ObjectiveTo investigate the calcium and phosphorus contents of four domestic animals used as sources of meat in Nigeria.MethodsThe calcium contents of the body parts of the animals were determined using atomic absorption spectrometer. Their phosphorus contents were determined colorimetrically using the molybdenum blue method.ResultsThe calcium and phosphorus contents were significantly higher in the bone samples than in the other animal parts investigated (P<0.05). The calcium contents of all the edible parts were higher in chicken than in the other animals. High calcium and phosphorus contents were detected in the faeces of chicken and goat, and that of cattle and goat, respectively. Low calcium and phosphorus contents were detected in the urine samples. Calcium: phosphorus ratios calculated for the bones of chicken, cattle and goat were satisfactory.ConclusionsIn conclusion, calcium and phosphorus contents of the animal parts vary significantly and their relative contents may be related to the animal's diet. Chicken parts may be the preferred dietary source of these minerals. This study highlights the need for routine investigation of the mineral contents of food, which is necessary for proper nutritional guidelines.  相似文献

The practice of allowing family to be present during patient resuscitation or invasive procedures (Family Presence) is gaining acceptance in North America and the United Kingdom in controlled circumstances. Research into Family Presence has demonstrated multiple benefits for the patient, family and health care team. These advantages include helping the family to understand the severity of the illness/trauma and to see that appropriate attempts were undertaken to save their loved one. Family Presence can also facilitate improved communication between the health care team and family. In spite of evidence supporting Family Presence as a useful practice for patient, family and health care team, the use of Family Presence is uncommon within Australian emergency departments and hospitals. Clear expectations at organisational, governmental and professional levels are essential to effectively implement this approach. To be supported in the clinical area, the success of a Family Presence program requires an inclusive approach to program development. A critical component of a successful Family Presence program is a family facilitator who is adequately prepared for the role and committed to supporting the family during resuscitation or invasive procedures. Research exploring Family Presence in Australia is lacking and highlights the need for context specific research in this area.  相似文献

Various novel recombinant human tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF) mutants were prepared using protein engineering techniques, and their cytotoxic activity was compared with that of the intact form of TNF (intact TNF). Mutant 471 (a TNF mutant molecule with the deletion of 7 amino acids at the amino-terminal and the substitution of Pro8Ser9Asp10 by ArgLysArg) had a 6-fold higher cytotoxic activity against murine L929 cells. The mutant TNF had an increased ability to bind to TNF receptor on murine L929 fibroblasts cells. A cross-linking study revealed that mutant 471 had an increased ability to form an active trimer. Mutant 471 also showed higher cytotoxic activity against human KYM myosarcoma cells and human MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic carcinoma cells. The possible cachectin activity of the mutant was almost the same as that of intact TNF. These results suggest that mutant 471 might be a more promising candidate as an anticancer agent than intact TNF.  相似文献

Microglia are the major target of HIV-1 infection in the brain. Microglial infection is CD4-dependent, but the role of chemokine receptors CCR5 and CCR3 and their natural ligands in modulating HIV-1 infection in microglia has been questioned. In primary human fetal microglial cultures, we demonstrate that HIV-1 infection of these cells is dependent on CCR5, since an antibody to CCR5 completely blocked productive infection. Anti-CCR3, in contrast, had a smaller inhibitory effect which was not statistically significant. The chemokine ligands for CCR5, RANTES and MIP-1beta, also potently inhibited HIV-1 infection in microglia, but the third ligand MIP-1alpha failed to show inhibition. Interestingly, when microglial cultures were treated with antibodies specific to each of these chemokines, HIV-1 infection was enhanced by anti-RANTES and anti-MIP-1beta, but not by anti-MIP-1alpha. These results demonstrate the presence of endogenous chemokines that act as endogenous inhibitors of HIV-1 infection in microglia. Additionally, IFNbeta, a known anti-viral cytokine, also provided potent inhibition of viral infection as well as induction of all three chemokines in microglia. These results suggest the possibility that type I interferon can down-modulate microglial HIV-1 infection in vivo by multiple mechanisms.  相似文献

We report a case of a 22-year-old female who presented with a solid tumor in the frontal lobe having no continuity with the wall of the lateral ventricle. The tumor was excised. The patient has been free from clinical symptoms and tumor recurrence for over nine years. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of extremely large ependymal true rosettes, resembling medulloepithelioma, and thick fibrous septa, which were surrounded by thick reactive gliosis. There were no histological signs of malignancy. In our case, the tumor is assumed to be a variant of gliofibroma for which we propose the term "desmoplastic ependymoma".  相似文献

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic responses evoked by electrical stimulation in the neostriatal slice preparation were studied in neurons injected intracellularly with Na-conductance blocker QX-314. Local stimulation elicited depolarizing postsynaptic potentials (DPSPs) in the QX-314-injected neurons when the membrane potential was morenegative than −60 mV. When DPSPs were minimized by depolirizing current injection in the QX-314-injected neuron, hyperpolarization was clearly observed following local stimulation. The maximum duration of the hyperpolarizing response to strong local stimulation was about 130 ms. The hyperpolarizing response was blocked by the addition of bicuculine or picrotoxin to the Ringer solution. Intracellular Cl- injections produced changes in the pattern of the local stimulations-induced responses; the initial depolarizing response was followed by a relatively large amplitude long duration depolarization. The polarity of the long duration of depolarizing response could not be reversed by depolarizing currents which were normally sufficient to reverse the polarity of DPSPs in the neurons without Cl- injection. The application of pentobarbital enhanced the amplitude and the duration of the hyperpolarizing responses. The revealed potential of the pentobarbital-enhanced response was estimated to be −60 mV. On the basis of their reversal potential, sensitivity to injected Cl-, sensitivity to GABA blockers picrotoxin and bicuculine, and the effect of pentobarbital, these hyperpolarizing responses are shown to be GABAergic Cl- mediated inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs).  相似文献

The effects of clomiphene citrate (CC) on ovulation and ovum maturation were studied using the isolated perfused rabbit ovary. CC (10(-5) M) added to the perfusate with human chorionic gonadotropin (50 IU) did not affect ovulatory efficiency, ovulation time, oocyte maturation, or degeneration of ovulated ova and follicular oocytes. During perfusion without human chorionic gonadotropin, the percentage of follicular oocytes with germinal vesicle breakdown was significantly increased in response to CC (10(-5) M or 10(-7) M); a greater percentage of follicular oocytes was degenerated. Estradiol (100 ng/ml) added to the perfusate reversed the effect of CC on degeneration of follicular oocytes. Of follicular oocytes from ovaries perfused with CC, 79.3% were degenerated; in contrast, 25% were degenerated in ovaries treated with CC plus estradiol. These data suggest that CC has a direct ovarian effect and that ovum degeneration associated with CC may be related to an antiestrogenic action.  相似文献

The patient was a 54-year-old woman with extremely advanced gastric cancer of type 3. A CT scan of the abdomen showed enlargement of many huge abdominal para-aortic lymph nodes. Combined chemotherapy of TS-1 and CDDP was planned in order to reduce the tumor. TS-1 (100 mg/body/day) was administered for 21 days followed by 14 days rest as one course. CDDP (96 mg/body) was administered 8 days after the start of TS-1. After 2 courses of treatment, a CT scan showed complete disappearance of lymph node metastasis, and no high grade toxicities. Therefore, one month after the completion of the chemotherapy, total gastrectomy and D2 lymph node dissection were performed. The histological effect was judged to be grade 1a-1b. There were no viable cancer cells in any lymph nodes. One year after surgery, the patient is still alive without recurrence. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy with TS-1 and CDDP is so effective that can it be adapted for advanced gastric cancer with para-aortic lymph node enlargement for downstaging.  相似文献
