along with their immunoexpression in microglial cells. The lipopolysaccharide-induced increase in insulin-like growth factor I and insulin-like growth factor II mRNA and protein expression was significantly decreased with all-trans-retinoic acid. We conclude that insulin-like growth factor I and insulin-like growth factor II expression in amoeboid microglial cells in the developing brain is related to their activation. Once the activation is inhibited, either by transformation of the amoeboid microglial cells into ramified microglia regarded as resting cells or as shown by the effect of all-trans-retinoic acid administration, insulin-like growth factor I and insulin-like growth factor II mRNA and protein expression is downregulated.  相似文献

Thurston syndrome (oro-facial-digital syndrome type V) is an autosomal recessive condition characterized by median cleft of the upper lip, postaxial polydactyly of hands and feet, and oral manifestations. According to earlier reports, the syndrome is predominantly seen in subjects of Indian descent. We report a cast of Thurston syndrome in a 13-year-old south Indian boy who presented with oral features, incomplete median cleft of upper lip, and polydactyly of both hands and left foot. A precise clinical differentiation must be made since considerable overlap of the features of the various other forms could give rise to difficulties in diagnosing the condition.  相似文献
