Bond strengths of two conventional glass-ionomer cements to irradiated and non-irradiated dentin

This study evaluated the influence of irradiation on the dentin shear bond strength of two conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs). Thirty extracted molars were bisected in the mesio-distal direction. One-half of 20 teeth were irradiated with 60 Gy (5 days/week) for 6 weeks, and then GIC was placed on the irradiated dentin surface (Groups A1, B1). For the other halves of these tooth specimens, the GICs were first placed on their dentin surfaces and then the specimens irradiated (Groups A2, B2). The remaining 10 teeth were bisected and used as non-irradiated controls (Groups C1, C2). The GIC-dentin shear bond strengths were examined. Groups A2 and B2 had significantly lower bond strengths than groups A1, B1, C1, and C2 (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found among groups A1, B1, C1, and C2 (p > 0.05). In conclusion, irradiation may have an adverse effect on the bond strength of GICs depending on the application sequence.     

Endoscopic treatment of a transmigrated intrauterine device to colonic wall: a case report

We report an asymptomatic 23-year-old female patient who was diagnosed to have a transmigrated intrauterine device (IUD) during a routine gynecological examination. After the IUD had been located within the colonic wall by further investigation, the IUD was successfully extracted via transanal route by colonoscopic intervention.     

Narrow band imaging hysteroscopy: a new diagnostic technique in recurrent IVF failure?

Narrow band imaging (NBI) is an optical filter technology that improves the visibility of capillaries, veins and other subtle tissue structures, by narrowing the bandwidth of spectral transmittance using optical filters. In this short communication, we want to share our preliminary experience in assisted reproductive technology patients where we had used NBI hysteroscopy for the evaluation of uterine cavity abnormalities who had previous IVF failure.     

Apical accuracy of two apex-locating handpieces in root canal retreatments of root-end resected teeth

We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of 2 apex locator integrated endodontic motors during retreatment of root-end resected teeth by using 40 extracted incisor teeth. The apical 3 mm of the roots were resected, and the root lengths were recorded as resected length of the roots. Forty roots were randomly divided into 2 groups of 20 to evaluate the 2 handpieces, Tri Auto ZX and TCM Endo V. The working lengths measured during the auto reverse function and during the electronic apex locator function with Tri Auto ZX and TCM Endo V were recorded and compared with resected length of the roots. The repeated measures analysis of variance was used for statistical analyses. Electronic apex locator functions of both devices might be used for apical accuracy, but the auto reverse functions might not be useful to 0.0-mm accuracy in retreatment procedures of root-end resected teeth.     

Sympathetic skin responses in Type-1 diabetic children: relationship to urodynamic findings

AIMS: Cystopathy is an important problem in diabetes mellitus (DM) when diabetes is not well-controlled. In most cases of diabetic csytopathy, autonomic involvement is responsible, which develops insidiously over a long time. We investigated the hand and genital sympathetic skin responses (SSRs) and its relation to urodynamic abnormalities in this group of patients. METHODS: We performed hand and genital SSRs in 24 children with Type-1 DM, whose hemoglobin A1C values were above normal limits. We also recruited 19 healthy children for SSRs measurements. Cystometry was performed in 24 children with Type-1 DM. Based on cystometry findings, these children were classified into two groups as normal (n:6) and abnormal (n:18). The amplitude and latency of hand and genital SSRs of 24 children with Type-1 DM and 19 healthy children were compared. RESULTS: Hand and genital SSRs were obtained from all of the diabetic and healthy children. The mean genital SSRs amplitude in diabetic children was significantly lower than the controls. There was no difference in the mean values of all investigated parameters between the normal group and controls. When compared to the controls, there was prolonged latency and decreased amplitude of genital SSRs and decreased hand SSRs amplitude in abnormal group. CONCLUSIONS: SSR is a non-invasive test for the evaluation of autonomic sympathetic involvement. Our study revealed differences in genital SSR before the manifestations of cystopathy. Children with abnormal urodynamic findings had changes in both hand and genital SSRs. These findings suggest that SSR tests may have a place in the evaluation of diabetic cystopathy in the early asymptomatic period.
