Effect of Bendazac Lysine on lens and retina in diabetics

The possible beneficial effects on the lens and retina which Bendazac Lysine may have in the treatment of adult diabetic patients were investigated. Twenty patients, ranging in age from 54.80 ± 5.86 years old, were studied. The average duration of the diabetes was 11.32 ± 4.10 years. Thirteen patients had background retinopathy. The metabolic controls carried out during the study were satisfactory (HbA1<11%). Bendazac Lysine (500 mg three times a day) was administered for 6 months. Blood-retinal barrier permeability (VPR and VPRt) and lens transmittance (t) were evaluated prior to and 6 months after treatment by fluorophotometry. No statistically significant differences between the pre- and post-treatment values of the retina permeability were observed, however, there was a statistically significant improvement (p<0.05) (initial value: t= 0.813 ± 0.040 and final value: t=0.823 ± 0.037) in the lens transmittance. The authors conclude that Bendazac Lysine has a beneficial effect on the lens in the diabetic adult although no improvement in the permeability of the blood-retinal barrier has been observed.

The dermatologist's procedure was introduced in 1972 by employers' liability insurance funds in the industrial, agricultural and public sectors of Germany's statutory occupational accident insurance as a "procedure for early detection of occupational skin diseases". So far, it is still the most relevant tool for secondary prevention in occupational dermatology in Germany. According to the intention of this procedure, insured persons with a skin disease in which an occupational aetiology is suspected must be offered preventive measures and, if necessary, given appropriate treatment to avoid their losing their jobs. On the initiative of the Central Federation of Industrial Professional Associations (HVBG), a study group was set up in 1999 from among its membership in cooperation with the Working Committee of Occupational and Environmental Dermatology (ABD) and the Professional Organisation of German Dermatologists (BVDD) to improve on the efficiency of the "classic" dermatologist's procedure. The proposed "optimised" dermatologist's procedure is based on the assumption that early detection followed by competent and intensified skin protection and skin care will be successful in retarding or stopping the progression of occupational dermatoses, while later treatment is likely to be less effective. In October 2002, a pilot study started in Northwest Germany to establish by scientific evaluation whether the implementation of secondary protective measures is definitively better when the provisional "optimised" dermatologist's procedure is followed. The study results should allow detailed suggestions for an improved dermatologist's procedure before it is introduced nationwide.     

Care of the female rape victim

Rape is indexed as the second-most-frequent violent crime, yet it also is considered the crime that is least reported. Rape is a serious offense against the person, assaulting both body and psyche, and victims may suffer short- or long-term impairment as well. As primary care providers, nurse practitioners are in a position to identify rape victims and begin interventions to alleviate suffering, provide supportive care and plan for follow-up in order to prevent devastating effects on the individual's life. The purpose of this article is to better acquaint nurse practitioners with the scope of rape and rape issues, and the impact rape has on adult female victims and their families. The article discusses the definition of rape; rape myths; prevalence and reporting; responses of practitioners, victims and families; and primary care interventions in the areas of counseling, physical assessment and treatment, and police/legal considerations.     

Comparison of individual follow-up and computerized record linkage using the Canadian Mortality Data Base

We compared two methods of ascertaining mortality in a historical prospective mortality study. Computerized Record Linkage (CRL) with the centralized historical Canadian Mortality Data Base (CMDB) was carried out on 2469 men and an attempt was also made to trace the subjects by individual follow-up (IFU). All but 88 were traced and 60 were reported to be dead. CRL was able to locate the deaths of three men who had been untraced by IFU. Contradictory information on vital status was obtained on 5 subjects--in 4 of them, the discrepancy was resolved in favour of CRL. Overall, CRL using the CMDB performed very well. We also consider factors that affect the relative costs of the two methods, which should be balanced against the accuracy of information obtained.     

Tumorigenicity study in Syrian hamsters fed areca nut together with nitrite

In order to evaluate the effect of concurrent administrationof areca nut and sodium nitrite, a long-term feeding study wasconducted with 120 Syrian hamsters. The animals were dividedinto four treatment groups, each consisting of 15 males and15 females, and received 2 g/kg diet of sodium nitrite (groupI), 20 g/kg diet of powdered areca nut (group II), 2 g/kg dietof sodium nitrite plus 20 g/kg diet of areca nut (group III)or powdered diet only (group IV) throughout their lifetime.Urine samples from all groups were analysed for N-nitrosonipecoticacid (NNIP), a major urinary metabolite of areca-nut-derivednitrosamines. NNIP was only detected in the urine of hamstersfed nitrite plus areca nut (concentration: 1.9±0.9 ng/mlurine), indicating that areca nut alkaloids underwent in vivonitrosation to form arecanut-specific nitrosamines. The totaltumour response was not significantly elevated in groups IIand III. Hamsters of group III had a markedly, but also insignificantlyhigher frequency of malignant tumours than those of the othergroups, with a statistically significant increase in malignantlymphomas in the males. Although limited by the low number ofanimals per group, these results indicate that exposure to nitritetogether with areca nut constituents appears to enhance therisk of developing malignancies.     

Vav3 modulates B cell receptor responses by regulating phosphoinositide 3-kinase activation.

To elucidate the mechanism(s) by which Vav3, a new member of the Vav family proteins, participates in B cell antigen receptor (BCR) signaling, we have generated a B cell line deficient in Vav3. Here we report that Vav3 influences phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) function through Rac1 in that phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-trisphosphate (PIP3) generation was attenuated by loss of Vav3 or by expression of a dominant negative form of Rac1. The functional interaction between PI3K and Rac1 was also demonstrated by increased PI3K activity in the presence of GTP-bound Rac1. In addition, we show that defects of calcium mobilization and c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) activation in Vav3-deficient cells are relieved by deletion of a PIP3 hydrolyzing enzyme, SH2 domain-containing inositol polyphosphate 5'-phosphatase (SHIP). Hence, our results suggest a role for Vav3 in regulating the B cell responses by promoting the sustained production of PIP3 and thereby calcium flux.     

Object-selective responses in the human motion area MT/MST.

The perception of moving objects and our successful interaction with them entail that the visual system integrates shape and motion information about objects. However, neuroimaging studies have implicated different human brain regions in the analysis of visual motion (medial temporal cortex; MT/MST) and shape (lateral occipital complex; LOC), consistent with traditional approaches in visual processing that attribute shape and motion processing to anatomically and functionally separable neural mechanisms. Here we demonstrate object-selective fMRI responses (higher responses for intact than for scrambled images of objects) in MT/MST, and especially in a ventral subregion of MT/MST, suggesting that human brain regions involved mainly in the processing of visual motion are also engaged in the analysis of object shape.
