Brilliant animal colors often are produced from light interacting with intricate nano-morphologies present in biological materials such as butterfly wing scales. Surveys across widely divergent butterfly species have identified multiple mechanisms of structural color production; however, little is known about how these colors evolved. Here, we examine how closely related species and populations of Bicyclus butterflies have evolved violet structural color from brown-pigmented ancestors with UV structural color. We used artificial selection on a laboratory model butterfly, B. anynana, to evolve violet scales from UV brown scales and compared the mechanism of violet color production with that of two other Bicyclus species, Bicyclus sambulos and Bicyclus medontias, which have evolved violet/blue scales independently via natural selection. The UV reflectance peak of B. anynana brown scales shifted to violet over six generations of artificial selection (i.e., in less than 1 y) as the result of an increase in the thickness of the lower lamina in ground scales. Similar scale structures and the same mechanism for producing violet/blue structural colors were found in the other Bicyclus species. This work shows that populations harbor large amounts of standing genetic variation that can lead to rapid evolution of scales’ structural color via slight modifications to the scales’ physical dimensions.Organisms produce colors in two basic ways: by synthesizing pigments that selectively absorb light of certain spectral bands so that only light outside the absorption bands is backscattered (chemical color) or by developing nanomorphologies that enhance the reflection of light of certain wavelengths by interference (physical color or structural color). Structural colors play major roles in natural and sexual selection in many species (1) and have a broad range of applications in color display, paint, cosmetics, and textile industries (2). Structural color surveys across widely divergent species have revealed a large diversity of color-producing mechanisms (3–9). However, there has been a lack of systematic study and comparison of how different colors from closely related species or within populations of a single species evolve, even though these colors can vary dramatically. By examining how these species/populations evolve different colors, it is possible to identify the minimal amount of morphological change that results in significant color variation. Furthermore, this research may serve as an inspiration for future application of similar evolutionary principles to the design of photonic devices for color tuning, light trapping, or beam steering (2, 10–20). From an evolutionary biology point of view, we are curious to examine how structural colors respond to selection pressure and whether there is sufficient standing genetic variation in natural populations to allow the rapid evolution of novel colors. Here we focus on determining the morphological changes and the physical mechanisms that cause the evolution of violet structural color in populations of a single species and also across different species within a single genus of butterflies. We focus on the genus Bicyclus (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae), composed of more than 80 species that predominantly exhibit brown color along with marginal eyespots. Some Bicyclus species, however, have independently evolved transverse bands of bright violet/blue structural color on the dorsal surface of the forewings (black asterisks in Fig. 1A) (21, 22). One species, Bicyclus anynana, has become a model species amenable to laboratory rearing, and multiple aspects of its marginal eyespots (size, relative width of the color rings, shape) have been altered by artificial selection (23–27). However, change of color (hue), either pigmentary or structural, via artificial selection has not been reported. B. anynana does not exhibit bright violet coloration on its wings and therefore provides an excellent opportunity for investigating whether there is genetic potential to produce violet color upon directed selection. We investigated this potential by performing an artificial selection experiment in B. anynana that targeted the color of the specific dorsal wing region that evolved violet/blue coloration in other members of the genus (Fig. 1 B–G).Open in a separate windowFig. 1.Structural color in Bicyclus butterflies and basic wing scale morphology. The black asterisks mark two clades that evolved violet/blue color independently, represented here by B. sambulos and B. medontias. (H) 3D illustration of the wing and scales in the selected wing area of B. anynana. (I) Magnified view of the ripped region in H showing how cover (c; brown) and ground (g; green) scales are attached to the wing membrane (m, pink) and alternate along rows. Scales on the other (ventral) side of the wing membrane are visible also. (J) Cross-sectional view of a single scale showing the trabeculae (T) connecting the lower lamina (LL) to the upper lamina that includes ridges (R), microribs (Mr), and crossribs (Cr). Windows (W) are the spaces between the ridges and crossribs. Cover and ground scales have the same basic morphology. [llustrations in H–J courtesy of Katerina Evangelou (Central Saint Martin’s College, London).]B. anynana, like other butterflies, has two types of scales, cover and ground, which alternate within a row with cover scales partially covering the ground scales and the point where both scales attach to the wing membrane (Fig. 1 H and I and Fig. S1) (28). Both cover and ground scales contain a lower lamina with a continuous smooth surface below a region composed of longitudinal ridges and crossribs, collectively referred to as the “upper lamina” and connected to the lower lamina via pillars called “trabeculae” (Fig. 1J and Fig. S1) (6). Previous studies on butterflies showed that structural color can be produced by interference with light reflected from the overlapping lamella that build the longitudinal ridges, from microribs protruding from the sides of the longitudinal ridges, or from the lower lamina, which can vary in thickness and patterning (Fig. 1J) (29, 30). However, it is not clear how the violet/blue color is produced in members of the two Bicyclus clades that separately evolved this color, whether B. anynana can be made to evolve the same violet/blue color via artificial selection, and whether it will generate the color in the same way as the other species. To answer these questions, we conducted detailed optical characterization and structural analysis of butterfly wing scales from three separate species and artificially evolved populations of Bicyclus to illustrate how color is generated and how it has evolved. 相似文献

Care for patients who experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) has rapidly evolved in the past decade. Increased sophistication of care in the community, emergency medical services (EMS) and hospital setting is associated with improved patient-centred outcomes. Notably, Utstein survival doubled from 11.6% to 23.1% between 2011 and 2016. These achievements involved collaboration between policymakers, clinicians and researchers, and were made possible by a strategic interplay of policy, research and implementation. We review the development and current state of OHCA in Singapore using primary population-based data from the Pan-Asian Resuscitation Outcomes Study and an unstructured search of research databases. We discuss the roles of important milestones in policy, community, dispatch, EMS and hospital interventions. Finally, we relate these interventions to relevant processes and outcomes, such as the relationship between the strategic implementation of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and placement of automated external defibrillator with return of spontaneous circulation, survival to discharge and survival with favourable neurological outcomes. 相似文献

INTRODUCTIONChest radiographs (CXRs) are widely used for the screening and management of COVID-19. This article describes the radiographic features of COVID-19 based on an initial national cohort of patients.METHODSThis is a retrospective review of swab-positive patients with COVID-19 who were admitted to four different hospitals in Singapore between 22 January and 9 March 2020. Initial and follow-up CXRs were reviewed by three experienced radiologists to identify the predominant pattern and distribution of lung parenchymal abnormalities.RESULTSIn total, 347 CXRs of 96 patients were reviewed. Initial CXRs were abnormal in 41 (42.7%) out of 96 patients. The mean time from onset of symptoms to CXR abnormality was 5.3 ± 4.7 days. The predominant pattern of lung abnormality was ground-glass opacity on initial CXRs (51.2%) and consolidation on follow-up CXRs (51.0%). Multifocal bilateral abnormalities in mixed central and peripheral distribution were observed in 63.4% and 59.2% of abnormal initial and follow-up CXRs, respectively. The lower zones were involved in 90.2% of initial CXRs and 93.9% of follow-up CXRs.CONCLUSIONIn a cohort of swab-positive patients, including those identified from contact tracing, we found a lower incidence of CXR abnormalities than was previously reported. The most common pattern was ground-glass opacity or consolidation, but mixed central and peripheral involvement was more common than peripheral involvement alone. 相似文献

Graphene oxide-modified rubberized engineered cementitious composite (GO-RECC) is attracting the attention of researchers because of the reported benefits of the GO and crumb rubber (CR) on the strength and deformation properties of the composite. While it is well established that GO negatively affects the workability of cementitious composites, its influence on the attainment of the desired self-compacting (SC) properties of ECC has not yet been thoroughly investigated, especially when combined with crumb rubber (CR). In addition, to simplify the number of trial mixes involved in designing SC-GO-RECC, there is a need to develop and optimize the process using Design of Experiment (DOE) methods. Hence, this research aims to investigate and model using response surface methodology (RSM), the combined effects of the GO and CR on the SC properties of ECC through the determination of T500, slump flow, V-funnel, and L-box ratio of the SC-GORECC as the responses, following the European Federation of National Associations Representing for Concrete (EFNARC) 2005 specifications. The input factors considered were the GO by wt.% of cement (0.02, 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08) and CR as a replacement of fine aggregate by volume (5, 10, and 15%). The results showed that increasing the percentages of GO and CR affected the fresh properties of the SC-GORECC adversely. However, all mixes have T500 of 2.4 to 5.2 s, slump flow of 645 to 800 mm, V-funnel time of 7.1 to 12.3 s, and L-box ratio (H2/H1) of 0.8 to 0.98, which are all within acceptable limits specified by EFNARC 2005. The developed response prediction models were well fitted with R2 values ranging from 91 to 99%. Through the optimization process, optimal values of GO and CR were found to be 0.067% and 6.8%, respectively, at a desirability value of 1.0. 相似文献

The torrefaction process in the preparation of energy materials has garnered a lot of attention and has been investigated as a means of improving biomass solid fuels. The aim of this study is to study the effect of the temperature and holding time of two biomass samples: wild Napier grass and oil palm petiole. The torrefied samples are operated in a pyrolysis reactor to replicate the torrefaction procedure. The temperature parameter ranges between 220 and 300 °C while the holding time of the reaction parameter ranges from 10 to 50 min. It is found that with increasing temperature and time, the moisture content and number of O and H atoms decrease and also cause both mass and energy yield to decrease. It is found that the calorific value and the energy density increase with both parameters, which shows that optimization is needed for better solid fuel production. Between the two parameters, temperature changes have more significant effects on the torrefied samples. The optimized temperature and time are found to be 260 °C and 30 min, respectively. The usage of the pyrolysis reactor for the torrefaction reaction has been proven to serve as a good option due to similar product characteristics and equivalent results. 相似文献

Present guidelines recommend a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach to diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) care, but relevant data from Asia are lacking. We aim to evaluate the clinical and economic outcomes of an MDT approach in a lower extremity amputation prevention programme (LEAPP) for DFU care in an Asian population. We performed a case‐control study of 84 patients with DFU between January 2017 and October 2017 (retrospective control) vs 117 patients with DFU between December 2017 and July 2018 (prospective LEAPP cohort). Comparing the clinical outcomes between the retrospective cohort and the LEAPP cohort, there was a significant decrease in mean time from referral to index clinic visit (38.6 vs 9.5 days, P < .001), increase in outpatient podiatry follow‐up (33% vs 76%, P < .001), decrease in 1‐year minor amputation rate (14% vs 3%, P = .007), and decrease in 1‐year major amputation rate (9% vs 3%, P = .05). Simulation of cost avoidance demonstrated an annualised cost avoidance of USD $1.86m (SGD $2.5m) for patients within the LEAPP cohort. In conclusion, similar to the data from Western societies, an MDT approach in an Asian population, via a LEAPP for patients with DFU, demonstrated a significant reduction in minor and major amputation rates, with annualised cost avoidance of USD $1.86m. 相似文献

Renal vein thrombosis can occur as a complication of nephrotic syndrome. We present the case of a young man with nephrotic syndrome caused by minimal change disease who developed acute inferior vena cava and left renal vein thrombosis. He was treated initially with intravenous heparin. Because of the persistence of severe left flank pain and gross hematuria, local infusion of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator was tried, with resolution of thrombi and subsidence of symptoms. Functional preservation of the involved kidney is good, as indicated by Tc-99m DMSA scan (involved kidney, 47.4%; uninvolved kidney, 52.6%). Anticoagulation is usually recommended as the treatment of choice in renal vein thrombosis. We believe that in cases with critical presentations, such as bilateral involvement, extension into inferior vena cava, acute renal failure, pulmonary embolism or severe flank pain, thrombolytic therapy should be considered as a second-line treatment if good response is not obtained with heparin. 相似文献

Postoperative biliary and vascular complications contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality in liver transplantation.
Interventional radiologists are an integral part of the multidisciplinary team necessary for optimizing the management of
these complications. During a 15-year period, 39 cadaveric and 25 living related liver transplantations were performed at
the Chang Gung Memorial hospital, Taiwan. Of 64 liver transplant recipients, 9 (3 adult and 6 pediatric) underwent 13 interventional
radiological procedures for the treatment of biliary sludge-casts (n = 2), bile duct occlusion or stenosis (n = 2), hepatic veins thrombosis (n = 1), hepatic veins stenosis (n = 1), portal vein stenosis with splenorenal shunting (n = 1), biloma (n = 1), and infected fluid collection or ascites (n = 4). Antegrade or retrograde interventional approach was used to successfully treat all biliary complications, and all percutaneous
drainage procedures were effective in the control of intra-abdominal fluid collections. Portal vein stenosis was treated by
balloon dilatation, and the associated splenorenal shunt was closed by metallic coil embolization via transhepatic catheterization
of the portal vein. Hepatic vein stenosis was effectively treated by balloon dilatation and expandable metallic stent deployment
via transfemoral and jugular venous approaches, respectively. Hepatic vein thrombosis was only partially lysed by transvenous
streptokinase administration, and surgical thrombectomy was needed to achieve complete recanalization. The total success rate
of the interventional procedures was 92 % with no procedure-related complications. The overall survival rate in this series
is 89 %, and all patients who underwent living related liver transplantation maintain to date a 100 % survival rate. We can
conclude that interventional radiological procedures are very useful for managing biliary and vascular complications after
liver transplantation. These techniques provide a cure in most situations, thus obviating the need for further surgical intervention
or re-transplantation.
