BACKGROUND: Dietary carbohydrates vary in their ability to raise blood glucose and insulin levels, which, in turn, influence levels of sex hormones and insulin-like growth factors. We analyzed the effect of type and amount of carbohydrates on ovarian cancer risk, using the glycemic index (GI) and the glycemic load (GL) measurement in a large case-control study conducted in Italy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cases included 1031 women with incident, histologically confirmed epithelial ovarian cancer, from four Italian regions. Controls included 2411 women admitted to the same hospital networks for acute, non-neoplastic conditions. Average daily GI and GL were calculated from a validated food frequency questionnaire. Odds ratios (OR) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: Ovarian cancer was directly associated with dietary GI (OR for highest versus lowest quartile = 1.7, 95% CI 1.3-2.1) and GL (OR = 1.7, 95% CI 1.3-2.1). The associations were observed in pre- and postmenopausal women, and they remained consistent across strata of major covariates identified. CONCLUSIONS: This study supports the hypothesis of a direct association between GI and GL and ovarian cancer risk and, consequently, of a possible role of hyperinsulinemia/insulin resistance in ovarian cancer development. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: 1) Examine associations between visceral adipose tissue (VAT), subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue (SAAT), and anthropometric and demographic variables; 2) generate and cross-validate prediction equations for estimating VAT and SAAT in overweight Latino children. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. PARTICIPANTS: 196 overweight 8-13-year-old Latino youth. Two-thirds (n = 131) were randomly assigned to a development group to generate prediction equations for VAT and SAAT; one-third (n = 65) was used as a cross-validation group. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Anthropometric measurements (height, weight, skinfold thicknesses, and circumferences) were performed. VAT and SAAT were measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). RESULTS: The strongest univariate correlate for VAT was waist circumference (WC) (r = 0.65, p < 0.01) while the strongest correlate for SAAT was hip circumference (r = 0.88, p < 0.001). Regression analyses showed approximately 50% of the variance in VAT was explained by WC (43.8%), Tanner stage (4.2%) and calf skinfold (1.7%). Variance in the SAAT model was explained by WC (77.8%), triceps skinfold (4.2%) and gender (2.3%). Residual analyses showed no bias in either equation. Though mean differences between measured and predicted VAT and SAAT were small, there was a large degree of variability at the individual level especially for VAT. CONCLUSIONS: Both VAT and SAAT prediction equations performed well at the group level, but the relatively high degree of variability suggests limited clinical utility of the VAT equation. ObjectiveIn this study we investigated the properties of infraslow oscillations (ISOs) ?0.05 Hz and delta frequency band in the patients during the epileptic discharges and in healthy persons who performed a variety of mental and physical tasks.MethodsThe EEG signals were recorded on the subjects who were divided into three groups. In the first group were patients with global epileptic seizures, while in the second group were patients with focal epileptic seizures. In the third group were healthy volunteers who performed different mental and physical tasks.ResultsBy analyzing EEG data of epileptic patients, we showed that frequency peak exists at 1.5 Hz which is typical for general and focal epileptic seizures. In the type of general epileptic discharges the role of the slow rhythms at 0.05 Hz, was particularly pronounced and their origin was in fluctuations of cortical neural network. The properties of parameter spectral coherency of ISOs in healthy persons point to their important role in brain functioning.ConclusionsOur results suggested that the role of ISOs could be extended, because they were detected in healthy human subjects during carrying out different tasks. Investigating the properties of parameter spectral coherency, we showed that in this case correlation between different regions of the brain was significantly modulated with ISOs. 相似文献

Tissue microarrays (TMAs) represent a powerful method for undertaking large‐scale tissue‐based biomarker studies. While TMAs offer several advantages, there are a number of issues specific to their use which need to be considered when employing this method. Given the investment in TMA‐based research, guidance on design and execution of experiments will be of benefit and should help researchers new to TMA‐based studies to avoid known pitfalls. Furthermore, a consensus on quality standards for TMA‐based experiments should improve the robustness and reproducibility of studies, thereby increasing the likelihood of identifying clinically useful biomarkers. In order to address these issues, the National Cancer Research Institute Biomarker and Imaging Clinical Studies Group organized a 1‐day TMA workshop held in Nottingham in May 2012. The document herein summarizes the conclusions from the workshop. It includes guidance and considerations on all aspects of TMA‐based research, including the pre‐analytical stages of experimental design, the analytical stages of data acquisition, and the postanalytical stages of data analysis. A checklist is presented which can be used both for planning a TMA experiment and interpreting the results of such an experiment. For studies of cancer biomarkers, this checklist could be used as a supplement to the REMARK guidelines. 相似文献
