Bacterial leakage in root canals filled with AH Plus and dentine bonding agents

Objective. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of different dentine adhesives in delaying the coronal bacterial leakage of Enterococcus faecalis in filled root canals. Materials and methods. Ninety-five lower incisors of patients >65 years of age were instrumented using the ProTaper® system and were irrigated with 1 mL of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) alternated with 1 mL 17% EDTA between each file change. Final irrigation was performed with 5 mL of 17% EDTA and then flushed with 5 mL of distilled water. The teeth were randomly divided into five experimental groups (n = 15/group) and one of the following dentine adhesives was applied: (1) AdheSE®; (2) Excite® DSC; (3) Clearfil^? Protect Bond; (4) One Coat 7.0; or (5) Control group without adhesive. After filling the root canals, the samples were mounted on a double chamber device to evaluate the bacterial filtration of E. faecalis during a period of 240 days. The results underwent non-parametric Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and comparisons among groups were done using the Log-Rank test. Results. At 240 days, E. faecalis was detected in samples of all groups in the lower chamber. The highest survival value was obtained by One Coat 7.0, giving statistically significant differences from the other groups, whereas Clearfil^? Protect Bond, AdheSE® and Excite® DSC showed similar behaviours, likewise similar to the Control group. Conclusions. One Coat 7.0 adhesive system provides the longest survival value to delay E. faecalis coronal leakage in filled root canals.     

Dermatoses in Latin American Immigrant Children Seen in a Universitary Hospital of Spain

Over the past 10 years Spain has become an important immigrant receiver country as the proximity with Africa and the cultural facilities with Latino-American countries have made of Spain a very attractive place to settle down for immigrants. From 1st January 2007 to 31st December 2007, all the pediatric patients visits (0–14 years old) seen in the units of the Dermatology Section of the University General Hospital of Alicante (Spain) were prospectively recorded. During the study period 3,108 visits were recorded. Of these, 447 (14.3 %) were generated by immigrant children, 243 (54.3 %) being episodes requested by 167 Latin American patients. Latin children consulted mainly in the outpatient clinic, like Spanish children. The most frequent type of dermatoses in these patients was eczema/atopic dermatitis. Infectious dermatitis showed no differences between them and Spaniards, but scabies was six times more frequent in the formers.

Evisceración transvaginal post-histerectomía radical y radioterapia adyuvante

Transvaginal evisceration is a rare situation, with few cases reported in the international literature. This situation normally occurs in postmenopausal women and is associated with previous vaginal surgery, especially hysterectomy. The defect in the vaginal fundus requires emergency surgery, and even resection of the affected section of the bowel, if necessary. We report a case of vaginal evisceration of the small bowel 14 years after radical hysterectomy in a patient with endometrial cancer and vaginal vault prolapse.
