Should nurses be studying bioscience? A discussion paper

The growth of bioscience knowledge over the last two decades has increased the potential benefits of scientifically based patient care by contributing to the theory of clinical care. However, there is little evidence that knowledge, derived from the human biosciences is being fully incorporated into nursing theory and practice.Nursing has developed its own unique professional body of knowledge, heavily influenced by behavioural science. If nursing theory leans towards behavioural science, but practice is devoted to problems of biological disturbance, nursing may be facing a widening theory-practice gap, greater than other professions. The theory-practice gap in nursing may be widened by the exclusion of bioscience from nursing theory. Nurses' relative disinterest in the natural sciences can be attributed both to sociological reasons and to problems stemming from the symbol-object dichotomy that recur in the teaching of natural sciences. Reflection on practice and examination of education method are suggested as strategies for re-introducing bioscience into nursing theory and practice. A challenge facing nurse educators is the integration of biological science into the nurses' conceptual ecologies. For, if nursing fails to make bioscience its own, much of the clinical welfare of patients will become a medical monopoly.     

胶态果胶铋对实验性大鼠急性胃炎及兔慢性胃炎疗效的观察

果胶铋是一种新型的铋制剂，实验发现：０．５ｇ／ｋｇ／ｄ果胶铋灌胃大鼠能够明显减轻由ＨＣＩ引起的急性胃炎胃粘膜的病变程度；同时还发现，０．２５／ｋｇ／ｄ果胶铋灌胃家兔对兔实验性变态反应性胃炎有明显的治疗作用，能显著减小病变面积，减轻或消除胃粘膜炎症，且未见溃疡发生。其疗效与得乐疗效相比无显著性差异。     

A review of 43 cases of tetanus neonatorum.

Forty-three patients with neonatal tetanus admitted to the Infectious Diseases Ward of the Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine Children's Hospital at Capa from 1982-1989 are presented. Thirty-two (74.4%) of the subjects were boys. The overall mortality was found to be 60 percent and the mean incubation period 6.1 +/- 20 days. The mean period between onset of symptoms and hospital admission was 1.7 days. Thirty-nine (90.7%) of the 43 patients were unhygienic home deliveries and only two cases were delivered with a midwife in attendance. None of the mothers of the children in our series had been immunized with tetanus toxoid. The incidence of neonatal tetanus in Turkey is on the decline, but a fraction of the population, the so-called urban poor, is still at high risk for preventable diseases. Every contact an unvaccinated person has with a health care professional should be viewed as an opportunity for tetanus immunization.     

Polyester film strips coated with photographic gelatin containing immobilized glucose oxidase hardened by chromium(III) sulphate.

Glucose oxidase was immobilized into photographic gelatin hardened by chromium(III) sulphate. The enzyme-gelatin mixture was coated on polyester film strips which allowed easy and simple handling during assays. The effect of gelatin and cross-linker concentrations on water content and enzymatic activity was studied. The effect of pH during immobilization and that of incubation temperature on maximum activity were examined. Enzyme leakage tests were carried out during reuse number studies. Consecutive use of strips followed by washing and resting between uses were found to affect the reuse number. A maximum immobilization of 68% was reached under optimal conditions. Mechanical stability and leakage were found to be functions of gelatin and cross-linker concentrations. Photographic gelatin was found to have many capabilities with extraordinary characteristics as a carrier on immobilization.     

Delay of cranial bone regeneration by CO2 and Nd-YAG laser application: an experimental study related to craniosynostosis

In this study we have investigated the negative influence of CO₂ and Nd-YAG laser irradiation on rapid cranial regeneration and whether it has any use in certain types of craniosynostosis. Twenty-two newborn rats were used in the study. Both CO₂ and Nd-YAG laser irradiation, which was applied to free bony edges after, suturectomies, resulted in a significant decrease in skull regeneration. Histopathological examinations revealed severe degeneration caused by both types of laser energies.     

Vaginal cones: a conservative method of treating genuine stress incontinence

Summary. A set of weighted vaginal cones designed to exercise the pelvic floor muscles was used by a group of 39 premenopausal patients with genuine stress incontinence who were awaiting corrective surgery. The effectiveness of the exercises in reducing urinary loss was assessed with a standard urine pad test before and after 1 month of training. Of the 30 women who completed 1 month of the exercises 70% felt they were improved or cured and 90% found it an acceptable method of treatment. Of the 30 women only 11 (37%) opted for surgery after training. There was a highly significant correlation (P<0·001, r_s= -0·21) between decreased urine loss and increase in retained cone weight.
