Sport activities and exercise as part of routine cancer care in children and adolescents

The burden of morbidities affecting cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems, metabolism, and psychosocial health in young patients with cancer is high. It is alarming that patients and survivors of childhood cancer are less physically active than their healthy peers, since exercise may improve many of these conditions significantly and is associated with reduction in all‐cause mortality in the general population. Systematic integration of exercise programing into cancer care remains an exception, above all in children. Pediatric oncologists may contribute to a culture shift towards educating patients and stakeholders on the benefit of exercise and sports for children and adolescents with cancer.     

Evaluation of the wound healing potentials of two subspecies of Hypericum perforatum on cultured NIH3T3 fibroblasts

For centuries, Hypericum perforatum has been used in folk medicine to treat wounds. In the present study, the wound healing activities of extracts of H. perforatum ssp. perforatum (HPP) and H. perforatum ssp. veronense (HPV) were evaluated by comparing with a titrated extract of Centella asiatica (TECA) on NIH3T3 fibroblasts. The cells were incubated with the extracts. Using microscopical methods by staining cells, mitotic ability, morphological changes and collagen production in the fibroblasts were evaluated as parameters to approach possible wound repair mechanism(s). The wound healing activity caused an increase in the percentage of polygonal fibroblasts and in collagen granule numbers in fibroblasts of HPP and HPV. At 1 µg/mL, HPP caused a greater increase in mitotic cell numbers than HPV. The most increases in polygonal cell numbers were observed with HPV at 1 and 10 µg/mL. The number of collagen granules was increased with 1 µg/mL HPV being higher than HPP. As an indication of cytotoxic effects, round cells in response to HPV and HPP extracts, were found to be increased in concentrations higher than 10–50 µg/mL. The results indicated that the two subspecies of H. perforatum have different wound healing profiles as a result of the fibroblast migration and stimulation of collagen synthesis. Effects of age and gender on neural correlates of emotion imagery

Mental imagery is part of people''s own internal processing and plays an important role in everyday life, cognition and pathology. The neural network supporting mental imagery is bottom‐up modulated by the imagery content. Here, we examined the complex associations of gender and age with the neural mechanisms underlying emotion imagery. We assessed the brain circuits involved in emotion mental imagery (vs. action imagery), controlled by a letter detection task on the same stimuli, chosen to ensure attention to the stimuli and to discourage imagery, in 91 men and women aged 14–65 years using fMRI. In women, compared with men, emotion imagery significantly increased activation within the right putamen, which is involved in emotional processing. Increasing age, significantly decreased mental imagery‐related activation in the left insula and cingulate cortex, areas involved in awareness of ones'' internal states, and it significantly decreased emotion verbs‐related activation in the left putamen, which is part of the limbic system. This finding suggests a top‐down mechanism by which gender and age, in interaction with bottom‐up effect of type of stimulus, or directly, can modulate the brain mechanisms underlying mental imagery.     

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy plus radical surgery in locally advanced cervical cancer during pregnancy: a case report

Management of cervicocarcinoma during pregnancy is influenced by gestational age, stage of disease, and patient's desire to maintain her pregnancy. We report a case of a pregnant patient with locally advanced cervicocarcinoma successfully treated by neoadjuvant chemotherapy, followed by caesarean section and radical surgery.     

CO2 laser therapy of the Bartholin's gland cyst: surgical data and functional short- and long-term results

The Bartholin's gland cyst is a condition that occurs in approximately 2% of women, most of whom are of reproductive age. Although benign, it is associated with significant patient discomfort. Definitive treatment involves the surgical removal of the entire cyst. The objective of this study was to describe an alternative conservative surgical technique with CO(2) laser adopted in our institution and to evaluate the feasibility, complication rate, and results obtained with this technique in an office setting. Our study showed that CO(2) laser treatment of the Bartholin's gland cyst can be carried out safely in an outpatient setting, with minimum patient discomfort and high long-term cure rates.
