Following the oral administration of acetone extract of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) seeds for 15 days is male rats, total protein concentration was found to be significantly decreased in testes and vas deferens and increased in seminal vesicles and prostate gland. There was a decrease in activities of acid and alkaline phosphatase in all these regions, except that alkaline phosphatase was unchanged in vasa. In female rats, oral administration of the extract for 10 days led to vaginal cornification and oestrus cycle. While moderate doses caused increase in weight of mammary glands, higher doses increased the weight of oviduct, endometrium, myometrium, cervix and vagina also. The results confirm the oestrogenic activity of the seed extract.  相似文献

In Utero Ethanol Exposure Elicits Oxidative Stress in the Rat Fetus   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Prior studies in our laboratory have shown that exposure of cultured fetal rat hepatocytes to ethanol (E) blocks epidermal growth factor-dependent replication and that this is paralleled by cell membrane damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, membrane lipid peroxidation (LP), and enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species. These measures of E-mediated oxidative stress (OS) were mitigated by treatment with antioxidants, and cell replication could be normalized by maintaining cell glutathione (GSH) pools. We have now extended these studies to an in vivo model. Rats were administered E (4 g/kg, po) at 12-hr intervals on days 17 and 18 of gestation and killed on day 19,1 hr following a final dose of E (a total of 5 doses). Fetal and maternal brain and liver were assayed for signs of OS. The 2-day in utero E exposure increased membrane LP in fetal brain as evidenced by increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels from 1.76 ± 0.12 se (nMol/mg protein) to 2.00 ± 0.08 (p < 0.05) and conjugated dienes from 0.230 ± 0.006 se (OD233/mg lipid) to 0.282 ± 0.006 (p < 0.05). In fetal liver, MDA levels increased from 2.39 ± 0.08 se (nMol/mg protein) to 2.87 ± 0.08 (p < 0.05), whereas dienes differed significantly only between ad libitum controls and the E and pair-fed control groups (p < 0.05). E decreased GSH levels in fetal brain by 19%, from 19.88 ± 0.72 to 16.13 ± 1.06 (nMol/mg protein) (p < 0.05). A10% decrease in GSH was seen in fetal liver (p < 0.05). GSH in maternal brain was decreased by 44% from 47.29 ± 3.38 to 26.60 ± 2.29 (p < 0.05). Other E-related increases in these OS measures were not observed in maternal organs. E did not decrease α-tocopherol levels in fetal and maternal brain or in fetal liver (p < 0.05), whereas maternal liver α-tocopherol content was reduced by 31% (p < 0.05) by E treatment. It is concluded that maternal E consumption can induce an OS in fetal tissues that may contribute to the fetotoxic effects of E.  相似文献

Clinical epidemiology of bancroftian filariasis: effect of age and gender   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
A cross-sectional survey was used to determine the prevalence of disease (n = 6493) and microfilaraemia (n = 24,946) due to Wuchereria bancrofti in Pondicherry, south India. The total disease attributable to filariasis was significantly higher in males (13.67%) than females (2.26%), due to the occurrence of hydrocele in males. While the prevalence of chronic signs was clearly age-dependent in both sexes, that of acute signs was independent of age. Thus the age and gender structure of the survey sample will crucially influence apparent prevalence. Examination of the gender differences in the point prevalence of disease in 12 areas of India showed a significant relationship between occurrence of disease and gender, but this relationship did not significantly differ between northern and southern Indian populations. The study suggested that the failure to appreciate the importance of age and gender in disease prevalence has led to misconception about disease patterns in India.  相似文献

Arboviral transmission through transplanted organs is rare. We report a highly probable case of dengue viral transmission during live donor liver transplantation. Fever with severe thrombocytopenia was observed in the donor and recipient within 6 and 9 days after transplantation, respectively. Dengue diagnosis was confirmed by testing blood and explant tissue from the donor and recipient using dengue‐specific NAT (nucleic acid testing) and serology. Serology indicated the donor had secondary dengue infection that ran a mild course. However, the dengue illness in the recipient was severe and deteriorated rapidly, eventually proving fatal. The recipient's explant liver tissue tested negative for viral RNA indicative of a pretransplant naïve status. The prM–Envelope gene sequence analysis of the donor and recipient viral RNA identified a similar serotype (DENV1) with almost 100% sequence identity in the envelope region. Molecular phylogenetic analysis of donor and recipient viral envelope sequences with regional and local dengue strains further confirmed their molecular similarity, suggesting a probable donor‐to‐recipient transmission via organ transplantation. Screening of living donors for dengue virus may be considered in endemic regions.  相似文献

Free radicals are highly reactive species that have been implicated in the pathogenesis of many diseases. Reactive oxygen species can initiate lipid peroxidation and DNA damage leading to mutagenesis, carcinogenesis and cell death, if the antioxidant system is impaired. This study was undertaken to examine the prevalence of oxidative stress and the role of antioxidant defence in untreated leukemia patients. The generation of superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide by leukocytes, plasma malondialdehyde levels, red cell copper zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu-Zn SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) activities were determined in 30 patients with different types of leukemias prior to therapy. The superoxide anion generation by polymorphonuclear leukocytes was found to be significantly increased in leukemia patients especially those with acute lymphocytic and nonlymphocytic leukemias, while the hydrogen peroxide levels were comparable to the control values. Plasma lipid peroxidation products in untreated leukemia patients were in the normal range. Red cell Cu-Zn SOD and GSH-PX activities were significantly increased and showed no correlation with the hemoglobin content. Although superoxide generation was high, lipid peroxide levels were normal in these patients. This might be due to the increased activities of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GSH-PX) which counteract lipid peroxidation. Increased free radical generation, especially superoxide anion in leukemia patients and increased antioxidant defence enzymes, which is an adaptive protective response, are indicative of mild oxidative stress. There were no significant differences for the parameters cited above between different types of leukemias, suggesting that the changes are not specific to the type of leukemia.  相似文献

The antibacterial activity of Jasmine (Jasminum sambac L.) flower hydro steam distilled essential oil, synthetic blends and six major individual components was assessed against Escherichia coli (MTCC-443) strain. The activity was bactericidal. Minimum inhibitory concentration was determined by tube dilution technique, and the Minimum inhibitory concentration ranged between 1.9-31.25 μl/ml. Phenolcoefficient of the oil, synthetic blends and components varied between 0.6-1.7. The activity of the chemicals was possibly due to the inhibition of cell membrane synthesis.  相似文献

The reconstruction of large soft tissue defects of the upper extremity is a challenging problem. Although free tissue transfer in a single stage is preferred, the recipient blood vessels usually determine the outcome.
