Despite the fact that cestodes represent major etiological agents of both human and domestic animal diseases, little is known
about the molecular aspects of cestode development. In this work, Mesocestoides corti, a model cestode species, was studied from the early development of its larval form (tetrathyridium) into adult worms (strobilation)
using different proteomic approaches. The protein profiles of M. corti tetrathyridia induced or not induced to undergo strobilation were compared. Proteomic mapping by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis
showed the resolution of 248 and 154 spots from tetrathyridia that were subjected or not subjected to strobilation induction,
respectively, allowing for the detection of at least nine spots exclusive to each group. Spot analysis by matrix-assisted
laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) or MALDI-TOF MS/MS identified four reference
proteins (six spots). LC-MS/MS analyses of protein extracts identified 66 proteins, eight of which were found exclusively
in non-induced tetrathyridia, while 13 were found exclusively in strobilation-induced tetrathyridia. Among the proteins exclusively
identified in strobilation-induced worms, there was a predominance of proteins with functions relating to chaperone activity
and protein synthesis and turnover. Quantitative differential expression analysis between M. corti tetrathyridia prior to and after strobilation induction revealed six proteins upregulated in strobilation-induced worms;
these proteins were involved in metabolic pathways, cell proliferation, and cytoskeletal rearrangement. Overall, despite the
absence of a sequenced M. corti genome, using sequences from other platyhelminthes, we were able to establish comprehensive protein profiles for tetrathyridia
prior to and after strobilation induction and identify several proteins potentially involved in the early events leading to

The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of neonatal and pediatric intensive care units (ICU) and beds in Rio de Janeiro, correlating with population demands in 1997 and 2007. All neonatal and pediatric ICUs were visited, identifying the availability and type of beds. Comparisons were made between: supply and demand using projected need for beds for the population; public and private ICUs; and geographical regions. In 2007, 95 units were included totaling 1,094 beds (74 units and 1,080 beds in 1997): 51% public and 48% private (47% and 52% in 1997); 47% neonatal, 18% pediatric and 35% mixed units. Most units were located in the metropolitan area. The distribution of public and private beds was similar in the metropolitan area in both periods; in the interior, public beds tripled. Access has improved, mainly in the interior, but there is still no equity in the distribution of and accessibility to the available beds, with a shortage in the public sector, an excess in the private sector, and a great concentration in the metropolitan area. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: Glucocorticoids are the main drug used to control vasogenic edema in patients with brain tumor. Rapid GC tapering may not only decompensate intracranial pressure, but also unmask SAI, and some symptoms of SAI can be mistakenly attributable to increased intracranial pressure or side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. METHODS: The University of Virginia Neuro-Oncology Database was reviewed from February 2002 to January 2006, and 5 neuro-oncology patients with clinical and laboratory evidence of SAI were identified. RESULTS: In our experience, 1% of neuro-oncology patients treated with GC developed SAI. Symptoms resembled increased intracranial pressure or side effects of antineoplastic treatment. CONCLUSION: A healthy index of suspicion for this complication and use of pharmacologic testing will help avert misattribution of symptoms of SAI and its deleterious consequences. 相似文献

On the basis of our recent findings that 6-aminoquinolones inhibit the HIV Tat-mediated transactivation, we have designed a broad series of derivatives identifying novel potent agents such as the 6-desfluoroquinolones 24 (HM12) and 27 (HM13), which showed pronounced anti-HIV activity in acutely, chronically, and latently HIV-1 infected cell cultures. Candida infections account for 80% of all fungal infections in the hospital environment, including bloodstream, urinary tract and surgical site infections. Bloodstream infections are now a major challenge for tertiary hospitals worldwide due to their high prevalence and mortality rates. The incidence of candidemia in tertiary public hospitals in Brazil is approximately 2.5 cases per 1000 hospital admissions. Due to the importance of this infection, the authors provide a review of the diversity of the genus Candida and its clinical relevance, the therapeutic options and discuss the treatment of major infections caused by Candida. Each topography is discussed with regard to epidemiological, clinical and laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations based on levels of evidence. 相似文献
