OBJECTIVE: This study retrospectively explored the late-life functional status of Okinawan centenarians. METHODS: Activities of daily living were measured retrospectively at five time points (10, 5, 3, and 1 year prior and present) for 22 centenarians in relation to seven physical, two sensory, and two cognitive functions using the Inoue Index. RESULTS: In all, 82% of individuals were still functioning independently at a mean age of 92 years and almost two-thirds were still functioning independently at a mean age of 97 years. CONCLUSION: Preliminary analyses suggest high functional status in Okinawan centenarians throughout their 90 s. The genetic and environmental factors contributing to this successful aging phenomenon deserve further investigation. 相似文献
A 75‐year‐old male was admitted to the gastroenterology unit of Nagoya City University Hospital due to epigastralgia after surgical treatment for right renal cancer. Endoscopy revealed advanced type 1 gastric cancer in the corpus of the stomach and multiple polypoid lesions in the stomach and duodenum. X‐ray examination of the small intestine using barium showed multiple polyps in the upper jejunum. Faint pigmentation on the palm was also detected. Peutz‐Jeghers syndrome (PJS) was diagnosed, despite a lack of family history. Total gastrectomy, resection of part of the upper jejunum and intraoperative endoscopic polypectomy of duodenal polyps was performed. This is the second reported case of PJS associated with renal cancer. We also detected a missense mutation in the tumor suppressor gene STK11 that, when mutated, is causative for PJS. 相似文献
Background: The effects of inhalational anesthetics on the microcirculation, including leukocyte dynamics, remain to be clarified. The authors investigated halothane and sevoflurane anesthesia to determine if these agents evoked leukocyte adhesion through endothelial cell-dependent mechanisms involving such adhesion molecules.
Methods: Rats were anesthetized with halothane or sevoflurane in 100% oxygen and the lungs were mechanically ventilated. Leukocyte behavior in mesenteric venules was recorded through intravital video microscopy under monitoring microvascular hemodynamics. To examine the mechanisms for leukocyte rolling and adhesion, these studies were repeated after animals were pretreated with a monoclonal antibody against P-selectin (MAb PB1.3) or against intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1; MAb 1A29): P-selectin required for rolling of circulating leukocytes and ICAM-1 for firm adhesive interactions with leukocyte integrins.
Results: Under baseline anesthetic conditions (1 minimum alveolar concentration [MAC]), venular wall shear rates, an index of the disperse force on marginating leukocytes, in the sevoflurane-treated rats were about two times higher than those with halothane. At 2 MAC, halothane caused a marked arteriolar constriction and decreasing shear rates concurrent with an increasing density of venular leukocyte adhesion. Sevoflurane at 2 MAC induced leukocyte rolling and adhesion, which were attenuated by PB1.3 and 1A29, without alterations in the wall shear rates. Halothane-induced leukocyte adhesion was not prevented by PB1.3 but it was by 1A29. 相似文献
This report concerns a notable case of progressive supranuclear palsy exhibiting asymmetric dentate nucleus and thalamic
degeneration with numerous torpedoes. The neuronal loss in the ventral lateral nucleus of the thalamus was predominant on
the right side, while in the cerebellum, a quantitative study revealed the contralateral predominance of the neuronal loss
in the dentate nuclei and torpedo formation, with preserved Purkinje cells. The abnormal tau-protein-related profiles in the
two nuclei did not show any laterality in their distribution, indicating that the dentatothalamic tract may have been affected
in a non-specific way in this case. In addition, the fact that the prominent sites of torpedo formation and loss of dentate
nucleus neurons are identical supports the hypothesis that the torpedoes may be formed in association with neuronal loss in
the dentate nucleus because of a plausible metabolic change in Purkinje cells through synaptic detachment of their axon terminals.

We used morphological, biochemical and immunohistochemical methods to assess the response of Müller cells after experimental
lensectomy-vitrectomy in rabbits. We observed widened intercellular spaces between the Müller cells and nerve fibers of ganglion
cells, and increased electron opacity in the Müller cells of eyes injected with silicone oil. No apparent morphological changes
were detected in the Müller cells of air-injected eyes. The specific and total activities of Müller cell-marker enzymes (glucose
6-phosphatase and glutamine synthetase) showed an initial increase, followed by a decrease. Glial fibrillary acidic protein
immunoreactivity was not found in the Müller cells of the normal rabbit retina but was exhibited after surgery. Our results
showed that markers of Müller cells associated with glycogenolysis and/or gluconeogenesis, glutamate-glutamine cycle and cytoskeletal
protein metabolism were affected by the experimental lensectomy-vitrectomy. 相似文献
We evaluated the applicability of the gold toning procedure to the immunogold silver staining method using monoclonal antibody against dopamine. Immunolabeling was examined in the rat substantia nigra at light and electron microscopic levels. Vibratome sections of fixed midbrains were incubated with anti-dopamine antiserum and then with 5 nm colloidal gold bound to goat anti-mouse immunoglobulin. Silver staining of these sections produced a light brown immunolabeling. After the sections were processed by gold toning, the labeling became intense black. At a light microscopic level, these high contrast signals were retained after the sections were osmicated and embedded in Epon. At an electron microscopic level, signal-to-noise ratio was high, and the positive staining could easily be verified at a low-power magnification. The technique described here, the gold-toned immunogold silver staining method, provides high contrast signals and is much more sensitive than immunogold silver staining alone. This method, therefore, has great potential for use in immunohistochemical analysis of the central nervous system. 相似文献
A 23-year-old male with bronchial asthma developed eosinophilia (eosinophils greater than 2,000/mm3) and was observed at our hospital. After using a prescribed indomethacin suppository for fever at home, he experienced an attack of acute chest pain and severe dyspnea. He suffered cardiac arrest while being transferred to the ward. After resuscitation, he was diagnosed as having acute myocardial infarction on the basis of electrocardiographic and ultrasonic cardiographic findings, and marked elevation of serum concentrations of myocardial enzymes. Thereafter, he often complained of precordial pain and abdominal pain. When he was administered an analgesic in another hospital, he developed severe precordial pain, and marked ST elevation was recorded on the electrocardiogram. Coronary angiography revealed no stenosis nor atherosclerotic changes, suggesting that severe spasm of the coronary arteries and direct myocardial injury by eosinophils were the causes of the myocardial infarction-like symptoms and angina pectoris-like attacks. He was diagnosed as having Churg-Strauss syndrome (allergic granulomatous angiitis) on the basis of the clinical findings; skin biopsy and transbronchial lung biopsy findings were consistent with the diagnosis. Following steroid administration, his angina-like attacks and abdominal pain ceased. This patient developed two episodes of acute cardiovascular symptoms upon administration of antipyretic analgesics. This suggests that in cases of Churg-Strauss syndrome with aspirin-induced asthma, physicians must be aware of the cardiovascular complications, and such drugs should be administered with caution. 相似文献
