Antidermatophytic activity of extracts from Psoralea corylifolia (Fabaceae) correlated with the presence of a flavonoid compound

Extracts obtained from seeds of Psoralea corylifolia showed several degrees of antifungal activity against Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum and Microsporum gypseum by the disc diffusion method on a Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) medium. Methanol extract of the seeds at 250 microg exhibited the maximum inhibition with a halo of 28 mm diameter. Six different bands were obtained when the methanol extract was subjected to TLC. 13C NMR and Mass spectra revealed that the active compound would be a flavonoid, 4'-methoxy flavone. MIC of the active compound along with standard miconazole was carried out using tube dilution technique.     

Gamma Interferon Receptor Defect Presenting as Recurrent Tuberculosis

Failure of response to therapy in childhood tuberculosis may be due to resistance, paradoxical response or immunodeficiency. Interferon-γ (IFNγ) plays a major role during host defense against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). An 8-y-old boy presented with fever, hepatosplenomegaly and parotid abscess. He had been earlier treated for BCG adenitis in infancy and at 5 y for TB osteomyelitis of iliac bone and recovered. Investigations confirmed disseminated Mycobacterium Avium Intracellulare infection. He was investigated for immunodeficiency because of recurrent mycobacterial disease and a partial defect of γ-interferon receptor was identified. He required a 2 y course of therapy with a 7 drug regimen and recovered. The authors report this case because of its rarity and to highlight the need to consider γ-interferon receptor defect in the presence of recurrent tuberculosis (TB) and also review the options for therapy.     

Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel benzimidazol/benzoxazolylethoxypiperidone oximes

Some novel benzimidazol/benzoxazolylethoxypiperidone oximes were synthesized and their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (NCIM-2492), Bacillus subtilis (NCIM-2439), Escherichia coli (NCIM-2345) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (NCIM-2035) and antifungal activity against Candida albicans (NCIM-C27), Candida-6 (NCIM-C27), Candida-51 (NCIM-C27), Aspergillus niger (NCIM-590) and Aspergillus flavus (NCIM-539) have been evaluated. Compounds 26 and 27 exerted potent in vitro antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus while compounds 26, 29 and 30 exhibited potent in vitro antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Candida-51, and Aspergillus niger.     

Synthesis and study of antibacterial and antifungal activities of novel 8-methyl-7,9-diaryl-1,2,4,8-tetraazaspiro[4.5]decan-3-thiones

Some novel spiropiperidinyl-1,2,4-triazolidin-3-thiones have been synthesized and studied for their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Candida-6, Candida-51, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus. Compounds 30-32 exhibited potent in vitro antibacterial activity against E. coli and P. aeruginosa whereas the same set of compounds exerted potent in vitro antifungal activity against Candida-6, A. niger and A. flavus.
