The development of a surveillance system to monitor emergency food relief in New York State.

A representative sample of emergency food relief (EFR) programs was selected on the basis of a census of 1,488 EFR programs in New York State. The census was a two-stage telephone survey. EFR was provided in every county although there was considerable variation in the amount of EFR per county. The soup kitchen and food pantry components of EFR had to be differentiated. The surveillance system was operational one year after the census began.     

Intrafollicular blood flow during human ovulation.

Transvaginal ultrasonography with color flow mapping has been used to study changes in intrafollicular blood flow and morphology during follicular rupture and presumed ovulation in one human volunteer. Detailed monitoring started on day 11 of the menstrual cycle and the follicle began to rupture at 14.30 on day 13. This event was preceded by a defined rise and peak in the level of immunoreactive serum luteinizing hormone (LH) by 42 h and 17 h 20 min, respectively. Blood vessels were clearly visible in the inner ring of the follicle (the granulosa layer) at the time of the LH peak and part of the granulosa (probably containing the oocyte) started to detach before the follicle ruptured. The maximum value for the peak blood velocity in the inner vessels was observed 10 s after the start of follicular rupture and there was a concurrent increase in the impedance to blood flow, as reflected by the resistance index and the pulsatility index. The follicle took 14 min 29 s to empty and the corpus haemorrhagicum started to form about 1 min later. These preliminary data suggest that intrafollicular angiogenesis and changes in blood flow can be monitored by a relatively non-invasive technique. Changes in vascularity might be used to predict imminent ovulation and could possibly be identified or modified biochemically to help achieve or avoid a pregnancy.     

In vivo induction of CD4+ T cell responses by antigens covalently linked to synthetic microspheres does not require adjuvant

Macrophages, dendritic cells or B lymphocytes have been shownto play a major role in the presentation of soluble antigensto CD4⁺ T cells. In contrast, the capacity of these cells topresent particulate antigens such as bacterial or parasiticantigens to T cells remains controversial. To investigate thisquestion, well defined particulate antigens were prepared bycovalent linkage of proteins or peptides to 1 µm in diametersynthetic microspheres. The T cell immunogenicity of such particulateantigens was analyzed in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, a solubleprotein such as hen egg lysozyme (HEL) coupled to beads stimulateda strong proliferative T cell response of lymph node cells fromHEL-primed mice or of specific T cell hybridomas. HEL coupledto beads was presented to the specific T cell hybridomas bysplenocytes or by peritoneal macrophages, but not by lymphomaB cells. Immunization of mice with several different proteinantigens or with a synthetic peptide covalently linked to beadsinduced strong CD4⁺ T cell responses in the absence of adjuvant.The strong in vivo immunogenicity of proteins coupled to beadsdid not result from a non-specific adjuvant effect of beadssince covalent linkage of the antigen to beads was strictlyrequired to induce T cell responses in the absence of adjuvant.In vivo treatment by carrageenan showed that macrophages arerequired for the in vivo stimulation of T cell responses bythese particulate antigens. Thus, these results demonstratedthe role of phagocytic cells, especially macrophages, for invivo presentation of particulate antigens. These particulateantigens represent an interesting approach for the developmentof new vaccines, and for the in vivo analysis of the role ofvarious antigen presenting cells in T cell activation and differentiation.     

Absent chondrodysplasia punctata in a male with an Xp terminal deletion involving the putative region for CDPX1 locus

This is a follow-up report on a male patient with a 46, Y, r(X) karyotype. Although he had no clinico-radiological features of X-linked recessive chondrodysplasia punctata (CDPX1), molecular studies revealed an Xp terminal deletion involving the putative region for the CDPX1 locus (PABX-DXS31). We suspect that the absence of CDPX1 may be attributable to the nature of the disease and the extreme short stature of the patient (mean – 5.6 S.D.). © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.     

Akathisia as a side effect of antipsychotic treatment with quetiapine in a patient with Parkinson's disease.

Due to its low profile for extrapyramidal side-effects, quetiapine has become an alternative to clozapine in the treatment of dopamimetic psychosis in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). We describe the case of a patient with PD who developed severe akathisia, a common complication with classical antipsychotics, with quetiapine.
