La animación científica en atención primaria

The scientific method is capable of being applied in primary care. In this article we defend the role of the “scientific entertainer “as strategic and necessary in achieving this goal. The task has to include playful and light-hearted content. We explore some words in English that may help us to understand the concept of “scientific entertainer” from a semantic point of view (showman, master of ceremonies, entrepreneur, go-between) also in Spanish language (counsellor, mediator, methodologist) and finally in Latin and Greek (tripalium, negotium, chronos, kairos). We define the clinical, manager or research health-worker who is skilled in primary care as a “primarylogist”.     

Conjunctivitis with Regional Lymphadenopathy in a Trainee Microbiologist

We report a case of conjunctival tuberculosis in a trainee microbiologist caused by direct inoculation. The resident strain was analyzed by DNA fingerprinting, and an identical pattern was found in an isolate from sputum handled by the resident. After 6 months of treatment, the patient was cured.     

Study of the uses of Information and Communication Technologies by Pain Treatment Unit Physicians

Adequate use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in health has been shown to save the patient and caregiver time, improve access to the health system, improve diagnosis and control of disease or treatment. All this results in cost savings, and more importantly, they help improve the quality of service and the lives of patients. The purpose of this study is to analyse the differences in the uses of this ICTs between those physicians that belong to Pain Treatment Units (PU) and other physicians that work in pain not linked to these PUs. An online survey, generated by Netquest online survey tool, was sent to both groups of professionals and the data collected was statistical analysed through a logistic regression methodology which is the Logit binomial model. Our results show that those physicians that belong to PUs use ICTs more frequently and consider it more relevant to their clinical practice.     

Systemic photosensitivity due to a contraceptive patch

Hormonal contraceptives are a known but rarely reported cause of photosensitivity. A 35-year-old female developed several episodes of a prurigionous papulovesicular eruption located on sun-exposed areas that resolved without scarring in days. She had been using a transdermal contraceptive (EVRA^®: norelgestromin and ethinyloestradiol) for 3 years, and once it was stopped, the patient became asymptomatic. She had another episode after the use of oral contraceptives (YAZ^®: ethinyloestradiol and drospirenone). The biopsy of the lesions showed a spongiotic dermatitis. Minimal erythema dose was diminished when the patient was using EVRA^® and YAZ^® and became normal when they were withdrawn. Phototesting with UVA, photopatch testing and blood porphyrins were normal. Antinuclear antibodies were 1/80 initially and were 1/320 6 months later. Anti-deoxyribonucleic acid antibodies, extractable nuclear antigens, anti Ro and Anti La were negative and no systemic symptoms had developed. When all hormonal contraceptives were stopped, the patient became asymptomatic. We report a case of systemic photosensitivity induced by the contraceptive patch. To the best of our knowledge, no other cases induced by transdermal contraceptives have been reported previously.
