Echo-train STIR MRI of the liver: comparison of breath-hold and non-breath-hold imaging strategies 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The purpose of this study was to evaluate echo-train short inversion-time inversion recovery (STIR) sequences and compare the results obtained with breath-hold and non-breath-hold imaging strategies. Forty-one patients referred for hepatic magnetic resonance were imaged with both a breath-hold STIR (BH-STIR; acquisition time [TA] 16-20 seconds x 2) and a non-breath-hold STIR (NBH-STIR; TA 210-256 seconds). Quantitative analysis of the liver, spleen, and up to five hepatic lesions per patient was performed. Three blinded readers recorded the number of focal lesions depicted by each study and qualitatively evaluated overall image quality, lesion conspicuity, and image artifacts. The BH-STIR had greater sensitivity (98.8% vs. 91.6%) for detection of hepatic lesions than the NBH-STIR. The BH-STIR was statistically superior in four measures of image quality and had fewer image artifacts. The NBH-STIR images had statistically higher signal-to-noise (S/N, P < 0.001) and liver-lesion contrast-to-noise (C/N, P = 0.005) ratios. For the evaluation of focal hepatic lesions, a breath-hold echo-train STIR sequence provided superior overall image quality and allowed for detection of more lesions in a shorter amount of time than a non-breath-hold echo-train STIR sequence. 相似文献

Treatment of glaucoma continues to be directed at lowering intraocular pressure to decrease the likelihood of disease progression. In the future intraocular pressure reduction might be augmented by other therapeutic approaches. Interest has been increasing in preventing progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy using approaches based on the premise that glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease. Neuroprotection of the glaucomatous optic nerve therefore would be an adjuctive therapeutic paradigm for use with conventional intraocular pressure-lowering treatments or by itself. 相似文献

Ionizing radiation is a carcinogen that induces oxidative DNA damage. 8-
Hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is a relatively abundant, mutagenic
lesion that is widely regarded as a reliable index of oxidative DNA damage.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of X- radiation on
levels of 8-OHdG in the context of an experimental model for breast cancer
in which chronic radiation exposure has been shown to be carcinogenic in
Sprague-Dawley rats. A secondary objective of this study was to determine
if the use of phenol during DNA isolation affected the concentration of
8-OHdG subsequently measured. Our results indicate that a profoundly
carcinogenic dose of radiation induced a small but significant increase in
8-OHdG concentration in mammary gland DNA, and that the use of a
phenol-based versus a salt-based method of DNA isolation had no significant
impact on the levels of 8-OHdG detected in either control or irradiated
tissue.

The variation in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence worldwide strongly
suggests a role for dietary influences. Based on epidemiological data,
protective effects of vegetables and fruit intake on CRC are widely
claimed, while other data indicate a possible increased CRC risk from
(higher) dietary fat intake. Therefore, we have investigated single and
interactive effects of dietary fat and a vegetable-fruit mixture (VFM) in
the ApcMin mouse, a mouse model for multiple intestinal neoplasia. In this
study, four different diets (A-D) were compared, which were either low in
fat (20% energy diets A/B) or high in fat (40% energy diets C/D). In
addition, 19.5% (wt/wt) of the carbohydrates in diets B and D were replaced
by a freeze-dried VFM. The diets were balanced so that they only differed
among each other in fat/carbohydrate content and the presence of specific
plant-constituents. Because the initiation of intestinal tumors in ApcMin
mice occurs relatively early in life, exposure to the diets was started in
utero. Without the addition of VFM, mice maintained at a high-fat diet did
not develop significantly higher numbers of small or large intestinal
adenomas than mice maintained at a low-fat diet. VFM added to a low-fat
diet significantly lowered multiplicity of small intestinal polyps (from
16.2 to 10.2/mouse, 15 animals/group), but not of colon tumors in male
ApcMin mice only. Strikingly, addition of VFM to female mice maintained on
a low-fat diet and to both sexes maintained on a high-fat diet
significantly enhanced intestinal polyp multiplicity (from 16.5 to 26.7
polyps/mouse). In conclusion, our results indicate that neither a lower fat
intake nor consumption of VFM included in a high-fat diet decreases the
development of polyps in mice genetically predisposed to intestinal tumor
development.

The efficacy of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for detecting and characterizing, or excluding, hepatic masses was assessed in 404 patients, following the intravenous administration of mangafodipir trisodium (MnDPDP) injection, a hepatic MRI contrast agent. An initial contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) examination was followed by unenhanced MRI, injection of MnDPDP (5 micromol/kg IV), and enhanced MRI at 15 minutes post injection. Agreement of the radiologic diagnoses with the patients' final diagnoses was higher for enhanced MRI and for the combined unenhanced and enhanced MRI evaluations than for unenhanced MRI alone or enhanced CT using the clinical diagnosis as the gold standard. Mangafodipir-enhanced MRI uniquely provided additional diagnostic information in 48% of the patients, and patient management was consequently altered in 6% of the patients. MnDPDP-enhanced MRI was comparable or superior to unenhanced MRI and enhanced CT for the detection, classification, and diagnosis of focal liver lesions in patients with known or suspected focal liver disease. 相似文献

The short-term safety of mangafodipir trisodium (MnDPDP) injection was studied in 546 adults with known or suspected focal liver lesions. An initial contrast-enhanced computed tomography examination was followed by unenhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), injection of MnDPDP (5 micromol/kg), and enhanced MRI. Adverse events were reported for 23% of the patients; most were mild to moderate in intensity, did not require treatment, and were not drug related. The most commonly reported adverse events were nausea (7%) and headache (4%). The incidence of serious adverse events was low (nine events in six patients) and not drug related. Injection-associated discomfort was reported for 69% of the patients, and the most commonly reported discomforts included heat (49%) and flushing (33%). Changes in laboratory values and vital signs were generally transient, were not clinically significant, and did not require treatment. There were no clinically significant short-term risks from exposure to MnDPDP. 相似文献

A 50-year-old man presented with uncontrolled erythroclastic glaucoma and recurrent vitreous hemorrhage from a previously irradiated choroidal melanoma. Despite trabeculectomy, intraocular pressure became uncontrolled due to increasing bleeding from the melanoma. The vitreous hemorrhage became voluminous and could not be stopped with multiple vitrectomies with endolaser, transpupillary thermotherapy, and transscleral laser. Endoresection of the regressed tumor and its bleeding vasculature resulted in immediate cessation of the bleeding and control of the intraocular pressure. 相似文献
