Sociospatial ties and postdisaster reconstruction: An analysis of the assemblage in the mega‐fire of Valparaíso

Disasters affect sociospatial links in a dynamic and unstable meshwork of aspects that are reconfigured. In this sense, accounting for this complexity is central to analyze the transformation of the sociospatial linkage of the affected people and communities. Addressing from community environmental psychology, we propose the concept of assemblage to guide a situated reading of subjective, material, and community aspects present in a reconstruction process after a disaster. Following a qualitative methodology, using spatially referenced narrative interviews (n = 16) and thematic analysis, it is described how these links are presented in a community that lived the mega‐fire of a part of the city of Valparaíso in Chile. The results describe that the experience of being a community is a variable flow within a process defined by an ever‐emerging configuration of spatial, technological, personal, social, and sensory characteristics. We conclude by pointing out the qualities of the communities when considered from an assemblage perspective.

Psychological and relational factors in ESRD hemodialysis treatment in an underserved community

ObjectiveThe researchers investigated the association of depression with treatment adherence, and examined the possible moderating roles of social support and of the physician-patient working alliance (PPWA) on treatment adherence, satisfaction with treatment, and quality of life.MethodsThe current study sampled ninety-five patients with End Stage Renal Disease who were receiving outpatient hemodialysis (HD) treatment.ResultsFindings indicated that higher levels of depression were significantly associated with lower ratings of adherence, quality of life, and social support. In contrast, higher levels of social support and of the PPWA were significantly associated with higher ratings of adherence, satisfaction with treatment, and quality of life. Analyses of moderation showed no effect for PPWA between depression and adherence, satisfaction, or quality of life; however, there was a significant moderation effect for social support.ConclusionThere are mild but significant associations between PPWA and social support. Positive associations between the PPWA and social support on adherence, satisfaction, and quality of life indicate that each one, PPWA and social support, plays its own role on patients’ experiences of and behavior in treatment. Affective social support significantly limits the negative influence of depression on adherence.Practice ImplicationsAssessment of depression and social support is essential in hemodialysis treatment.     

Distal Medial Collateral Ligament Grade III Injuries in Collegiate Football Players: Operative Management,Rehabilitation, and Return to Play

ContextManagement of isolated grade III medial collateral ligament injuries is controversial, as both nonoperative and operative management can result in return to play. However, operative management is recommended in elite athletes who have a grade III injury with distal avulsion.ObjectiveWe present a standardized rehabilitation protocol in a case series of 7 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I American football athletes who sustained grade III distal medial collateral ligament tears that were repaired operatively, with emphasis on return to play.ResultsMedian time to surgery was 4 days (range = 2–67 days). Median time from surgery to noncontact drills was 120.5 days (range = 104–168 days), and median time from surgery to full-contact sport was 181 days (range = 139–204 days). All athletes returned to play at their preinjury level of competition.ConclusionsOur study highlighted how operative management with a standardized rehabilitation protocol can be applied to Division I football players and result in safe return to play.
