Enzymatic sulfation of glycolipids by human gastric mucosa

A sulfotransferase activity which catalyzes the transfer of sulfate group from 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulfate to galactosylceramide and triglucosyl monoalkylmonoacylglycerol has been demonstrated in antral and fundic mucosa of normal human stomach. With both types of mucosa maximum activity for sulfation of galactosylceramide was obtained at pH 6.8, whereas the pH optimum for sulfation of triglucosyl monoalkylmonoacylglycerol was 7.8. The reactions were stimulated by the addition of Triton X-100, Mg2+ and F1-. The sulfotransferase activity of fundic mucosa for the synthesis of sulfated glyceroglucolipid was about two times higher than that of antral mucosa, while the enzyme activity for sulfation of glycosphingolipid was similar in both areas of the stomach.     

119. Eine neue chirurgische Technik zur funktionsgerechten analen Sphincterersatzplastik im Kindesalter

Zusammenfassung Basierend auf der Tatsache, daß ein denervierter Extremitätenmuskel durch muskuläre Neurotisation über die Beckenbodenmuskulatur reinnerviert und zu einem Tonusmuskel mit den Eigenschaften des Originalsphincters umgestaltet werden kann, wurde an unserer Klinik bisher bei 5 Kindern der Musculus gracilis denerviert und auf die Beckenbodenmuskulatur transportiert. Nachuntersuchungsergebnisse in drei Fällen zeigen die willkürlich wie auch reflektorisch den Sphincteranforderungen angepaßte Funktion.     

The pharmacokinetic profile of pentachlorophenol in monkeys

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a registered antimicrobial agent used widely for the preservation of wood. The pharmacokinetic profile of PCP has been defined in the Rhesus monkeys. Three male and three female monkeys were given a single oral dose of 10 mg/kg [¹⁴C]PCP in corn oil. Concentrations of PCP were determined in plasma and urine at selected time intervals through 360 hr post-administration. There were apparent sex-related differences in the first order clearance of PCP from plasma and excretion in urine. The half-life value for clearance of PCP from plasma was 83.5 hr for females and 72.0 hr for males while the half-life value for excretion was 92.4 and 40.8 hr for females and males, respectively. Essentially all of the ¹⁴C activity excreted in urine was PCP. Biliary excretion and enterohepatic circulation were the probable explanations for the long half-life of PCP in the body of monkeys.

Auf die Technik der Versorgung halbmondförmiger Verletzungen wird eingegangen. Das Prinzip der Z-Plastik wird beschrieben.     

Transantral maxillary neurectomy for intractable neuralgia.

A case of atypical facial pain over the distribution of the maxillary nerve (V2) has been presented as well as its treatment. The maxillary nerve section using the dissecting microscope is a relatively new procedure with potential to become an accepted treatment of intractable V2 neuralgia. A brief review of possible complications of the procedure was presented.     

Genital warts and cervical cancer. III. Subclinical papillomaviral infection and cervical neoplasia are linked by a spectrum of continuous morphologic and biologic change

Human papillomaviral (HPV) infection is now widely advanced as an important etiologic factor in cervical cancer. This study was undertaken to clarify morphologic relationships within the biologic spectrum linking subclinical papillomaviral infection (SPI) to cervical intraepithelial (CIN). Two pathologists analyzed 72 colposcopic biopsies, using a semi-objective rating scheme that scored 24 different histologic criteria. Each individual criterion was checked for reproducibility, and validated against an objective measure of papillomaviral infection (immunoperoxidase staining) or premalignant change (microspectrophotometry). The individual criteria were then combined into histologic indices of benign warty change, presumed viral atypia, abnormal cell phenotype, and disturbed tissue maturation. Histologic expression of papillomaviral infection decreased with increasing degrees of premalignant change. Plotting the index of abnormal cell phenotype against that of disturbed tissue maturation produced a linear plot in which cases clustered into four diagnostic groups. The histologic indices of papillomaviral infection displayed significant curvilinear correlations with genotypic distortion, benign warty change being maximal in the CIN 1 range and presumed viral atypia in the CIN 2 range. Disturbance of nuclear DNA content also increased with worsening diagnosis; diploidy being most common in SPI (67%), polyploidy in CIN 1 (59%), and aneuploidy in CIN 2 (65%) and CIN 3 (82%). Conversely, capsid antigen production decreased from 36% in SPI to 9% in CIN 3. Three aneuploid epithelia were immunoperoxidase positive. These inverse relationships between late viral expression and nuclear distortion fit experimental models of viral oncogenesis. The gradual transition and morphologic overlap between diagnostic groups support the postulate that SPI and CIN are a single disease spectrum, in which differences are those of degree rather than of kind.     

Surgical treatment of gastric carcinoma: complications and results]

Between 1974 and 1989 468 patients with gastric cancer were operated upon. The correlations between age, tumour staging, operability, postoperative complications, and perioperative mortality are analyzed. The further course of the disease was followed carefully in all patients. Therefore it is possible to correlated survival with tumour stage and operability.
