Objective

To design and test an embedded biomedical sensor system that can monitor astronauts’ comprehensive physiological parameters, and provide real-time data display during extra-vehicle activities (EVA) in the space exploration.

Methods

An embedded system was developed with an array of biomedical sensors that can be integrated into the spacesuit. Wired communications were tested for physiological data acquisition and data transmission to a computer mounted on the spacesuit during task performances simulating EVA sessions.

Results

The sensor integration, data collection and communication, and the real-time data monitoring were successfully validated in the NASA field tests.

Conclusions

The developed system may work as an embedded system for monitoring health status during long-term space mission.  相似文献

Studies have associated secondhand smoking (SHS) with cancers of the lung, larynx, and pharynx. Only a few studies have examined the association between SHS and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and the findings are inconclusive. We aimed to investigate the association between SHS and risk of ESCC in a case-control study in Kashmir, where the incidence of ESCC is high.We recruited 703 histopathologically confirmed ESCC cases and 1664 hospital-based controls individually matched to the cases for age, sex, and district of residence. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated using conditional logistic regression models.Among never-tobacco users, the ORs for the association between SHS and ESCC risk were above unity with ever exposure to SHS (OR = 1.32; 95% CI, 0.43–4.02) and exposure to SHS for >14 h/wk (median value) (OR = 2.69; 95% CI, 0.75–20.65). In the analysis of data from all participants, the OR (95% CI) for the association between SHS and ESCC was (OR = 1.02; 95% CI, 0.53–1.93) for SHS ≤14 h/wk and (OR = 1.91; 95% CI, 0.75–4.89) for SHS >14 h/wk in the models adjusted for tobacco use and several other potential confounding factors.We found an indication of increased risk of ESCC associated with exposure to SHS. Studies with larger numbers of SHS-exposed never tobacco users are required to further examine this association.  相似文献

Microscopic entities, microorganisms that drastically affect human health need to be thoroughly investigated. A biofilm is an architectural colony of microorganisms, within a matrix of extracellular polymeric substance that they produce. Biofilm contains microbial cells adherent to one-another and to a static surface (living or non-living). Bacterial biofilms are usually pathogenic in nature and can cause nosocomial infections. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) revealed that among all microbial and chronic infections, 65% and 80%, respectively, are associated with biofilm formation. The process of biofilm formation consists of many steps, starting with attachment to a living or non-living surface that will lead to formation of micro-colony, giving rise to three-dimensional structures and ending up, after maturation, with detachment. During formation of biofilm several species of bacteria communicate with one another, employing quorum sensing. In general, bacterial biofilms show resistance against human immune system, as well as against antibiotics. Health related concerns speak loud due to the biofilm potential to cause diseases, utilizing both device-related and non-device-related infections. In summary, the understanding of bacterial biofilm is important to manage and/or to eradicate biofilm-related diseases. The current review is, therefore, an effort to encompass the current concepts in biofilm formation and its implications in human health and disease.  相似文献

In the development of artificial cancellous bones, two major factors need to be considered: the integrity of the overall structure and its permeability. Whilst there have been many studies analysing the mechanical properties of artificial and natural cancellous bones, permeability studies, especially those using numerical simulation, are scarce. In this study, idealised cancellous bones were simulated from the morphological indices of natural cancellous bone. Three different orientations were also simulated to compare the anisotropic nature of the structure. Computational fluid dynamics methods were used to analyse fluid flow through the cancellous structures. A constant mass flow rate was used to determine the intrinsic permeability of the virtual specimens. The results showed similar permeability of the prismatic plate-and-rod model to the natural cancellous bone. The tetrakaidecahedral rod model had the highest permeability under simulated blood flow conditions, but the plate counterpart had the lowest. Analyses on the anisotropy of the virtual specimens showed the highest permeability for the horizontal orientation. Linear relationships were found between permeability and the two physical properties, porosity and bone surface area.  相似文献

Glycyrrhizic acid (GA), a natural triterpene, has received attention as an agent that has protective effects against chronic diseases including ultraviolet UV‐B‐induced skin photodamage. However, the mechanism of its protective effect remains elusive. Here, we used an immortalized human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) and a small animal model (BALB/c mice), to investigate the protective effects of GA against UV‐B‐induced oxidative damage, and additionally, delineated the molecular mechanisms involved in the UV‐B‐mediated inflammatory and apoptotic response. In the HaCaT cells, GA inhibited the UV‐B‐mediated increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and down‐regulated the release of pro‐inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)‐1α, ‐1β and ‐6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). GA inhibited UV‐B‐mediated activation of p38 and JNK MAP kinases, COX‐2 expression and nuclear translocation of NF‐κB. Furthermore, GA inhibited UV‐B‐mediated apoptosis by attenuating translocation of Bax from the cytosol to mitochondria, thus preserving mitochondrial integrity. GA‐treated HaCaT cells also exhibited elevated antiapoptotic Bcl‐2 protein, concomitant with reduced caspase‐3 cleavage and decreased PARP‐1 protein. In BALB/c mice, topical application of GA on dorsal skin exposed to UV‐B irradiation protected against epidermal hyperplasia, lymphocyte infiltration and expression of several inflammatory proteins, p38, JNK, COX‐2, NF‐κB and ICAM‐1. Based on the above findings, we conclude that GA protects against UV‐B‐mediated photodamage by inhibiting the signalling cascades triggered by oxidative stress, including MAPK/NF‐κB activation, as well as apoptosis. Thus, GA has strong potential to be used as a therapeutic/cosmeceutical agent against photodamage.  相似文献
