Yoghurt is active against some human pathogens, so this experiment tested whether it is also active against the salivary microflora. A clinical trial was designed, with volunteers aged between 23 and 37 years. Initially, for 8 weeks, they consumed neither yoghurt nor casein-free soybean ice cream (phase 1). They were then split randomly into test (yoghurt) and control (ice cream) groups and required to consume 125 g of these foods twice daily for 8 weeks (phase 2) and then to avoid them for the following 2 weeks (phase 3). Many potential sources of microbial fluctuation were standardized. Salivary samples were then collected at regular intervals of 2 weeks. For each group and phase, the mean logarithms of the salivary counts for total viable flora, oral streptococci, mutans streptococci, lactobacilli and Candida were calculated. The prevalence of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus was also assessed. Twenty test and 22 control participants completed the study. At phase 2, the mean for mutans streptococci was lower in the test than in the control group (3.6 vs. 4.0 log colony-forming units/ml; P=0.02). Moreover, the mean had decreased in all test participants with high phase 1 means for lactobacilli as compared to only 36.4% of those with low phase 1 means (P=0.01). L. bulgaricus was transiently detected in three test participants during phase 2. These results suggest that yoghurt does have some activity against the salivary microflora, but this does not seem to be due to the installation of yoghurt microorganisms in the mouth.  相似文献

The present work analyzes possible increases in resistance to wear of nickel-titanium endodontic instruments that have undergone a process of ionic implantation. ProFile .04 taper #25 instruments were subjected to ionic implantation with bands of nitrogen ions of 250 KeV, currents in the order of 10 microA/cm2, and doses of 2 x 10(17) ions/ cm2. The instruments were used to make preparations in acrylic endodontic training blocks. Scanning electron microscopic investigations showed that after 60 s of work inside the endodontic training blocks nonionic implanted control instruments showed small modifications in their blades, and their tips showed the first signs of wear. After 240 s the control instruments showed consistent signs of wear and frequent changes to their surfaces. After 240 s of use the ionic-implanted instruments did not present any significant changes in the micromorphology of their surfaces. The implanted instruments did not manifest the typical signs of wear and did not show the surface changes that quickly affect the working life of untreated endodontic instruments manufactured from nickel-titanium.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term and long-term treatment effects of rapid maxillary expansion in 2 groups of subjects treated with the Haas appliance. Treatment outcomes were evaluated before and after the peak in skeletal maturation, as assessed by the cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) method, in a sample of 42 patients compared to a control sample of 20 subjects. Posteroanterior cephalograms were analyzed for the treated subjects at T1 (pretreatment), T2 (immediate post-expansion) and T3 (long-term observation), and were available at T1 and at T3 for the controls. The mean age (years: months) at T1 was 11:10 for both the treated and the control groups. The mean ages at T3 also were comparable (20:6 for the treated group and 17:8 for the controls). Following expansion and retention (2 months on average), fixed standard edgewise appliances were placed. The study included transverse measurements on dentoalveolar structures, maxillary and mandibular bases and other craniofacial regions (nasal, zygomatic, orbital, and cranial). Treated and control samples were divided into 2 groups according to individual skeletal maturation. The early-treated and early-control groups had not reached the pubertal peak in skeletal growth velocity at T1 (CVM 1 to 3), whereas the late-treated and late-control groups were during or slightly after the peak at T1 (CVM 4 to 6). The group treated before the pubertal peak showed significantly greater short-term increases in the width of the nasal cavities. In the long-term, maxillary skeletal width, maxillary intermolar width, lateronasal width, and lateroorbitale width were significantly greater in the early-treated group. The late-treated group exhibited significant increases in lateronasal width and in maxillary and mandibular intermolar widths. Rapid Maxillary Expansion treatment before the peak in skeletal growth velocity is able to induce more pronounced transverse craniofacial changes at the skeletal level.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of nickel and chromium ions in salivary and serum samples from patients treated with fixed orthodontic appliances. A second aim of this study was to determine any significant changes in these concentrations during any period of the treatment time. Saliva and blood samples were collected from 100 patients ranging in age from 12 to 33 years. Twenty samples from each group were obtained. The groups were as follows: In the first group, saliva and blood samples were collected before insertion of the fixed appliances. In the second, third, fourth, and fifth groups, samples were collected at 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, and 2 years after appliance insertion. The serum was prepared by centrifuging the blood samples at 3000 rpm for 10 minutes. The fixed appliances consisted of an average of 4 bands and 20 bonded brackets. No palatal or lingual appliances welded to bands or extraoral auxiliary appliances were used. The spectrophotometric determinations were carried out using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results indicated certain differences in the amounts of nickel and chromium released from fixed orthodontic appliances during different periods of treatment. The Mann-Whitney U-test from the SPSS statistics program was used to analyze the significance of the differences between no-appliance samples and those obtained with the appliances present. In the serum, there were statistically significant increases in ion concentration in the second-year groups. In saliva samples, nickel and chromium reached their highest levels in the first month and decreased to their initial level in the rest of the groups. It can be concluded that fixed orthodontic appliances release measurable amount of nickel and chromium when placed in the mouth, but this increase doesn't reach toxic levels for nickel and chromium in the saliva and serum.  相似文献

AIM: To compare the ability of two Enterococcus faecalis strains to survive exposure to an irrigation solution containing a high concentration of tetracycline in the root canals of bovine teeth. METHODOLOGY: The root canals of twelve bovine incisor root sections were chemo-mechanically prepared using commercially available drills, sodium hypochlorite and ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid. The root sections were divided into two groups and inoculated with either a tetracycline sensitive or resistant strain of E. faecalis. The strains are isogenic, however one contains a conjugative transposon related to Tn916 which confers resistance to tetracycline, and the other strain is sensitive to the antibiotic. After 26 days of incubation the root canals were irrigated using one of three solutions (sterile distilled water, 50% ethanol or tetracycline at a concentration of 30 mg mL(-1)). The roots were sampled by grinding dentine and canal contents and the debris collected were incubated in broth to assess growth. RESULTS: Irrigation with sterile distilled water or 50% ethanol did not remove all of the cells present. The tetracycline containing solution was efficient in preventing any growth of sensitive E. faecalis, however the resistant strain was able to survive a 5 min exposure at 30 mg mL(-1). CONCLUSIONS: The presence of the Tn916-like conjugative transposon containing the tetracycline resistance gene tet(M) allowed an E. faecalis strain to survive irrigation using a solution containing an extremely high concentration of tetracycline in a root canal model.  相似文献

The National Board Dental Hygiene Examination program is a part of the process for licensing dental hygienists. The examination assesses theoretical and applied knowledge in the basic biomedical, dental, and dental hygiene sciences, as well as community health. Standards for licensure examinations recommend that test publishers demonstrate a relationship between examination content and actual practice. METHOD: To this end, a validity study was conducted, which involved the definition of the domain of entry-level dental hygiene practice using 56 competencies; the conduct of a practice analysis survey designed to rate the importance of these competencies; and the linking of competencies to content elements in accordance with the competencies' importance ratings. Of the 3941 surveys distributed, 1841 participants responded and, of these, 1284 were full-time practitioners. The importance ratings for the competencies were translated into numbers of items. The number of items devoted to each competency was distributed across all applicable elements of the existing content specifications based upon the knowledge needed to support the realization of the competency. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The findings confirmed the adequacy of the content specifications in effect prior to 2005. However, based on this validity study, 2 sub areas of relatively little significance were eliminated, and 2 new areas were introduced. Specifically, Clinical Testing under Assessing Patient Characteristics (one item) and Professional Methods of Administering Fluorides under Using Preventive Agents (one item) were eliminated, and Dental Hygiene Treatment Strategies was incorporated with 4 items, and Professional Responsibilities was added with a total of 28 items.  相似文献

There have been a number of reports of brain abscess suggesting an odontogenic etiology after dental treatment procedures or oral infections, but the diagnosis was mainly by exclusion rather than based on evidence. We present a case of a brain abscess due to Strepto-coccus constellatus in a 27-year-old-immunocompetent woman who underwent extraction of the primary molar and eradication of a radicular cyst some weeks before.  相似文献

Background. Tissue engineering of autogenous oral mucosa is a significant enrichment for various indications in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Besides preprosthetic surgery and prelamination of microvascular fasciocutaneous flaps, interdisciplinary work such as reconstruction procedures in cases of hypospadias and epispadias are the main indications for tissue-engineered oral mucosa. Results. One main advantage of this technique is the reduction of second surgical procedures. The morbidity is decreased and the quality of life may be significantly increased. The manufacture of tissue-engineered autogenous oral mucosa up to 15 cm2 requires a small biopsy of oral mucosa (4–8 mm3) and 40 ml of autogenous serum. Discussion. The clinical and morphological long-term follow-up after different surgical procedures with tissue-engineered oral mucosa establishes this technique as an excellent additional tool in oral and maxillofacial surgery.  相似文献
