Aim of the study

Caesalpinia bonduc (Lin.) Roxb. is a known drug in Ayurveda to treat various diseases specifically tumors, cysts and cystic fibrosis (CF). The aim of this study was to assess in vitro as well as in vivo antimicrobial activity of Caesalpinia bonduc seeds.

Materials and methods

The in vitro antimicrobial activities of seed coat and seed kernel extracts were investigated by microbroth dilution assay. In vivo activities of hydro-alcoholic extracts were investigated in rat models of chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia mimicking that in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Results

Various extracts of plant seeds exhibited in vitro antimicrobial activities in a range of 22–350 μg/ml. The extracts also showed activity against methicillin resistant (MR) Staphylococcus aureus and ampicillin resistant (AR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa as in the sensitive strains. In rat model of chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia, hydro-alcoholic extracts of Caesalpinia bonduc seed kernel (CBSK) and Caesalpinia bonduc seed coat (CBSC) were injected subcutaneously in the test groups of animals. The control groups were treated with cortisone and saline. Two weeks after challenge with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the CBSK treated animals showed a significant bacterial clearance from the lungs (P < 0.04) and less severe incidence of lung abscess (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Results showed that Caesalpinia bonduc may have the potential to be promising natural medicine, with other forms of treatments, for CF patients with chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infections.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate the herb–drug interaction of Andrographis paniculata Nees (Acanthaceae) and Andrographolide (AN) with nabumetone (NAB) in wistar rats. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions were studied after co‐administration of APE and AN with NAB in Wistar rats. In pharmacokinetic studies, significant decrease in Cmax, AUC0–t and AUC0–∞ of 6‐MNA after co‐administration with pure AN and APE has been observed. Tmax of 6‐MNA has been increased to 2 h from 1.5 h in AN + NAB treated group. Changes in mean residential time, clearance and volume of distribution of 6‐MNA in APE + NAB treated group and AN + NAB treated group indicated interference of other components of APE other than AN. In pharmacodynamic study, significant decrease in antiarthritic activity of NAB on concomitant administration with APE and AN has been observed. The study concludes that NAB exhibits pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interactions with APE and AN in rats thus alarms the concomitant use of herbal preparations containing APE and AN with NAB. Further study is needed to understand the mechanism and predict the herb–drug interaction in humans. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms are uncommon but rising in incidence. There have been recent changes in the WHO nomenclature and a newly proposed American Joint Committee on Cancer TNM staging, which complement each other. These neoplasms are of great medical and radiological interest because of their diverse presenting features and imaging appearances. There is an increased role for both anatomic and functional imaging in the assessment of these neoplasms. A review of the nomenclature, staging, and imaging is presented in this paper.  相似文献

Hepatocellular carcinomas are highly vascular tumors, showing progressive hypervascularity by the process of neoangiogenesis. Tumor angiogenesis is critical for tumor growth as well as metastatic spread therefore, imaging and quantification of tumor neo-angiogenesis is essential for monitoring response to targeted therapies and predicting disease progression. Sorafenib is a molecular targeting agent used for treating hypervascular tumors. This drug is now the standard of care in treatment of patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. Due to its anti-angiogenic and anti-proliferative actions, imaging findings following treatment with Sorafenib are quite distinct when compared to conventional chemotherapeutic agents. Liver MRI is a widely adopted imaging modality for assessing treatment response in hepatocellular carcinoma and imaging features may reflect pathophysiological changes within the tumor. In this mini-review, we will discuss MRI findings after Sorafenib treatment in hepatocellular carcinoma and review the feasibility of MRI as an early biomarker in differentiating responders from non-responders after treatment with molecular targeting agents.  相似文献

The new series of asymmetrical pyrazole curcumin analogues 4a – g were synthesized by using polyethylene glycol (PEG-400) as a green reaction medium and evaluated for their in vivo analgesic and in vitro antioxidant (H2O2, DPPH, Ferrous reducing power and Nitric oxide scavenging activity) and anti-inflammatory activities. All the compounds synthesized 4a – g showed the potential to demonstrate analgesic activity as compared to the standard ibuprofen. Among the tested series, compounds 4e and 4b exhibited good hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity as compared to the standard butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT). Compounds 4b , 4d , 4f , and 4g showed good DPPH free radical scavenging activity. Compounds 4b , 4c , 4d , 4e and 4g showed excellent ferrous-reducing power activity, whereas all the compounds showed better nitric oxide scavenging activity than standard ascorbic acid. Additionally, all the synthesized compounds were also screened for their in vitro anti-inflammatory activity. Compounds 4b , 4d , 4f and 4g showed good anti-inflammatory activity as compared to standard diclofenac sodium.  相似文献

Background:

Posterior tibial slope (PTS) is an important factor affecting postoperative range of motion (ROM) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Metaphysio-diaphyseal angle (MDA) is a new entity defined as angle between proximal anatomical axis and metaphyseal axis of tibia. This study was undertaken to determine PTS in Indian patients and find its correlation with MDA of tibia. Accuracy of extramedullary jigs and the influence of MDA on the accuracy was also evaluated. This study is a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data in a tertiary healthcare center.

Materials and Methods:

Data of 100 consecutive patients undergoing TKA in a single center by a single surgeon was analyzed. Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) substituting TKA was done with same jig to achieve different PTS in different patients. MDA, preoperative PTS and postoperative PTS were calculated. The data was analyzed using appropriate statistical analysis.

Results:

Mean preoperative PTS was 11.64° and mean MDA was 23.76° with a strong correlation between them (Pearson''s coefficient 0.72). Extramedullary jigs were accurate in 53% cases. In remaining 47%, postoperative PTS was less than planned PTS in 30%, and more in 17%. Mean postoperative PTS was 2.54°. In patients with MDA < 20°, postoperative PTS was significantly less (P = 0.0176) compared with those with MDA > 20°.

Conclusions:

The study establishes the positive correlation between MDA and PTS in Indians; and that MDA is an independent factor affecting accuracy of extramedullary jigs in TKA.  相似文献

Primary carcinoma of the vagina is rare, accounting for 1–3% of all gynaecological malignancies. MRI has an increasing role in diagnosis, staging, treatment and assessment of complications in gynaecologic malignancy. In this review, we illustrate the utility of MRI in patients with primary vaginal cancer and highlight key aspects of staging, treatment, recurrence and complications.The incidence of primary vaginal cancer increases with age, with approximately 50% of patients presenting at age greater than 70 years and 20% greater than 80 years.1 Around 2890 patients are currently diagnosed with vaginal carcinoma in the USA each year, and almost 30% die of the disease.2 The precursor for vaginal cancer, vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VAIN) and invasive vaginal cancer is strongly associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection (93%).3,4 In situ and invasive vaginal cancer share many of the same risk factors as cervical cancer, such as tobacco use, younger age at coitarche, HPV and multiple sexual partners.57 In fact, higher rates of vaginal cancer are observed in patients with a previous diagnosis of cervical cancer or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.7,8As is true for other gynaecologic malignancies, vaginal cancer diagnosis and staging rely primarily on clinical evaluation by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).9 Pelvic examination continues to be the most important tool for evaluating local extent of disease, but this method alone is limited in its ability to detect lymphadenopathy and the extent of tumour infiltration. Hence, FIGO encourages the use of imaging. Fluorine-18 fludeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET), a standard imaging tool for staging and follow-up in cervical cancer, can also be used for vaginal tumours, with improved sensitivity for nodal involvement compared to CT alone.10 In addition to staging for nodal and distant disease, CT [simulation with three dimensional (3D) conformations] is particularly useful for treatment planning and delivery of external beam radiation. MRI, with its excellent soft tissue resolution, is commonly used in gynaecologic malignancies and has been shown to be accurate in diagnosis, local staging and spread of disease in vaginal cancer.11,12 While no formal studies are available for vaginal cancer, in cervical cancer MRI actually alters the stage in almost 30% of patients.1315Treatment planning in primary vaginal cancer is complex and requires a detailed understanding of the extent of disease. Because vaginal cancer is rare, treatment plans remain less well defined, often individualized and extrapolated from institutional experience and outcomes in cervical cancer.1,1619 There is an increasing trend towards organ preservation and treatment strategies based on combined external beam radiation and brachytherapy, often with concurrent chemotherapy,14,20,21 surgery being reserved for those with in situ or very early-stage disease.22 Increasing utilization of MR may provide superior delineation of tumour volume, both for initial staging and follow-up, to allow for better treatment planning.23  相似文献

Background/Aims

The purpose of this article is to describe and illustrate anatomic findings after the Whipple procedure, and the appearance of its complications, on imaging.

Conclusion

Knowledge of the cross-sectional anatomy following the Whipple procedure, and clinical findings for associated complications, are essential to rapidly and accurately diagnose such complications on postoperative studies in order to optimize treatment.  相似文献
