Solitary sexual activity is a free, safe, and accessible way to experience sexual pleasure. Despite these advantages, research on masturbation in later life is highly understudied. Using data from a cross-sectional probability-based survey of 3816 European adults (mean age 67 years; range 60–75 years), we explored several sociodemographic, health, attitudinal, and sexual behavioral factors associated with reported masturbation frequency. Across all countries, between 41% and 65% of men and 27% and 40% of women reported any masturbation in the preceding month. Satisfaction with sexual activity and attitudes related to disapproval of sex without love were significant predictors of reported masturbation in almost all countries and in both genders. Age, education, self-perceived health, and depression were for the most part predictive of men’s reported masturbation, but not women’s. Generally, those believing sex is beneficial to older people were more likely to masturbate, while less permissive attitudes decreased the likelihood of reporting masturbation. To improve healthy sexual aging, misinformation about masturbation and sexual attitudes in older people need to be addressed.
Accumulating evidence suggests that supervised and adapted physical activity provides cognitive benefits for individuals with eating disorders (EDs). The mechanisms underlying the benefits of physical activity are poorly understood. Addressing this knowledge gap may inform the appropriate integration of structured physical activity into eating disorders treatment and recovery. We draw attention to recent findings in the study of the impact of physical activity on the brain, and we describe the neurostructural and neurocognitive changes associated with physical activity observed in various clinical and nonclinical populations. Considering the identified impairment in brain volume- and/or neurocognitive function in various EDs, we propose that positive effects of physical activity may play a meaningful role in successful ED treatment. Accordingly, we outline research steps for closing the knowledge gap on how physical activity may aid in ED recovery, and emphasize the need to combine measures of cognitive and behavioral responses to physical activity, with technology capable of measuring changes in brain structure and/or function. 相似文献
The uptake of persistent polychlorinated hydrocarbons (PCHs) by four avian species was investigated at upper trophic levels of two aquatic food chains of the lower Fox River and Green Bay, Wisconsin. Accumulation of total and specific planar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDDs), and H411E rat hepatoma cell bioassay-derived 2,37,8-tetrachlorodibenzop-dioxin equivalents (TCDD-EQ) was evaluated in Forster's tern (Sterna forsteri) and common tern (Sterna hirundo) chicks, and in tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) and red-winged blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) nestlings from colonies nesting in several locations within the watershed. Concentrations of the PCHs were greatest in eggs and chicks of the two tern species, less in the tree swallows and least in the red-winged blackbirds. Young of all four species accumulated total PCBs, PCB congeners 77, 105, 126, and 169, and TCDD-EQ. The young birds also accumulated small concentrations of several 2,3,7,8-sbustituted PCDF and PCDD congeners. Uptake rates for certain of the PCHs for the Forster's tern chicks were: 15 g/day for total PCBs, 70, 200, 6.5, and 0.14 ng/day for PCB congeners 77, 105, 126, and 169, respectively, and 270 g/day for TCDD-EQ. Principal components analysis revealed that the patterns of PCH concentrations in the samples were influenced by species of bird, their age (or length of exposure) and nesting location. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that exposure of avian species to contaminants derived from aquatic food chains can be characterized and quantified for the purposes of ecological risk assessment. 相似文献
In Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis (HSPN), glomeruli may develop cellular crescents composed of infiltrating monocytes and proliferating renal epithelia. In this study, we demonstrate that peripheral human monocytes can release an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like substance detectable by a radioreceptor assay, which recognizes both EGF and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha), but not with a radioimmunoassay, which recognizes only EGF. Furthermore, we report that urine from pediatric patients during the acute phase of HSPN contains a similar EGF-like species in addition to the endogenous EGF which is normally present. The EGF-like material was not present in urine from nine healthy children or from six children with acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. The extent of crescent formation in our patients is uncertain, since renal biopsy was performed in only one case. However, we speculate that the urinary material resembling TGF-alpha which appears during the acute phase of HSPN may derive from monocytes infiltrating the kidney. 相似文献
Chronic cyclosporine (CY) nephrotoxicity is a well-known complication of this immunosuppressive agent, which may, in part, be attributed to abnormalities in renal prostaglandin content. We utilized misoprostol (M), a prostaglandin E(1) analog, in a rat model of chronic CY toxicity at 7 and 28 days to determine effectiveness in prevention of the renal damage. After 7 days, there were no differences in weight change, creatinine clearance, or renal scarring in rats treated with vehicle (V), CY, or CY + M; however, renal procollagen alpha 1(I) mRNA levels were increased in CY versus V rats (p < 0.05). In contrast, after 28 days CY rats had significant reductions in weight gain, glomerular filtration rate, and renal blood flow with increases in renal scarring and procollagen alpha 1 (IV) mRNA levels (all p < 0.05 versus V). Addition of M resulted in partial but significant improvement in GFR, RBF, and procollagen alpha 1(IV) mRNA levels, with lessening of the renal scarring. Skin fibroblasts also were incubated with CY and M to assess impact on procollagen MRNA levels. CY augmented fibroblast procollagen mRNA levels which enhanced by a large dose of M, but inhibited with a moderate dose. These data suggest that M improves renal scarring induced by CY by hemodynamic and/or direct effects. 相似文献
Background: upper body, or abdominal, distribution of body fat is associated with a number of metabolic and hormonal aberrations
that could influence resting energy expenditure REE. The purpose of our study was to examine the effects of fat distribution
on REE of 96 morbidly obese premenopausal females. Methods: the study population consisted of three groups of study subjects,
32 with lower body fat distribution (LBD) and waist-to-hip circumference ratios WHR < 0.80, 20 with intermediate (INT) fat
distribution and WHR between 0.80 and 0.85 and 34 females with upper body distribution of fat (UBD) and WHR > 0.85. Indices
measured included: (1) REE; (2) maximal oxygen consumption during an exercise tolerance test (VO2max); (3) basal respiratory quotient (RQ); (4) fasting blood glucose; and (5) serum cholesterol and triglycerides. Results: we
found that morbidly obese women who store fat abdominally (WHR > 0.80) have significantly (p < 0.01) higher REE (kcal per h per BSA) than those with lower body obesity. Levels of triglyceride and glucose of the UBD
group were also higher than those of the LBD subjects, i.e. 35% and 23%, respectively. VO2max and RQ were similar between the study groups, suggesting that the elevated REE of the patients with abdominal adiposity were
likely not the result of their greater muscle mass or differences in substrate utilization. Conclusion: fat distribution affects
REE in morbidly obese premenopausal females, and further research is needed to identify the various entities regulating REE
in the morbidly obese. 相似文献
Objectives: To use linked health and social service databases to determine differences in the use of social services by pregnant women in different managed care systems. Methods: Comparison of service use by women enrolled in a fee-for-service primary care case management program (Maryland Access to Care or MAC), in a capitated health maintenance organization (HMO), or not assigned to managed care using six state databases. Participants included 5181 women receiving Medical Assistance (MA) and delivering in Baltimore City in 1993. Outcome measures were receipt of WIC, AFDC, and Food Stamps. Results: The overall proportions of women receiving WIC, AFDC, and Food Stamps at delivery were 52.7%, 89.2%, and 62.7%, respectively. Women enrolled in an HMO at delivery were less likely to be receiving WIC (adjusted odds ratios, 0.8, 95% CI, 0.69 to 0.93), AFDC (OR, 0.20; CI, 0.03 to 0.43 for women with prior children and OR 0.13; CI, 0.09 to 0.20 for women without prior children), and Food Stamps (OR 0.77; CI, 0.59 to 0.95 for women with prior children and OR, 0.49; CI, 0.35 to 0.67 for women without prior children) than their MAC counterparts. Women not assigned to managed care also generally were less likely than their MAC counterparts to receive WIC (OR 0.55; CI, 0.46, 0.66), AFDC (OR 1.07; CI 0.83,1.30 for women with prior children and OR 0.24; CI 0.18,0.34 for women without prior children), and Food Stamps (OR 0.31; CI 0.08, 0.55 for women with prior children and OR 0.31; CI 0.23, 0.41 for women without prior children). Conclusions: Although many low-income pregnant women qualify for select social services, receipt of WIC and Food Stamps was low. Increasing efforts are needed by managed care systems and public health agencies to ensure delivery of appropriate services for women. 相似文献
