Novel bio-magnetic membrane capsules (BMMCs) were prepared by a simple two-step titration-gel cross-linking method using a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA) matrix to control the disintegration of phytogenic magnetic nanoparticles (PMNPs) in an aqueous environment, and their performance was investigated for adsorbing cationic malachite green (MG) dye from water. The prepared BMMCs were characterized by FTIR, powder XRD, SEM, EDX, XPS, VSM and TGA techniques. The findings revealed that the hysteresis loops had an excellent superparamagnetic nature with saturation magnetization values of 11.02 emu g−1. The prepared BMMCs not only controlled the oxidation of PMNPs but also improved the adsorptive performance with respect to MG dye (500 mg g−1 at 298.15 K and pH 6.5) due to the presence of a large amount of hydrophilic functional groups (hydroxyl/–OH and carboxyl/–COOH) on/in the BMMCs. The smooth encapsulation of PMNPs into the PVA–SA matrix established additional hydrogen bonding among polymer molecular chains, with improved stability, and adsorptive performance was maintained over a wide range of pH values (3–12). Importantly, the prepared BMMCs were easily regenerated just by washing with water, and they could be re-utilized for up to four (4) consecutive treatment cycles without observing any apparent dissolution of iron/Fe0 or damage to the morphology. According to the mass balance approach, an estimated amount of 100 mL of treated effluent can be obtained from 160 mL of MG dye solution (25 mg L−1) just by employing a 0.02 g L−1 adsorbent dosage. Finally, a model of BMMCs based on zero-effluent discharge was also proposed for commercial or industrial applications. The prepared BMMCs are greatly needed for improving the water/wastewater treatment process and they can be utilized as an excellent adsorbent to remove cationic pollutants for various environmental applications.

ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of ethanolic extract of Lagenaria siceraria fruit (ELSF) on fat amassment and serum TNF– α in high-fat diet-induced obese rats.MethodsThe high fat diet induced obese rats were orally treated with orlistat (50 mg/kg) and ELSF (100, 200, 300 mg/kg/day) to the respective treatment groups. The body weight, fasting blood glucose level, lipid profile, serum levels of tumor necrosis factor– α (TNF–α) in rats were measured after 30 days of treatment and compared to the obese control animals.ResultsELSF significantly (P < 0.001) reduced the body weight gain, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein and TNF–α.ConclusionsThese encouraging findings suggest that Lagenaria siceraria has excellent pharmacological potential to prevent fat amassment.  相似文献

Although child and maternal malnutrition has been reduced in Bangladesh, the prevalence of underweight (weight-for-age z-score <-2) among children aged less than five years is still high (41%). Nearly one-third of women are undernourished with body mass index of <18.5 kg/m2. The prevalence of anaemia among young infants, adolescent girls, and pregnant women is still at unacceptable levels. Despite the successes in specific programmes, such as the Expanded Programme on Immunization and vitamin A supplementation, programmes for nutrition interventions are yet to be implemented at scale for reaching the entire population. Given the low annual rate of reduction in child undernutrition of 1.27 percentage points per year, it is unlikely that Bangladesh would be able to achieve the United Nations' Millennium Development Goal to address undernutrition. This warrants that the policy-makers and programme managers think urgently about the ways to accelerate the progress. The Government, development partners, non-government organizations, and the academia have to work in concert to improve the coverage of basic and effective nutrition interventions, including exclusive breastfeeding, appropriate complementary feeding, supplementation of micronutrients to children, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, management of severe acute malnutrition and deworming, and hygiene interventions, coupled with those that address more structural causes and indirectly improve nutrition. The entire health system needs to be revitalized to overcome the constraints that exist at the levels of policy, governance, and service-delivery, and also for the creation of demand for the services at the household level. In addition, management of nutrition in the aftermath of natural disasters and stabilization of prices of foods should also be prioritized.  相似文献

We present a patient with a right atrial mass, which was detected by transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography. The patient was asymptomatic on presentation. The mass was subsequently confirmed by gross and microscopic examination to be a papillary fibroelastoma. To the best of our knowledge this is only the fourth such report of this tumor in this location.  相似文献

In situ X-ray crystallography powder diffraction studies on beta silicon carbide (3C-SiC) in the temperature range 25–800 °C at the maximum peak (111) are reported. At 25 °C, it was found that the lattice parameter is 4.596 Å, and coefficient thermal expansion (CTE) is 2.4 ×106/°C. The coefficient of thermal expansion along a-direction was established to follow a second order polynomial relationship with temperature (α11=1.423×1012T2+4.973×109T+2.269×106). CASTEP codes were utilized to calculate the phonon frequency of 3C-SiC at various pressures using density function theory. Using the Gruneisen formalism, the computational coefficient of thermal expansion was found to be 2.2 ×106/°C. The novelty of this work lies in the adoption of two-step thermal expansion determination for 3C-SiC using both experimental and computational techniques.  相似文献

Immunotherapy deals with therapeutic interventions to arrest the progression of tumours using the immune system. These include checkpoint inhibitors, T-cell manipulation, cytokines, oncolytic viruses and tumour vaccines. In this paper, we present a survey of the latest developments on immunotherapy in colorectal cancer (CRC) and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in this context. Among these, microsatellite instability (MSI) is perhaps the most popular IO biomarker globally. We first discuss the MSI status of tumours, its implications for patient management, and its relationship to immune response. In recent years, several aspiring studies have used AI to predict the MSI status of patients from digital whole-slide images (WSIs) of routine diagnostic slides. We present a survey of AI literature on the prediction of MSI and tumour mutation burden from digitised WSIs of haematoxylin and eosin-stained diagnostic slides. We discuss AI approaches in detail and elaborate their contributions, limitations and key takeaways to drive future research. We further expand this survey to other IO-related biomarkers like immune cell infiltrates and alternate data modalities like immunohistochemistry and gene expression. Finally, we underline possible future directions in immunotherapy for CRC and promise of AI to accelerate this exploration for patient benefits.Subject terms: Colorectal cancer, Predictive markers  相似文献

From October, 1971, to October, 1979, 490 patients with 560 porcine bioprosthetic valves were discharged from the hospital. During these 8 years, 23 valves were removed because of failure due to spontaneous degeneration. Bioprosthetic valve survival without degeneration was at 4 years, 98.9% ± 0.6 (standard error); at 5 years, 96.4% ± 1.3; at 6 years, 90.8% ± 2.4; and at 7 years, 84.2% ± 3.7. There was no difference in degeneration observed with regard to sex, valve position, or whether the valves were rinsed with antibiotics prior to implantation. There was an increase in degeneration in patients 35 years old and younger compared with those more than 35 years old (p = 0.0001). Valve failure was gradual, and valve changes were noted by echocardiogram and phonocardiogram prior to actual failure. Specific factors leading to degeneration require further investigation.  相似文献
