Measuring social participation: reliability of the LIFE-H in older adults with disabilities

Purpose: Much more attention should be paid to instruments documenting social participation as this area is increasingly considered a pivotal outcome of a successful rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to document the reliability of a participation measure, the Assessment of Life Habits (LIFE-H), in older adults with functional limitations.

Methods: Eighty-four individuals with physical disabilities living in three different environments were assessed twice with the LIFE-H, an instrument that documents the quality of social participation by assessing a person's performance in daily activities and social roles (life habits).

Results: The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) computed for intrarater reliability exceeded 0.75 for seven out of the 10 life habits categories. For interrater reliability, the total score and daily activities subscore are highly reliable (ICC ??0.89), and the social roles subscore is moderately reliable (ICC?=?0.64). ‘Personal care’ is the category with the highest ICC, and for five other categories ICCs are moderate to high (<?0.60).

Conclusion: LIFE-H is a valuable addition to instruments that mostly emphasize the concepts of function or functional independence. It is particularly meaningful to evaluate the participation of older adults in significant social role domains such as recreation and community life. It may be considered among the instruments having the best fit with the ICF definition of participation (the person's involvement in a life situation) and a majority of its related domains.     

Use of information communication technology and stress,burnout, and mental health in older,middle-aged,and younger workers – results from a systematic review

The aim of this systematic review is to summarise quantitative studies in occupational settings observing the association between Information communication technology (ICT) and stress, and burnout, considering age as an effect modifier. A systematic review using PRISMA guidelines was conducted through the following bibliographic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Psycinfo, and the Cochrane Library. Inclusion criteria were occupational settings and content relevant to our research question. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale. Two interventional, 4 cohorts, and 29 cross-sectional studies were found. ICT use in occupational settings was associated with stress seen in cross-sectional studies, but not in interventional studies. There was a concordant association with ICT and burnout in different study designs. Overall, there were no linear trends between age and technostress. We suggest that the observed associations were mostly present in the middle-aged working population and that these associations need to be supported in further studies.     

Long QT Syndrome in Pregnancy: Are Vaginal Delivery and Use of Oxytocin Permitted? A Case Report

BackgroundPatients with congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) are at increased risk of ventricular arrhythmia, particularly during labour and the puerperium.CaseA 28-year-old primigravida with known LQTS underwent induction of labour at 41 weeks’ gestation using a Foley catheter balloon and IV oxytocin. Vaginal delivery with passive second stage and outlet forceps was undertaken with early epidural analgesia to prevent tachycardia and psychological stress. The patient gave birth to a healthy female, and had an uncomplicated postpartum period under continuous electrocardiogram monitoring.ConclusionVaginal delivery with use of oxytocin for the induction of labour can be safely undertaken in patients with LQTS.     

Liver tumours in children: diagnostic and therapeutic approach in the Tropics

Liver tumours in children are rare and their prognosis are poor. Through a cross and retrospective study, we examined the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects on a number of patients in our hospital to try and improve the management of cases. This study involved 66 children admitted to the pediatric oncology unit of University Hospital of Treichville in Abidjan between 1991 and 2007. The average age of children was 7.2 years and the sex ratio of 1.4. 42 children lived in the countryside and 52 children were from disadvantaged areas. 63.2% of children were not vaccinated against hepatitis B. The abdominal mass was the primary sign of discovery and these tumours were dominated in both their primitive and secondary forms by the Burkitt's lymphoma.
