Objective: The guiding criteria are considered the backbone of Chinese medicine. They have previously been described as functional features (symptoms) leading to the overall assessment of human functions on the basis of a regulatory (cybernetic) model referring to the I Ging. Methods: The Heidelberg model can explain symptoms such as created by "heat" on a rational physiological level. Results & Conclusion: The overall of physiological symptoms are shown as a schematic draft. The basis of "heat" is considered to be a general increase of microcirculation in the periphery. This leads to a couple of local pathophysiological consequences and sensations like 1) red tongue (the tongue is considered an embryological somatotopic system). 2) Sensation of warmth (by increase of capillary flow). 3) pre-inflammatory state, leading to pain modalities like "worse if pressed", as inflammations tend to be increasingly painful under pressure; 4) reddish skin, the mechanisms by which this is induced may include the release of substance P, therefore accompanied by burning sensation. Systemic pathophysiological consequences may include. Relative lack of fluid in the larger vessels, as fluid supplies peripheral capillary flow. This may lead to water saving mechanisms like thirst, dry mucosa with do, mouth, dry nose, dry lips, dry skin, and also dry stool, yellow and sparse urine.  相似文献

This paper describes a national experiment in the licensing of full text information in journals, primarily in the fields of science, technology and medicine. It discusses the initiative of the federal government of Canada through the creation of the Canada Foundation for Innovation as a new funding agency, with an objective of improving research and creativity in Canadian science. The successful efforts initiated by the Canadian Association of Research Libraries/Association des bibliothèques de recherche du Canada to create a funding opportunity to develop the 'information infrastructure' for Canadian researchers and the resulting Canadian National Site Licensing Project (CNSLP) progress is discussed. The evolution of a project governance structure to maintain the support of the 64 participating institutions is reviewed and the need to develop an appropriate exit strategy at the conclusion of the federal funding is also considered.  相似文献

The author presents a study of the personality structure, youth development and the role of interhuman conflicts in the work situation and the family, in the causation and course of Menière's disease, the somatopsychic reactions of the patients to the illness, and the principles of a form of psychotherapy which was combined with the regular E.N.T. check-ups and treatment. The results confirm and extend previous work by other researchers. A testable hypothesis about the specific psychosomatic etiology of Menière's disease is formulated and presented.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to establish anti-tumour potency of the new oral platinum drug JM216 and its metabolite JM118 in relation to the platinum (Pt)-DNA adduct formation, glutathione (GSH)-levels, and p53 status in human cancer cell lines with different sensitivities to cisplatin (CDDP). These parameters were studied in the CDDP sensitive human germ cell cancer cell line Tera and the small-cell lung cancer cell line GLC4 and their sublines with in vitro acquired CDDP resistance, Tera-CP and GLC4-CDDP, in a human ovarian cancer cell line transfected with mutant p53 (A2780/mt273) and with an empty vector as control (A2780/cmv), and in the intrinsic CDDP resistant human non-small-cell lung cancer cell line SW1573/S1 and colon carcinoma cell line Caco-2. Cytotoxicity was tested with the microculture tetrazolium (MTT)-assay. Pt-DNA adduct levels were assessed immunocytochemically. Quantitative analysis was performed by double fluorescence video microscopy. Results were correlated with GSH levels and p53 status of the cell lines. This study showed that both JM216 and JM118 can partially circumvent intrinsic and acquired resistance to CDDP. Drug-induced cytotoxicity only correlated negatively with GSH levels for JM216 and CDDP in the tested unselected cell lines. At equimolar basis, JM216 induced lower levels of Pt-DNA adducts in the various cell lines than JM118 and CDDP, whereas the JM118-induced amount and pattern of Pt-DNA adducts was comparable to CDDP. No difference in initial Pt-DNA adducts levels was observed between cell lines sensitive, acquired or intrinsic resistant to CDDP suggesting a Pt-resistance mechanism based on tolerance or increased repair, rather than decreased initial Pt-DNA adduct formation.  相似文献

Diabetes-prone Bio Breeding (DP-BB) rats spontaneously develop diabetes between 60 and 120 days of age. Diabetes-resistant (DR)-BB rats can be induced to develop diabetes by poly(I:C) and anti-RT6. Here, we studied the effect of pentoxifylline, a potent anti-inflammatory agent, on diabetes development in both BB rat models of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and investigated whether these effects were related to differential modulation of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interleukin-10. When DP-BB rats received pentoxifylline from day 60 onwards, diabetes development was delayed and reduced. The other treatment protocols had no effect. In DR-BB rats, pentoxifylline treatment resulted only in a delay of diabetes development. In both BB rat models, in vivo pentoxifylline treatment potently suppressed TNF-alpha, but only moderately affected interleukin-10 production in vitro. These results show that timing of pentoxifylline treatment determines its protective effect on diabetes development in DP-BB rats. The observed pentoxifylline-induced increase of the interleukin-10/TNF-alpha ratio might be a mechanism for protection or delay of the diabetes development.  相似文献

We investigated the role of hippocampal amyloid pathology in spatial learning impairment of a new mouse line carrying mutated human amyloid precursor protein (APP) and presenilin-1 (PS1) transgenes. The APP + PS1 mice were tested in spatial navigation in the water maze and in position discrimination in the T-maze at ages of 3-4 and 11-12 months, before and after the appearance of first amyloid plaques. The APP + PS1 mice were impaired in water maze acquisition and retention only at the age of 11-12 months, but performed equally to controls in the T-maze task at both ages. In the impaired older age group, the levels of total Abeta1-42 in the hippocampus of APP + PS1 mice correlated negatively with the retention score. Here we show for the first time that the age-dependent impairment in memory retention in the traditional water maze of APP + PS1 mice correlates with the amount of total Abeta in hippocampus even at a stage when the amyloid deposits cover less than 1% of the hippocampal volume.  相似文献

Both differences and similarities exist between mammalian species in the projections from entorhinal cortex to the hippocampal formation. In most species, layer II cells of the entorhinal cortex project to the dentate gyrus, and they terminate in the outer two-thirds of the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus. The axons from layer III cells project bilaterally to areas CA(1) and CA(3) of the hippocampus, terminating in the stratum lacunosum moleculare. We have analyzed these projections in mice, and in general, the entorhinal cortex-to-hippocampus projections are similar to those in rats. Axons from layer II neurons terminate in the outer and middle thirds of the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus, and axons from layer III neurons terminate bilaterally in the stratum lacunosum moleculare of areas CA(1) and CA(3), and in the molecular layer of the subiculum. However, in contrast to rat, mouse entorhinal cortex neurons do not appreciably project to the contralateral dentate gyrus. Most species, including mice, show a similar topographical organization of the entorhinal-hippocampal projections, with neurons in the lateral part of both the lateral and medial entorhinal cortex projecting to the dorsal part or septal pole of the hippocampus, whereas the projection to the ventral hippocampus originates primarily from neurons in medial parts of the entorhinal cortex.  相似文献

We have examined the effects of the presence of the mutated human presenilin 1 gene (M146L; hps1*) on lesion-induced sprouting in the hippocampus of the mouse (C57/CBA). The entorhinal cortex was unilaterally lesioned with ibotenic acid in adult, male mice. Four weeks later the subsequent axonal sprouting in the dentate gyrus was analysed, by measuring the density of the synaptophysin immunocytochemical staining in the termination area of the entorhinal cortex axons. The data demonstrate that mice expressing either the human presenilin 1 gene (hps1) or the hps1* gene display a significantly increased density of immunocytochemical staining for synaptophysin, indicative of axonal sprouting, compared to the control mice. No (or a very small) sprouting response is observed in mice expressing the normal mouse ps1 gene. Taken together, these data indicate that the presence of a human ps1 gene, normal or with an Alzheimer's disease mutation, leads to enhanced plasticity in the mouse brain.  相似文献

AIMS: The relationship between alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was studied in 147 male former members of the civilian resistance against the Nazi occupation of Holland during World War II. METHODS: The subjects were interviewed at home. Measures included rating of current PTSD and a self-report measure of smoking and alcohol use. RESULTS: The weekly alcohol consumption reported by veterans was substantially below that of the general population. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in self-reported alcohol consumption between veterans with and without current PTSD. Cigarette smoking, however, was more prevalent in those with current PTSD. CONCLUSIONS: The absence in these veterans of a correlation between PTSD and alcohol consumption is contrary to the results of most studies on this subject. It may be related to the exclusion from organized resistance activities of people prone to the over-consumption of alcohol. It is hypothesized that, in trauma survivors, current substance use is associated with peri-traumatic patterns of psychological tension-reduction modes.  相似文献
