Prune Belly syndrome is characterized by a combination of megacystis, anterior abdominal wall distension with deficiency of the abdominal wall musculature, and bilateral cryptorchidism. Diagnosis is easy after 15 weeks of gestation, but may be difficult at the end of the first term. Authors report 2 cases of Prune Belly syndrome diagnosed at 11 and 14 weeks of gestation respectively. After literature review, diagnosis and prognosis particularities of this syndrome are discussed.  相似文献

Objective

To identify the unusual breeding sites of two dengue vectors, i.e. Aedes albopictus (Ae. albopictus) and Aedes aegypti (Ae. aegypti).

Methods

During the second half of 2010, we performed an occasional survey in rural (Teluk Tempoyak) and urban (Gelugor) areas of Penang Island, Malaysia, to identify cryptic breeding sites.

Results

In the rural area, we found heterogeneous immature stages of Ae. albopictus in the water bowl of an encaged bird. We also observed Ae. aegypti eggs deposited in the flush tank of a toilet in the urban area.

Conclusions

It can be concluded that both breeding patterns can increase contact with hosts (humans and birds) and presumably population densities of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti, thereby potentially boosting the risks for spread and transmission of arboviral diseases.  相似文献

Accumulation of amyloid peptide (Aβ) in senile plaques is a hallmark lesion of Alzheimer disease (AD). The design of molecules able to target the amyloid pathology in tissue is receiving increasing attention, both for diagnostic and for therapeutic purposes. Curcumin is a fluorescent molecule with high affinity for the Aβ peptide but its low solubility limits its clinical use. Curcumin-conjugated nanoliposomes, with curcumin exposed at the surface, were designed. They appeared to be monodisperse and stable. They were non-toxic in vitro, down-regulated the secretion of amyloid peptide and partially prevented Aβ-induced toxicity. They strongly labeled Aβ deposits in post-mortem brain tissue of AD patients and APPxPS1 mice. Injection in the hippocampus and in the neocortex of these mice showed that curcumin-conjugated nanoliposomes were able to specifically stain the Aβ deposits in vivo. Curcumin-conjugated nanoliposomes could find application in the diagnosis and targeted drug delivery in AD.From the Clinical EditorIn this preclinical study, curcumin-conjugated nanoliposomes were investigated as possible diagnostics and targeted drug delivery system in Alzheimer’s disease, demonstrating strong labeling of Aβ deposits both in human tissue and in mice, and in vitro downregulation of amyloid peptide secretion and prevention of Aβ-induced toxicity.  相似文献

This paper, which is presented in two parts, is intended to demonstrate that practices related to the area of human resources management, adopted by model organisations that have dominated their markets consistently, can lend themselves very well to the healthcare sector, which is primarily a "people-oriented" sector. As change in a modern business context is set to continue in an unrelenting way, most organisations will be presented with the challenge of developing the necessary skills and areas of expertise to enable them to cope with the demands on them, master technological opportunities at their disposal, learn how to exploit modern management concepts and optimise value to all the stakeholders they intend to serve. This paper draws from best practices using the experiences of quality recognised organisations and many admired names through pioneering human resource policies and practices and through clear demonstrations on the benefits of relying on people as the major "asset". Part I of this article addresses the importance of human resources as revealed through models of management for organisational excellence. In particular, the paper refers to the criteria for excellence in relation to people management using the following prestigious and integrative management models: Deming Prize (Japan); European Quality Award Model (Europe); and Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (USA). In addition, this paper illustrates several case studies using organisations known for their pioneering approaches to people management and which led them to win very prestigious quality awards and various international accolades. The paper concludes by reinforcing the point that human resource management in a healthcare context has to be viewed as an integrated set of processes and practices which need to be adhered to from an integrated perspective in order to optimise individuals' performance levels and so that the human potential can be exploited fully.  相似文献

Recent data have revealed that soluble oligomeric amyloid-beta peptide (Abeta) may be the proximate effectors of neuronal injuries and death in Alzheimer's disease (AD) by unknown mechanisms. Consistently, we recently demonstrated the critical role of a redox-sensitive cytosolic calcium-dependent phospholipase A2 (cPLA2)-arachidonic acid (AA) pathway in Abeta oligomer-induced cell death. According to the involvement of oxidative stress and polyunsaturated fatty acids like AA in the regulation of sphingomyelinase (SMase) activity, the present study underlines the role of SMases in soluble Abeta-induced apoptosis. Soluble Abeta oligomers induced the activation of both neutral and acidic SMases, as demonstrated by the direct measurement of their enzymatic activities, by the inhibitory effects of both specific neutral and acidic SMase inhibitors, and by gene knockdown using antisense oligonucleotides. Furthermore, soluble Abeta-mediated activation of SMases and subsequent cell death were found to be inhibited by antioxidant molecules and a cPLA2-specific inhibitor or antisense oligonucleotide. We also demonstrate that sphingosine-1-phosphate is a potent neuroprotective factor against soluble Abeta oligomer-induced cell death and apoptosis by inhibiting soluble Abeta-induced activation of acidic sphingomyelinase. These results suggest that Abeta oligomers induce neuronal death by activating neutral and acidic SMases in a redox-sensitive cPLA2-AA pathway.  相似文献

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a collection of fetal congenital malformations affecting mainly the limbs, but also the craniofacial area. The pathogenic mechanism is still unclear. The facial malformations in ABS are multiple, polymorphous, and asymmetric. The type and extent of facial defects depend on band location and time of onset. Defects may include a combination of facial cleft, cleft palate and lip, ocular lesions, and cranial malformations. The management of this disease must be multidisciplinary and the outcome depends on the gravity of malformations.  相似文献
