PaO2 levels and retrolental fibroplasia: a report of the cooperative study

The relation between PaO2 and retrolental fibroplasia (RLF) was studied prospectively in 719 premature infants born in or treated in the intensive care units of a group of university hospitals. Blood gas studies were performed on 589 of these infants, 66 of whom had a diagnosis of RLF; in 27 of these 66, some grade of mostly nonblinding cicatricial disease developed. The frequency of RLF was highest among infants of lowest birth weight. A multivariate statistical method was used to analyze simultaneously the effect of possible etiologic factors associated with RLF. The occurrence of RLF was found to be unrelated to PaO2, as determined by the limited information available from intermittent sampling. RLF is associated with concentration of oxygen administered in the lightest birth weight group, but the strongest association, aside from birth weight, was with time in oxygen. None of the other variables involving blood chemical values appeared to be associated with RLF. The severity of cicatricial RLF is clearly greater in infants weighing less than 1,200 g at birth. Conservative administration of oxygen may have been responsible for failure to demonstrate quantitative association between PaO2 levels and disease. Agreement between the observed and predicted numbers of infants with RLF demonstrate the strength of the multivariate technique employed in making the statistical analyses.     

Interobserver variation in the interpretation of abdominal radiographs

A total of 140 sets of abdominal radiographs were reviewed independently by four qualified diagnostic radiologists. The degree of interobserver agreement was determined by calculating kappa values for 19 commonly used radiographic signs and diagnoses. There was fair to excellent interobserver agreement for 11 signs and diagnoses and poor agreement for the remaining eight. The signs and diagnoses for which agreement is poor cannot be considered reliable and include particularly large bowel obstruction and nonspecific gas pattern.     

Selenium content of foods purchased or produced in Ohio

Approximately 450 samples of about 100 types of foods consumed by rural and urban Ohioans were analyzed for selenium. Meat, dairy products, eggs, and grain products produced in Ohio have considerably lower selenium content than corresponding products produced in high selenium areas, such as South Dakota. Retail Ohio foods with interregional distribution tended to be higher in selenium content than corresponding foods produced in Ohio. Best sources of selenium in Ohio foods commonly consumed were meat and pasta products. Poor sources of selenium were fruits, most vegetables, candies, sweeteners, and alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages. Establishment of an accurate data base for selenium depends on knowledge of the interregional distribution of foods, the selenium content of foods at their production site, and the selenium content of foods with wide local distribution.

Synthesis and biodistribution of R- and S-isomers of [F]-fluoropropranolol, a lipophilic ligand for the β-adrenergic receptor

The S and R isomers of [¹⁸F]-fluoropropranolol (1-[1-fluoro-2-isopropylamino]-3-naphthalen-1-yloxy-propan-2-ol) have been prepared by reductive alkylation of the appropriate aminoalcohols. The radiosynthesis provides a reasonable yield (25%) to give products of 99% enantiomeric excess and specific activities of 1–3 Ci/μmol. The dissociation constants for the β₂ adrenergic receptor are 0.5 and 2.5 nM for the S and the R isomers, respectively. The biodistribution data in rats show that uptake and egress of the tracer is rapid but that the result of blocking studies and the difference between the R and the S isomers suggest receptor-mediated uptake in receptor-rich tissue.
