Adolescence is a nutritionally vulnerable and critical life stage. However, few programs and policies focus on improving adolescent nutrition in Indonesia. To address this gap, we implemented a gender-responsive package of interventions: (1) breakfast and weekly iron-folic acid supplementation (WIFS), (2) a school-based nutrition education program, and (3) a social behavior change communication strategy. We surveyed 514 adolescents at baseline (2019) and endline (2020) in Klaten and Lombok Barat districts in Indonesia. The survey included a knowledge assessment on nutrition, as well as indicators of attitudes and behaviors on diet, physical activity, and WIFS. We employed multivariable linear and logistic regression to test for pre–post intervention differences. Overall knowledge was significantly higher post-intervention (: 3.3; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.6, 3.9). Diet diversity was high at both timepoints, however, at post-intervention there was significantly higher odds of consuming vitamin A-rich fruits and vegetables (Odds Ratio [OR]: 1.5; 95% CI: 1.1, 2.0) and lower odds of consuming sugar-sweetened beverages (OR: 0.4; 95% CI: 0.3, 0.5). Post-intervention, there was higher odds of reporting 60 min of daily physical activity (OR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.7, 3.2) and WIFS among girls (OR: 6.7; 95% CI: 1.5, 30.9). The package of interventions may be a promising first step to improving adolescent nutrition in Indonesia. 相似文献

Recently, CEN/TS 17626:2021, the European pre-analytical standard for human specimens intended for microbiome DNA analysis, was published. Although this standard relates to diagnostic procedures for microbiome analysis and is relevant for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) manufacturers and diagnostic laboratories, it also has implications for research and development (R&D). We present here why standards are needed in biomedical research, what pre-analytical standards can accomplish, and which elements of the pre-analytical workflow they cover. Development of accurate therapeutic approaches to salivary gland neoplasms depends on better understanding of their molecular pathogenesis. Tumour growth is regulated by the balance between proliferation and apoptosis. Few studies have investigated apoptosis in salivary tumours relying almost exclusively on immunohistochemistry or TUNEL assay. Furthermore, there is no information regarding the mRNA expression profile of apoptotic genes in salivary tumors. Successful and sustained efforts have been made to curtail the major cholera epidemic that occurred in Haiti in 2010 with the promotion of hygiene and sanitation measures, training of health personnel and establishment of treatment centers nationwide. Oral cholera vaccine (OCV) was introduced by the Haitian Ministry of Health as a pilot project in urban and rural areas. This paper reports the successful OCV pilot project led by GHESKIO Centers in the urban slums of Port-au-Prince where 52,357 persons received dose 1 and 90.8% received dose 2; estimated coverage of the at-risk community was 75%. This pilot study demonstrated the effort, community mobilization, and organizational capacity necessary to achieve these results in a challenging setting. The OCV intervention paved the way for the recent launching of a national cholera vaccination program integrated in a long-term ambitious and comprehensive plan to address Haiti''s critical need in water security and sanitation. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE
The response of ventromedial hypothalamic (VMH) glucose-inhibited neurons to decreased glucose is impaired under conditions where the counterregulatory response (CRR) to hypoglycemia is impaired (e.g., recurrent hypoglycemia). This suggests a role for glucose-inhibited neurons in the CRR. We recently showed that decreased glucose increases nitric oxide (NO) production in cultured VMH glucose-inhibited neurons. These in vitro data led us to hypothesize that NO release from VMH glucose-inhibited neurons is critical for the CRR.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS
The CRR was evaluated in rats and mice in response to acute insulin-induced hypoglycemia and hypoglycemic clamps after modulation of brain NO signaling. The glucose sensitivity of ventromedial nucleus glucose-inhibited neurons was also assessed.RESULTS
Hypoglycemia increased hypothalamic constitutive NO synthase (NOS) activity and neuronal NOS (nNOS) but not endothelial NOS (eNOS) phosphorylation in rats. Intracerebroventricular and VMH injection of the nonselective NOS inhibitor NG-monomethyl-l-arginine (l-NMMA) slowed the recovery to euglycemia after hypoglycemia. VMH l-NMMA injection also increased the glucose infusion rate (GIR) and decreased epinephrine secretion during hyperinsulinemic/hypoglycemic clamp in rats. The GIR required to maintain the hypoglycemic plateau was higher in nNOS knockout than wild-type or eNOS knockout mice. Finally, VMH glucose-inhibited neurons were virtually absent in nNOS knockout mice.CONCLUSIONS
We conclude that VMH NO production is necessary for glucose sensing in glucose-inhibited neurons and full generation of the CRR to hypoglycemia. These data suggest that potentiating NO signaling may improve the defective CRR resulting from recurrent hypoglycemia in patients using intensive insulin therapy.Intensive insulin therapy significantly reduces the onset and progression of hyperglycemia-related complications in patients with type 1 and advanced type 2 diabetes. However, intensive insulin therapy also causes a clinically adverse effect: hypoglycemia (1). Powerful neuroendocrine and autonomic counterregulatory mechanisms protect the brain from hypoglycemia (2,3). These protective mechanisms, known as the counterregulatory response (CRR) to hypoglycemia, involve the release of hormones (e.g., glucagon, epinephrine) that restore euglycemia by stimulating hepatic glucose production and inhibiting peripheral glucose uptake (3). Although the physiology of the CRR is well understood, the underlying cellular mechanisms by which the brain senses hypoglycemia and initiates the CRR remain elusive.During hypoglycemia, central and peripheral glucose sensors detect declining glucose levels (4). In the brain, the ventromedial hypothalamus, which includes the arcuate nucleus and the ventromedial nucleus (VMN), is important in the initiation of the CRR (5–7). This region contains specialized glucose-sensing neurons (GSNs). Ventromedial hypothalamic (VMH) GSN electrical activity is regulated by physiologically relevant changes in extracellular glucose levels (8–11). Glucose-excited neurons decrease, whereas glucose-inhibited neurons increase, their input resistance, membrane potential, and action potential frequency when extracellular glucose is reduced (10). Many studies suggest that VMH glucose-inhibited neurons play a critical role in the control of the CRR (4). For example, the response of VMH glucose-inhibited neurons to decreased glucose is impaired under conditions where the CRR is impaired (e.g., recurrent hypoglycemia) (12,13).Nitric oxide (NO) is a gaseous messenger produced by NO synthase (NOS). Two classes of NOS have been identified in the brain: the inducible NOS (iNOS) and the constitutive NOS, which includes the neuronal NOS (nNOS) and endothelial NOS (eNOS) isoforms (14). Hypothalamic NO is involved in the regulation of food intake and glucose homeostasis (15–18). In support of this, we have recently shown that VMH glucose-inhibited neurons produce NO via nNOS in response to decreased extracellular glucose levels (19,20). Therefore, in this study, we test the hypothesis that NO production by VMH glucose-inhibited neurons is necessary for the CRR to hypoglycemia. Although combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been documented for military combatants, little is known about PTSD in noncombatants. Active-duty U.S. Air Force noncombatants (N = 5,367) completed a Post-Deployment Health Assessment upon return from combat zones in Iraq (n = 4,408) or a noncombat zone in Qatar (n = 959). Those deployed to Iraq were significantly more likely to report exposure to someone who was wounded or killed (20.8% vs. 6.3%), feeling in great danger of being killed at some point during deployment (18.9% vs. 3.5%), symptoms of PTSD (4.1% vs. 0.7%), and symptoms of major depression (9.9% vs. 5.4%). TGF-β in the tibialis anterior muscle of rats following cryoinjury. Muscle regeneration involves cell proliferation, migration
and differentiation and is regulated by growth factors and cytokines. A growing body of evidence suggests that LLLT promotes
skeletal muscle regeneration by reducing the duration of acute inflammation and accelerating tissue repair. Adult male Wistar
rats (n = 35) were randomly divided into three groups: control group (no lesion, untreated, n = 5), cryoinjury without LLLT group (n = 15), and cryoinjury with LLLT group (n = 15). The injured region was irradiated three times a week using an AlGaInP laser (660 nm; beam spot 0.04 cm2, output power 20 mW, power density 500 mW/cm2, energy density 5 J/cm2, exposure time 10 s). Muscle remodeling was evaluated at 1, 7 and 14 days (long-term) following injury. The muscles were
removed and total RNA was isolated using TRIzol reagent and cDNA synthesis. Real-time polymerase chain reactions were performed

Listeria monocytogenes (LM) is one of the rare microorganisms causing peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. We report a sporadic case of peritonitis caused by LM in a young female PD patient with lupus receiving corticosteroid therapy, who presented with abdominal pain, cloudy PD effluent, nausea, and conjunctivitis. The effluent showed a high PD effluent white cell count and monocytosis, and gram staining showed gram-positive bacilli in single or short chains and PD effluent culture grew LM. She was treated successfully with beta lactum antibiotics. LM peritonitis should be suspected if a patient presents with gram-positive bacilli and monocytosis in dialysis effluent. 相似文献
