New contribution to the ethnopharmacological study of the Canary Islands

We present in this paper a report of 155 species used for medicinal purpose in the Canary Islands. These species have been compiled in 13 tables in accordance with their main medicinal use, indicating also other possible popular uses. We have made a short inventory of the rates of the most important medicinal applications. This new compilation shows once more the traditional use of the phytotherapeutic resources by the Canary population and also the wide possibilities of the phytochemical and pharmacological investigations of the Canary Islands Flora.     

Musculoskeletal neoplasms after intraarterial chemotherapy: correlation of MR images with pathologic specimens

The most accurate prognostic indicator in patients with musculoskeletal sarcomas is the percentage of tumor necrosis after intraarterial chemotherapy. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was evaluated to determine its ability to indicate the percentage of necrosis in musculoskeletal neoplasms after treatment. Fourteen patients with musculoskeletal neoplasms underwent treatment protocols including intraarterial chemotherapy (n = 14), radiation therapy (n = 6), and systemic chemotherapy (n = 14). All patients underwent MR imaging before and after treatment, and all underwent either limb salvage surgery (n = 8) or amputation (n = 6) within 1 week of the last MR examination. Standard unehanced spin-echo T1-, spin-density-, and T2-weighted MR sequences were used. The MR images were compared with the pathologic specimens. On T2-weighted images, the signal intensities of viable tumor, tumor necrosis, edema, hemorrhage, and necrosis overlapped. With the unenhanced spin-echo technique, MR imaging cannot be used to predict the percentage of tumor necrosis in musculoskeletal neoplasms after intraarterial chemotherapy.     

Long-term alcohol consumption alters dorsal striatal dopamine release and regulation by D2 dopamine receptors in rhesus macaques

The dorsal striatum (DS) is implicated in behavioral and neural processes including action control and reinforcement. Alcohol alters these processes in rodents, and it is believed that the development of alcohol use disorder involves changes in DS dopamine signaling. In nonhuman primates, the DS can be divided into caudate and putamen subregions. As part of a collaborative effort examining the effects of long-term alcohol self-administration in rhesus macaques, we examined DS dopamine signaling using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry. We found that chronic alcohol self-administration resulted in several dopamine system adaptations. Most notably, dopamine release was altered in a sex- and region-dependent manner. Following long-term alcohol consumption, male macaques, regardless of abstinence status, had reduced dopamine release in putamen, while only male macaques in abstinence had reduced dopamine release in caudate. In contrast, female macaques had enhanced dopamine release in the caudate, but not putamen. Dopamine uptake was also enhanced in females, but not males (regardless of abstinence state). We also found that dopamine D2/3 autoreceptor function was reduced in male, but not female, alcohol drinkers relative to control groups. Finally, we found that blockade of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors inhibited evoked dopamine release in nonhuman primates. Altogether, our findings demonstrate that long-term alcohol consumption can sex-dependently alter dopamine release, as well as its feedback control mechanisms in both DS subregions.Subject terms: Addiction, Reward     

Percutaneous drainage of chest abscesses in children

Seven patients ranging in age from 3 to 18 years underwent percutaneous drainage of eight intrathoracic abscesses. Five of the abscesses were mediastinal or paramediastinal and resulted from esophageal perforation or esophageal anastomotic leakage. The abscesses resolved in each case, with a mean catheter drainage time of 28 days and no need for surgical intervention. Three of the abscesses were intrapulmonary, and each lay adjacent to a pleural surface. All three lung abscesses resolved within 19-24 days, without thoracotomy or wedge resection.     

Arteriovenous fistula of the cecum diagnosed by digital angiography

We report the case of a 69 year-old female, with cardiac disease, hypertension, and chronic renal failure treated by hemodialysis; she had several episodes of gastrointestinal hemorrhage, which could not be diagnosed by conventional methods. Digital angiographic study demonstrated the exact cause: it allowed to localize an arterio-venous malformation. A right hemicolectomy was performed and the pathologic study showed the presence of an arteriovenous fistula. Three years later the patient is free of symptoms. We recommend digital angiography in cases of gastrointestinal hemorrhage of unknown or unclear etiology, particularly in patients in chronic renal failure, on the basis of the association of hemodialysis and arteriovenous malformation.     

Epidural and subarachnoidal pneumocephalus after epidural technique.

Iatrogenic pneumocephalus is an uncommon complication observed after using the 'loss-of-resistance' technique with an air filled syringe. We report and review two cases of pneumocephalus: one subarachnoid and the other epidural.
