Purpose

Almonds have shown to beneficially modify some cardiovascular risk factors in clinical trials conducted in diverse ethnic populations but this relationship has never been tested in Koreans. Thus, we tested the impact of almonds consumed as a snack within the context of a typical Korean diet on cardiovascular risk factors.

Methods

We conducted a randomized, crossover trial in a free-living setting with a 2-week run-in period, two 4-week intervention phases, and a 2-week washout period between interventions. Eighty four overweight/obese participants (11 M/73 F; 52.4 ± 0.6 year; 25.4 ± 0.22 kg/m2) consumed either 56 g of almonds or isocaloric cookies daily for 4 weeks.

Results

Mean % daily energy intake at baseline was 64.8, 21.3, and 14.9% from carbohydrate, fat, and protein, respectively. The addition of 56 g of almonds daily decreased carbohydrate energy to 55.0%, increased fat to 32.0%, and maintained protein at 14.7%. Consuming the almonds increased intake of MUFA by 192.3%, PUFA by 84.5%, vitamin E by 102.7%, and dietary fiber by 11.8% and decreased % energy from carbohydrate by 14.1%. Total caloric intake was increased by the almonds, but body weight, waist circumference, and body composition were not affected. Almonds in overweight and obese Korean adults decreased TC, LDL-C, and non-HDL-C by 5.5, 4.6, and 6.4%, respectively, compared to the cookie control (P ≤ 0.05). Almonds increased plasma α-tocopherol by 8.5% (P ≤ 0.05) from the baseline and tended to increase its value as compared to cookies (P = 0.055). Neither the almonds nor cookies altered plasma protein carbonyls, MDA or oxLDL. Of serum inflammatory markers, IL-10 was decreased by almond intake (P ≤ 0.05), and ICAM-1, IL-1β, and IL-6 tended to be lower with almonds, compared to the cookies.

Conclusions

Almonds at 56 g/day consumed as a snack favorably modified the Korean diet by increasing MUFA, PUFA, vitamin E, and dietary fiber intake and decreasing % energy intake from carbohydrate. Almonds also enhanced plasma α-tocopherol status and serum TC and LDL-C in overweight and obese Koreans. Thus, including almonds in typical Korean diets as a snack can help healthy overweight/obese individuals improve nutritional status and reduce their risk for CVD.

We examined the differential impact of exposure to smoking-related graphic health warnings (GHWs) on risk perceptions and intentions to quit among different audience segments characterized by gender, race/ethnic group, and presence of chronic disease condition.

Specifically, we sought to test whether GHWs that portray specific groups (in terms of gender, race, and chronic disease conditions) are associated with differences in risk perception and intention to quit among smokers who match the portrayed group. We used data from Project CLEAR, which oversampled lower SES groups as well as race/ethnic minority groups living in the Greater Boston area (n = 565). We fitted multiple linear regression models to examine the impact of exposure to different GHWs on risk perceptions and quit intentions. After controlling for age, gender, education and household income, we found that women who viewed GHWs portraying females reported increased risk perception as compared to women who viewed GHWs portraying men. However, no other interactions were found between the groups depicted in GHWs and audience characteristics. The findings suggest that audience segmentation of GHWs may have limited impact on risk perceptions and intention to quit smoking among adult smokers.  相似文献

Background

Ifenprodil as a specific antagonist of NMDA receptors containing a dominant NR2B subunit exhibits age-dependent anticonvulsant action. Possible changes of this action due to status epilepticus (SE) elicited at early stage of development were studied using cortical epileptic afterdischarges (ADs) as a model.

Methods

Lithium-pilocarpine SE was induced at postnatal day 12 and effects of ifenprodil were studied 3, 6, 9, and 13?days after SE in rat pups with implanted epidural electrodes. Controls (LiPAR) received saline instead of pilocarpine. ADs were elicited by low frequency stimulation of sensorimotor cortex. Intensity of stimulation current increased in 18 steps from 0.2 to 15?mA. Ifenprodil (20?mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally (ip) after the stimulation with 3.5-mA current. Threshold for four different phenomena as well as duration of ADs were evaluated.

Results

The threshold for the transition into the limbic type of ADs was higher in 15-day-old SE rats than in LiPAR controls. Opposite difference was found in 18-day-old animals, older rats did not exhibit any difference. Isolated significant changes in total duration of ADs were found after high stimulation intensities. These changes appeared in 18-day-old rats where ADs were shorter in SE than in control LiPAR rats.

Conclusions

Changes in ifenprodil action were found only in the first week after SE but not in the second week. Interpretation of the results is complicated by failure of significant differences between SE and LiPAR rats probably due to a high dose of paraldehyde.  相似文献

Abstract

Objective: This study describes the first use of a robotic walker in youth and young adults with cerebral palsy (CP) Gross Motor Function Classification (GMFCS) IV.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted before and after each robotic walker trial. Interviews were recorded, then transcribed and subjected to thematic analysis.

Results: Five participants (4 male, 13–22?years of age) with quadriplegia secondary to CP were recruited. Four individuals with mixed tone quadriplegia GMFCS IV were able to independently walk with the device. One individual with significant dyskinesia was unable to utilize the device. The assessment team included two physiotherapists, an occupational therapist, a physiatrist and three engineers. Major themes related to physical and social impacts were identified. Some physical advantages include the ability to walk hands-free and promotion of physical fitness. Examples of physical barriers include limited harness design and large device size. Social advantages include increased independence and peer engagement. Finally, a social disadvantage identified was limited use on uneven terrains.

Discussion: Suggestions for modifications for identified challenges and disadvantages include decreasing the size of the robotic walker, more harness designs, decreasing the force required to take an initial step, adding a joy stick for user control and creating a more versatile base that can be used on different terrains such as ice or baseball fields.

Conclusion: Robotics holds great hope for individuals with CP where mobility options are limited. Physical and social advantages are evident. Recommendations for future improvement and studies of use in exercise and participation are provided.

  • As youth and young adults with cerebral palsy age, options for mobilization can become limited with challenges in placing them in a walking device due to size and numerous other physical limitations.

The mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEN) is frequently contaminating animal feeds including feed used in aquaculture. In the present study, the effects of dietary exposure to ZEN on carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) were investigated. ZEN at three different concentrations (low dose: 332 µg kg−1, medium dose: 621 µg kg−1 and high dose: 797 µg kg−1 final feed, respectively) was administered to juvenile carp for four weeks. Additional groups received the mycotoxin for the same time period but were fed with the uncontaminated diet for two more weeks to examine the reversibility of the ZEN effects. No effects on growth were observed during the feeding trial, but effects on haematological parameters occurred. In addition, an influence on white blood cell counts was noted whereby granulocytes and monocytes were affected in fish treated with the medium and high dose ZEN diet. In muscle samples, marginal ZEN and α-zearalenol (α-ZEL) concentrations were detected. Furthermore, the genotoxic potential of ZEN was confirmed by analysing formation of micronuclei in erythrocytes. In contrast to previous reports on other fish species, estrogenic effects measured as vitellogenin concentrations in serum samples were not increased by dietary exposure to ZEN. This is probably due to the fact that ZEN is rapidly metabolized in carp.  相似文献

BackgroundItaly has been one of the most affected countries in the world by COVID-19. There has been increasing concern regarding the impact of COVID‐19 on patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), particularly in patients treated with immunosuppressants or biologics. The aim of our study is to understand the incidence of COVID-19 in a large cohort of patients with IBD. Furthermore, we analyzed possible risk factors for infection and severity of COVID-19.MethodsThis was an observational study evaluating the impact of COVID-19 on IBD patients in a single tertiary center. A 23 multiple-choice-question anonymous survey was administered to 1200 patients with IBD between March 10th and June 10th 2020.Results1158 questionnaires were analyzed. The majority of patients had Crohn's disease (CD) (60%) and most of them were in clinical remission. Among the 26 patients (2.2%) who tested positive for COVID-19, only 5 (3CD) were on biological treatment and none required hospitalization. Two patients died and were on treatment with mesalazine only. Of the 1158 patients, 521 were on biological therapy, which was discontinued in 85 (16.3%) and delayed in 195 patients (37.4%). A worsening of IBD symptoms was observed in 200 patients on biological therapy (38.4%). Most of these patients, 189 (94.5%), had stopped or delayed biological treatment, while 11 (5.5%) had continued their therapy regularly (p<0.001).ConclusionsOur data are in line with the current literature and confirm a higher incidence compared to the general population. Biological therapy for IBD seems to not be a risk factor for infection and should not be discontinued in order to avoid IBD relapse.  相似文献

Reactivations of BK polyoma virus (BKPyV) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) frequently cause life- and graft-threatening complications after renal transplantation. Both viruses are dependent on the mTOR pathway for replication. In this study we investigated the association of viral replication with mTOR activity in peripheral lymphocytes of renal transplant recipients. A flow-cytometry based assay for the measurement of Thr389 p70S6k phosphorylation, a surrogate marker of the mTOR pathway was established. Forty-eight adult renal transplant recipients were recruited to measure p70S6k activity in their peripheral blood mononuclear cells. This data set in conjunction with information concerning previous replication of BKPyV and HCMV was examined for correlations. Episodes of BKPyV replication were significantly associated with increased p70S6k phosphorylation in CD4+ T lymphocytes (p = 0.0002) and CD19+ B lymphocytes (p = 0.0073). HCMV infection of patients with a high-risk HCMV constellation of donor and recipient (D+/R−) was associated with increased p70S6k phosphorylation in CD19+ B lymphocytes (p = 0.0325). These associations were found to be independent of the trough levels of the immunosuppressive drugs. Conclusion: P70S6k phosphorylation in peripheral lymphocytes is associated with BKPyV reactivations and to a lesser extent with HCMV infections in renal transplant recipients.  相似文献
