The disentangling of early sensory information processing deficits and examination of their relationships to demographic and clinical factors are important steps for the validation of potential biomarkers and/or endophenotypes of schizophrenia. The aims of the present study were to characterize commonly used sensory event-related potential deficits, to determine whether they are (1) distinct from one another and (2) independently associated with important clinical characteristics.
Methods
MMN, P3a and RON event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded from schizophrenia patients (SZ; n = 429) and nonpsychiatric comparison subjects (NCS; n = 286). Subgroup analyses on demographic and clinical variables were performed.
Results
Schizophrenia patients exhibited robust ERP deficits at frontocentral electrodes (MMN: d = 1.10; P3a: d = 0.87; RON: d = 0.77), consistent with previous studies. Each ERP component uniquely accounted for variance in amplitude and schizophrenia deficits. Amplitude reductions occurred with increasing age in both NCS and SZ patients. A small subset of patients prescribed combinations of 1st and 2nd generation antipsychotics exhibited significantly reduced MMN amplitude relative to other medication-defined subgroups.
Conclusions
MMN, P3a, and RON are dissociable deficits with distinct relationships to age and medication status in schizophrenia patients, potentially reflecting divergent pathophysiological processes. Reduced MMN in patients taking multiple antipsychotic medications appear to be attributable to greater severity of symptoms and functional impairments, rather than a medication effect.
Significance
Independent information processing deficits in schizophrenia patients may differentially contribute to the commonly observed deficits in neurocognitive and psychosocial functioning. 相似文献

Purpose: To validate the assistive technology “Drugs: reflection for prevention” to be used with visually impaired people.Method: Quantitative and quasi-experimental study, contrasting knowledge before and after the use of the assistive technology with 140 visually impaired people in institutes and associations for people with visual impairment. A questionnaire with identification data, a pre-test, a post-test and a questionnaire to assess the assistive technology were applied. Data were described through means and standard deviations, and analyses included the McNemar test, the exact binomial distribution test, and the intraclass correlation coefficient.Results: Participants were male (65.7%), 84.3% were blind, aged 37.1?years on average and with schooling of 10.1?years on average. There were more correct answers in the post-test (p?<.001). The attributes of the assistive technology were considered adequate: objectives, access, clarity, structure and presentation, relevance and efficacy, and interactivity (p?<.001).Conclusions: The assistive technology “Drugs: reflection for prevention” was considered valid and reliable to inform visually impaired people about psychoactive substance abuse.

Introduction: This study explores the reliability and responsiveness of neuromuscular ultrasound in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Methods: Investigations were conducted with 10 healthy controls, 10 patients with ALS (single point in time), and 10 different patients with ALS (followed over 6 months; 4 completed follow-up). Ultrasound was used to measure the thickness of the geniohyoid, bilateral biceps/brachialis, bilateral tibialis anterior, and bilateral hemidiaphragms (at inspiration and expiration). Interrater and intrarater reliability and change in muscle thickness over 6 months were measured. Results: Interrater correlation coefficients ranged between 0.80 and 0.99 in healthy controls and between 0.78 and 0.97 in patients with ALS. Intrarater correlation coefficients ranged between 0.83 and 0.98 in healthy controls. The mean percentage decline in muscle thickness over 6 months was 20.25%. Discussion: Muscle ultrasound appears to be a reliable technique for measuring important muscles in patients with ALS. Background: Aging could exacerbate the decreases in cognitive functioning already caused by noise pollution. According to the inhibitory deficit hypothesis, older adults have more difficulty than do younger adults keeping irrelevant information from interfering with processing of relevant information. However, irrelevant speech studies typically fail to support this hypothesis. The present study aimed to quantify the effects of age and noise pollution on reading comprehension.
Methods: Seventeen younger (age 21–29) and 15 older (age 62–77) adults completed a reading task (reading discourse material for a follow-up comprehension test) in the presence of six irrelevant background noise conditions. Repeated measures ANOVAs and t tests were used to analyze participant accuracy on the follow-up comprehension tests.
Results: Contrary to the inhibitory deficit hypothesis, but congruent with previous irrelevant speech studies, younger and older adults did not have significantly different reading comprehension scores, and both groups’ accuracy was greatest when asked to read in silence. Noise conditions that contained English speech, regardless of whether this background noise was spoken or sung, were most disruptive.
Conclusion: Younger and older adults appear to be equally influenced by irrelevant background material when reading. Regardless of age, reading in a distraction-free environment whenever possible is the best way to maximize reading comprehension. 相似文献
Surgical site infection (SSI) is common following arterial surgery involving a groin incision. There is a lack of evidence regarding interventions to prevent groin wound SSI, therefore, a survey of vascular clinicians was undertaken to assess current opinion and practice, equipoise and feasibility of a randomised controlled trial (RCT). Participants at the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland 2021 Annual Scientific Meeting were surveyed regarding three separate interventions designed to prevent SSI in the groin; impregnated incise drapes, diakylcarbomoyl chloride dressings and antibiotic impregnated collagen sponges. Results were collated via an online survey using the Research Electronic Data Capture platform. Seventy-five participants completed the questionnaire, most were consultant vascular surgeons (50/75, 66.7%). The majority agree that groin wound SSI is a major problem (73/75, 97.3%), and would be content using either of the three interventions (51/61, 83.6%) and had clinical equipoise to randomise patients to any of the three interventions versus standard of care (70/75, 93.3%). There was some reluctance to not use impregnated incise drapes as may be considered “standard of care”. Groin wound SSI is perceived as major problem in vascular surgery, and a multicentre RCT of three preventative interventions appears acceptable to vascular surgeons. 相似文献
Aim: Differentiating between parathyroid lesions is still difficult and ambiguous. In cases of primary hyperparathyroidism, appropriate and prompt diagnosis is of great importance for effective treatment and follow-up. A great amount of mechanisms contribute to the pathogenesis of primary hyperparathyroidism, such as disturbance in balance between pro- and anti-apoptotic factors. Therefore, we examined whether immunohistochemical expression of apoptotic factors, TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and Fas, could have clinical utility as a marker of proliferative lesions of parathyroid gland. Materials and methods: Parathyroid specimens of 58 consecutive patients who had undertaken surgery due to primary hyperparathyroidism were incubated with purified mouse monoclonal antihuman antibodies: anti-TRAIL and anti-Fas. Staining was considered positive when at least 5% of the cells showed immunoreactivity. Results: The percentage of cells which were positively stained for TRAIL in parathyroid hyperplasia was 9.65%, in parathyroid adenoma 8.31%, and in normal controls 2.24%. Immunoreactivity for TRAIL was detected in 91.89% of parathyroid hyperplasias, 85.71% of parathyroid adenomas, and none in healthy glands. The percentage of cells with a positive reaction to Fas in parathyroid hyperplasia was 8.92%, in parathyroid adenoma 8.09%, and in normal tissue 1.9%. The expression of Fas was found in 94.59% of parathyroid hyperplasias, 90.48% of parathyroid adenomas, and none in healthy glands. Conclusions: In our study, hyperplasias demonstrated the highest expression of TRAIL and Fas, whereas in adenomas it was increased compared to normal tissue, but lower than in hyperplasias. Bone undergoes continuous remodeling by a coupled action between osteoblasts and osteoclasts. During osteoporosis, osteoclast activity is often elevated leading to increased bone destruction. Hence, osteoclasts are deemed as potential therapeutic targets to alleviate bone loss. Ellagic acid (EA) is a polyphenol reported to possess anticancer, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its effects on osteoclast formation and function have not yet been examined. Here, we explored the effects of EA on RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation in RAW264.7 murine macrophages (in vitro) and human CD14+monocytes (ex vivo). EA dose-dependently attenuated RANKL-induced TRAP+ osteoclast formation in osteoclast progenitors with maximal inhibition seen at 1 µM concentration without cytotoxicity. Moreover, owing to perturbed osteoclastogenesis, EA disrupted actin ring formation and bone resorptive function of osteoclasts. Analysis of the underlying molecular mechanisms revealed that EA suppressed the phosphorylation and activation of the p38 MAP kinase pathway which subsequently impaired the RANKL-induced differentiation of osteoclast progenitors. Taken together, these novel results indicate that EA alleviates osteoclastogenesis by suppressing the p38 signaling pathway downstream of RANKL and exerts inhibitory effects on bone resorption and actin ring formation. 相似文献
