Fatal ventricular arrhythmia as a complication of transesophageal echocardiography.

AIM: To report a case of serious ventricular arrhythmia during transesophageal echocardiography. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 58-year-old woman with previous mitral and tricuspid valve replacement and permanent pacemaker implantation suffered from recurrent fever and Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. Transesophageal echocardiography was performed as part of the assessment for infective endocarditis. During this procedure the patient developed sustained ventricular tachycardia and subsequently ventricular flutter. She was successfully resuscitated. Subsequently the procedure was undertaken under general anesthesia with no complications. CONCLUSION: The increasing use of TEE in a wider spectrum of patients, many of whom are seriously ill, may result in serious side-effects.     

Transferability of Medication Administration Simulation Training to Clinical Settings

The study examines the impact of one-on-one simulation for medication administration (MA) on prelicensure student preparedness for and performance of MA in the clinical setting.We used a prospective quasi-experimental interventional study applying Kirkpatrick's model to the simulation experience addressing MA.Simulation increased student preparedness. Students' critical thinking and approach during the MA process were significantly higher in the clinical setting.One-on-one MA simulation is an effective educational method for improving student learning and performance in practice.

Multiple hornet stings with features of Reye's syndrome

Hornet's venom is known to possess a variety of toxic effects. A 19-mo-old girl who developed a Reye-like syndrome following multiple stings by the Oriental hornet (Vespa orientalis) is described. She presented with encephalopathy associated with hepatomegaly, elevated transaminase levels, low prothrombin time, and hyperammonemia. Liver biopsy demonstrated microvesicular fatty infiltration and diffuse mitochondrial changes. Additional features were acute renal tubular necrosis and massive hemolysis.

Effects of short-term awareness interventions on children's attitudes toward peers with a disability

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of two awareness activities on children's attitudes towards peers with a disability. The Children's Attitudes towards Peers with Disability scale including cognitive, behavioral and emotional subscales was administered before and after two types of short-term interventions. The first included 75 children from grades 7-9, who actively participated in the workshop simulating movement activities. The second intervention included 121 students of the 10th grade, who observed their peers participating in a wheelchair-basketball activity together with elite wheelchair-basketball players. Results indicated significant effects in the cognitive and behavioral domains. Post-test findings confirmed that intervention bridged the difference in the cognitive domain observed between those with and without previous contact at pretest.
