In this study, compacted hematite (Fe2O3) preforms were made and sintered at various temperatures, such as 1250 °C and 1300 °C, using both conventional and microwave sintering methods. The density, porosity, microhardness, cold crushing strength, microphotographs, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the sintered preforms were used to evaluate the performance of the two sintering methods. It was found that microwave sintered preforms possessed lesser porosity and higher density than conventionally sintered preforms owing to uniform heating of the powdered ore in microwave sintering method. Furthermore, it was also observed that microwave sintered preforms exhibited relatively higher cold crushing strength and hardness than conventionally sintered preforms. Thus, the overall results revealed that microwave sintering yielded better properties considered in the present study.  相似文献

Boron nitride (BN) nanomaterials are rapidly being investigated for potential applications in biomedical sciences due to their exceptional physico-chemical characteristics. However, their safe use demands a thorough understanding of their possible environmental and toxicological effects. The cytotoxicity of boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) was explored to see if they could be used in living cell imaging. It was observed that the cytotoxicity of BNNTs is higher in cancer cells (65 and 80%) than in normal cell lines (40 and 60%) for 24 h and 48 h respectively. The influence of multiple experimental parameters such as pH, time, amount of catalyst, and initial dye concentration on percentage degradation efficiency was also examined for both catalyst and dye. The degradation effectiveness decreases (92 to 25%) as the original concentration of dye increases (5–50 ppm) due to a decrease in the availability of adsorption sites. Similarly, the degradation efficiency improves up to 90% as the concentration of catalyst increases (0.01–0.05 g) due to an increase in the adsorption sites. The influence of pH was also investigated, the highest degradation efficiency for MO dye was observed at pH 4. Our results show that lower concentrations of BNNTs can be employed in biomedical applications. Dye degradation properties of BNNTs suggest that it can be a potential candidate as a wastewater and air treatment material.

The foremost challenge in countering infectious diseases is the shortage of effective therapeutics. The emergence of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak has posed a great menace to the public health system globally, prompting unprecedented endeavors to contain the virus. Many countries have organized research programs for therapeutics and management development. However, the longstanding process has forced authorities to implement widespread infrastructures for detailed prognostic and diagnostics study of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS CoV-2). This review discussed nearly all the globally developed diagnostic methodologies reported for SARS CoV-2 detection. We have highlighted in detail the approaches for evaluating COVID-19 biomarkers along with the most employed nucleic acid- and protein-based detection methodologies and the causes of their severe downfall and rejection. As the variable variants of SARS CoV-2 came into the picture, we captured the breadth of newly integrated digital sensing prototypes comprised of plasmonic and field-effect transistor-based sensors along with commercially available food and drug administration (FDA) approved detection kits. However, more efforts are required to exploit the available resources to manufacture cheap and robust diagnostic methodologies. Likewise, the visualization and characterization tools along with the current challenges associated with waste-water surveillance, food security, contact tracing, and their role during this intense period of the pandemic have also been discussed. We expect that the integrated data will be supportive and aid in the evaluation of sensing technologies not only in current but also future pandemics.

Objectives

To assess the effectiveness of corticosteroids in the prophylaxis of postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass grafting or valvular heart surgery in terms of reducing its incidence and decreasing the length of hospital stay.

Methods

This prospective double blinded randomized study was conducted at Queen Alia Heart Institute (Amman, Jordan) from June 2014 to June 2015 on 340 patients who underwent their first on-pump elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) alone or combined with valvular surgery. Inclusion criteria consisted of elective first time CABG or combined with valvular surgery, use of β-adrenergic blockade, and normal sinus rhythm. Exclusion criteria included a history of heart block, previous episodes of AF or flutter, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, history of peptic ulcer disease, systemic bacterial or mycotic infection, permanent pacemaker, and any documented or suspected supraventricular or ventricular arrhythmias. Patients were randomized into two equal groups (n = 170 each), then each group was subdivided into patients who underwent CABG alone (n = 120), and patients underwent valvular heart surgery with or without CABG (n = 50). In the treatment group, patients were given 1 g of methylprednisolone before cardiopulmonary bypass then 100 mg of hydrocortisone every 8 hours for the first 3 days postoperatively. The primary endpoint was the overall occurrence of postoperative AF.

Results

AF developed in 21.1% (36 patients) in the treatment group in contrast to 38.2% (65 patients) in the control group (p < 0.05). In the subdivided groups (CABG only), approximately 20% (24 patients) developed AF in the treatment group in contrast to 35% (42 patients) in the control group (p < 0.05). In the other group, (CABG + VALVE) 24% (12 patients) developed AF compared with 46% (23 patients) in the control group (p < 0.05). The length of hospital stay was 6.02 ± 11.23 days in the treatment group while it was 5.98 ± 1.86 days in the control group, which was found to be statistically nonsignificant. No statistical significant difference in the rate of postoperative complications including mediastinitis as well superficial wound infections was observed between the two groups.

Conclusion

Prophylactic short-term use of steroids both intraoperatively and postoperatively proved to be safe and effective in reducing the incidence of postoperative AF in patients undergoing CABG alone or combined with valve surgery.  相似文献

Aim of the study

The study was aimed to investigate the chemical composition and pharmacological basis for traditional use of essential oil of Nepeta cataria L. (Limiaceae) (Nc.Oil) in gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders.

Materials and methods

Chemical analysis was carried out through GC-EIMS, 13C NMR and Kovats Retention Indices while pharmacological study was carried out in isolated tissues preparations.

Results

Four major components; 1,8-cineol (21.00%), α-humulene (14.44%), α-pinene (10.43%) and geranyl acetate (8.21%) were identified among the 27 compounds in Nc.Oil. In isolated rabbit jejunum, Nc.Oil, papaverine and verapamil inhibited spontaneous and high K+(80 mM) precontractions, as well as shifted the Ca++ concentration–response curves (CRCs) to right, indicating calcium channel blocking activity. In isolated guinea-pig trachea, Nc.Oil and papaverine inhibited carbachol (1 μM) and K+ precontractions with similar potency, while verapamil was more potent against K+. Nc.Oil also potentiated isoprenaline inhibitory CRCs, similar to papaverine, indicating papaverine-like PDE inhibitor activity. In isolated guinea-pig atria, Nc.Oil caused cardiodepression at around 25–80 times higher concentrations, similar to papaverine.

Conclusions

These data indicate that Nepeta cataria possesses spasmolytic and myorelaxant activities mediated possibly through dual inhibition of calcium channels and PDE, which may explain its traditional use in colic, diarrhea, cough and asthma.  相似文献

OBJECT: Clotrimazole, an antimycotic drug, inhibits proliferation of normal and cancer cells by downregulating the movement of intracellular Ca++ and K+. The authors examined the effect of clotrimazole on the growth and sensitivity to cisplatin of two human glioblastoma cell lines--A172, which has the wild-type p53 gene, and T98G, which has the mutant p53 gene in vitro. METHODS: The A172 and T98G glioblastoma cells were exposed to clotrimazole and cell growth was assessed using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium chloride colorimetric assay. Clotrimazole produced a dose-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation and caused changes in cellular structure toward a well-differentiated form. The growth inhibitory effect of clotrimazole was reversible. Western immunoblot analysis revealed a marked increase in cellular glial fibrillary acidic protein and wild-type p53 and a decrease in c-myc and c-fos oncoproteins in both cell lines treated with clotrimazole. Flow cytometric analysis revealed that clotrimazole-treated cells accumulated in the G0/G1 phase with a marked decrease in cells in the S phase; when clotrimazole was washed out from the culture medium, cells again started to proliferate, with a marked decrease in cells in the G0/G1 phase and an increase in cells in the S phase. The growth inhibitory effect of clotrimazole could not be overcome by exogenous stimulation with either epidermal growth factor or c-myc peptide. A combined treatment with clotrimazole and cisplatin significantly enhanced cell cytotoxicity compared with treatment using either drug alone. A DNA fragmentation assay showed that both clotrimazole and cisplatin induced apoptosis, which was increased in cells treated by both drugs. CONCLUSIONS: The present study indicates that clotrimazole inhibits cell proliferation accompanied by morphological changes toward differentiation of glioblastoma cells and that this drug synergistically enhances the antitumor effect of cisplatin by inducing wild-type p53-mediated apoptosis.  相似文献

New approaches for the management of glioblastoma (GBM) are an urgent and unmet clinical need. Here, we illustrate that the efficacy of radiotherapy for GBM is strikingly potentiated by concomitant therapy with the arginine-depleting agent ADI-PEG20 in a non-arginine-auxotrophic cellular background (argininosuccinate synthetase 1 positive). Moreover, this combination led to durable and complete radiological and pathological response, with extended disease-free survival in an orthotopic immune-competent model of GBM, with no significant toxicity. ADI-PEG20 not only enhanced the cellular sensitivity of argininosuccinate synthetase 1–positive GBM to ionizing radiation by elevated production of nitric oxide (˙NO) and hence generation of cytotoxic peroxynitrites, but also promoted glioma-associated macrophage/microglial infiltration into tumors and turned their classical antiinflammatory (protumor) phenotype into a proinflammatory (antitumor) phenotype. Our results provide an effective, well-tolerated, and simple strategy to improve GBM treatment that merits consideration for early evaluation in clinical trials.  相似文献

Abstract – This experiment assessed the efficacy of the enamel matrix derivative (EMD) to regenerate cementum in vital and endodontically treated teeth with osseous dehiscence defects. Five adult female beagle dogs were used. Thirty maxillary teeth (bilateral maxillary canines and second and fourth premolars) were randomly divided into two experimental groups (groups A and B, containing 12 teeth each) and one control group (group C). Endodontic treatment was only performed on teeth in group A compared with teeth in groups B and C. Buccal osseous dehiscence defects were surgically created in teeth from all groups. Teeth in the experimental group were treated with the EMD, whereas the controls were not. After 5 months, the animals were sacrificed and block sections of the teeth in experimental and control groups were processed for histological analysis. Newly regenerated cementum was observed in all teeth in groups A and B. No cementum regeneration was observed in group C. There was a significant difference in cementum generation between the experimental and control groups (P < 0.001). EMD therapy induces cementogenesis in vital and endodontically treated teeth with osseous dehiscence defects.  相似文献

Background: A worrying correlation which seems to be overlooked by clinicians is allergic reactions to titanium (Ti) in patients with dental implants. Purpose: The aim of the present review study was to assess whether or not Ti sensitivity is associated with allergic reactions in patients with dental implants. Materials and Methods: To address the focused question “Can Ti cause allergic reactions in patients with dental implants?”, databases were explored from 1977 until May 2010 using a combination of the following keywords: “allergy,”“dental,”“hypersensitivity,”“implant,”“oral,” and “Titanium.” Letters to the editor and unpublished data were excluded. Results: Seven studies (six clinical and one experimental) were included. The participants were aged between 14.3 and 84.1 years. In five clinical studies, Ti implants were inserted in the mandible. Five studies reported dermal inflammatory conditions and gingival hyperplasia as allergic reactions in patients with Ti dental implants. A case report presented swelling in submental and labial sulcus and hyperemia of soft tissues in a patient with Ti dental implants. Two studies reported that Ti implants are well tolerated in host tissues. The patch test was performed in two clinical studies for the diagnosis of allergic reactions. Memory lymphocyte immunostimulation assay and lymphocyte transformation tests were also performed. Conclusion: The significance of Ti as a cause of allergic reactions in patients with dental implants remains unproven.  相似文献
