Diagnostic Significance of Two Fetal Proteins, {alpha}f and r{beta}s, in Hepatoma and Other Neoplastic Diseases

Incidences of f and rßs components were studied inserum samples from patients with various malignant and non-malignantdiseases. With the micro-Ouchterlony method, af was detectedexclusively in cases of hepatocellular carcinoma of which theincidence was 83.5%, whereas the incidence of rßswas 47.7%. However, rßs was also detected in somemalignant disease other than hepatocellular carcinoma, withan incidence of 16.5%, and was also detected in a small numberof cases of non-neoplastic liver diseases. Though not tumor-specific, rßs as one of the fetalserum proteins can be detected in cases of non-f-producing hepatomaand in cases of malignancies other than hepatoma. Thus, thedetection of this protein may be of diagnostic significance.Possible mechanism of the appearance of this protein in theblood was discussed.     

Preliminary Phase II Study of Adriamycin (ADM) in Patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)

A phase II study of adriamycin (ADM) (60 mg/m² was performedin 22 patients with non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Therewere no responders in the 19 evaluable patients (16 with adenocarcinoma,two with squamous cell carcinoma and one with large cell carcinoma).The major side effects were alopecia (89%), leukocytopenia (73%),thrombocytopenia (58%) and upper gastrointestinal symptoms. Although ADM at 60 mg/m² did not appear to have sufficient antitumoractivity against NSCLC in this study, it is necessary to evaluatefurther the efficacy of ADM against NSCLC with another treatmentschedule.     

Cutaneous ultrastructural diagnosis of ceroid-lipofuscinosis

A skin biopsy from a 6-year-old girl was examined by electron microscopy and the diagnosis of ceroid-lipofuscinosis (CL) was confirmed. This has not been reported in the dermatology literature, because of the absence of specific skin manifestations. However, as we have shown, various cells of skin, including fibroblasts, Schwann cells, eccrine serous cells, endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells, accumulated characteristic substances to produce the finger print pattern (FPP) or the curvilinear profile (CLP) which are thought to be diagnostic for CL. Cutaneous ultrastructural research in such cases is important as asymptornatic skin disorders may exist in other congenital storage diseases.     

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis with antibodies to Cryptococcus neoformans

Clinical and immunological studies were made in forty-two patients diagnosed as suffering from hypersensitivity pneumonitis at Osaka Prefectural Habikino Hospital between 1973 and 1977. All the sera from forty-one patients tested had high litres of antibody against Cryptococcus neoformans in indirect fluorescent antibody tests, and twelve also had precipitins against Cryptococcus neoformans polysaccharide. Only about 10% of control sera from patients with otherlung diseases had low titresof antibody against Cryptococcus neoformans. Antibody against Cryptococcus neoformans was also found frequently in the sera of asymptomatic members of the families of the patients. A possible relationship of Cryptococcus neoformans to hypersensitivity pneumonitis is suggested.
