Aim: To evaluate the influence of magnesium‐enriched hydroxyapatite (MHA) (SintLife®) on bone contour preservation and osseointegration at implants placed immediately into extraction sockets. Material and methods: In the mandibular pre‐molar region, implants were installed immediately into extraction sockets of six Labrador dogs. MHA was placed at test sites, while the control sites did not receive augmentation materials. Implants were intended to heal in a submerged mode. After 4 months of healing, the animals were sacrificed, and ground sections were obtained for histomorphometric evaluation. Results: After 4 months of healing, one control implant was not integrated leaving n=5 test and control implants for evaluation. Both at the test and the control sites, bone resorption occurred. While the most coronal bone‐to‐implant contact was similar between test and control sites, the alveolar bony crest outline was maintained to a higher degree at the buccal aspect of the test sites (loss: 0.7 mm) compared with the control sites (loss: 1.2 mm), even though this difference did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: The use of MHA to fill the defect around implants placed into the alveolus immediately after tooth extraction did not contribute significantly to the maintenance of the contours of the buccal alveolar bone crest. Cells are sensitive both to the micro/nanotopographic and chemical features of their surrounding environment. The engineering of the surface properties of biomaterials is then critical to develop bioactive devices with which to elicit appropriate cellular responses. To this regard, the layer by layer (LBL) self assembly technique represents a simple and versatile method to modify surface properties by the deposition of ultrathin films with specific and predetermined properties. In this work biomimetic coatings containing fibronectin, an adhesive glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix, were assembled by means of the LBL technique, and tested for the growth of MG63 human osteoblast-like cells, in order to evaluate their potential for the treatment of materials employed in bone-tissue engineering. As a first step the assembly process was optimized by quartz crystal microbalance measurements and subsequently was repeated on nickel/titanium, silicon and glass samples. The results obtained from the investigation of cell response to the modified surfaces, put in evidence that the deposited nanostructured ultrathin films are effective in promoting cell proliferation. Our results show the high potential of the developed bioactive coatings for the engineering of biomimetic implants and for the optimization of their integration with the surrounding tissues.  相似文献

Pharmacogenomics, the study of variations of DNA and RNA characteristics as related to drug response, has become an integral part of drug development and pharmacovigilance, as reflected by the incorporation of pharmacogenomic data in EU product information. We have designed a simple benchmark test for the user of a treatment planning system to check the calculation algorithm's ability to model the build up effect beyond an air/tissue interface. The expected result is expressed as an inhomogeneity correction factor CF derived from measurements and from Monte Carlo calculations for a full range of photon beam qualities. The linear regression lines obtained from plotting CF as a function of beam quality index form the basis for a quantitative check of the algorithm performance.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to establish, by means of peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) at the distal radius, the existence of cortical and/or trabecular osteopenia, and to assess the integrity of bone geometry in uremic patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. Our results show a clearcut selective reduction in volumetric cortical density, more evident in women (p=–0.0001) than men (p= 0.030), which appears to be independent of age and menopausal status. Trabecular density was not significantly changed in either sex. Cortical density of the patients correlated inversely with age (p = 0.003), duration of dialysis (p= 0.002) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels (p= 0.03). Trabecular density correlated only with age. Normally, cortical density is age-dependent and its reduction is accompanied by compensatory geometry changes. Compared with control subjects, in our female patients both cortical area and cortical thickness were reduced (p= 0.02 and 0.008), while cross-sectional area did not change (p= 0.67). Conversely, in the males only cross-sectional area was reduced (p= 0.02). In conclusion, in uremic patients we observed a selective cortical osteopenia, more evident in the female sex, and a sex-specific pattern of geometry impairment, with resultant apparent increased bone fragility in the uremic women. A transthoracic fine-needle aspiration biopsy, sampled under echographic guidance from a pleuro-pulmonary mass, proved to be a metastatic meningioma. The meningioma had been operated on from the left parietal lobe, twelve years previously. Cytologic specimens showed nests of round-to-spindle-shaped tumor cells with whorl formation; the cells were immunoreactive for vimentin and epithelial-membrane antigen. The cytological appearance of the tumor cells was diagnostic of meningioma. In the course of the clinical staging, a recurrent cerebral meningioma was found and was judged to be inoperable, because of extensive growth and brain infiltration.  相似文献
