Lymphocytes which differentiate in an allogeneic thymus

Nude mice which have been grafted with an allogeneic H-2-incompatible thymus are frequently specifically tolerant to skin grafts from the thymus donor strain. The evidence presented here indicates that both clonal deletion and peripheral suppressor cells play a part in maintaining this tolerance.     

A Comparison of the Effects of the Inhalation of 4% and 8% Fluroxene in the Pregnant Primate

A comparison was made of the effects of inhalation of 4% fluroxene (n = 5) and 8% fluroxene (n = 5) in pregnant monkeys. Measurements of maternal arterial blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, total peripheral resistance, uterine blood flow, fetal heart rate and arterial blood pressure, and maternal and fetal blood gas levels were made. Inhalation of 4% fluroxene for 20 minutes produced little change in maternal hemodynamics and was well tolerated by the fetus. Fluroxene 8% inhaled for a similar 20-minute-period produced a significant decrease in maternal blood pressure (--27%), total peripheral resistance (--32%), and uterine blood flow (--27%) and lowered the level of maternal fetal exchange.     

Computer-Assisted Clinimetric Tool for the Study of Facial Expression

Clinimetrics is the measurement of clinical phenomena; more specifically, it is mensuration, the act of acquiring and labeling basic raw data that is used to describe or measure symptoms, signs, and other distinctly clinical phenomena. ^1. Over the last 5 years, a new computer method for measuring facial expression has been developed. Refinement and validation of this technique are necessary before clinical applications are appropriate. Four hundred fifty data points from two human observers and the computed method were compared with one another by using indices of location, dispersion, and association within the framework of the logical construct of validity. These results suggest that the computed method is valid. This new method may be nearly ready for clinical applications as a primary or adjunctive clinimetric tool.     

Diagnostic and therapeutic blocks in pain therapy.

The skillful use of nerve blocks is important as a diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic tool in the management of chronic and acute pain problems. It is important that these blocks be performed not as technical exercises, but with responsibility, skill, and understanding--and in collaboration with both the patient and fellow physicians, so as to minimize or avoid harmful side effects and give the earliest possible relief from suffering.
