A study was conducted in Simla town to know the effectiveness and reactions of measles vaccine. One hundred and eight children in the age group of 9–23 months were immunized with measles vaccine and followed over a period of 2 years. Eighty nine children were also followed up as controls. The difference in the attack rate of measles in these two groups was highly significant. Mild fever was found to be a significant side effect. No other reaction like rash or convulsions was observed.  相似文献

The dentate gyrus region retains the ability to generate neurons throughout adulthood. A few studies have examined the neurotransmitter regulation of adult hippocampal neurogenesis and have shown that this process is regulated by serotonin and glutamate. Given the strong noradrenergic innervation of the adult hippocampus and the ability of norepinephrine to influence proliferation during development, we examined the influence of norepinephrine on adult hippocampal neurogenesis. Our study indicates that depletion of norepinephrine by the selective noradrenergic neurotoxin, N-(2-chloroethyl)-N-ethyl-2-bromo benzylamine hydrochloride (DSP-4), results in a 63% reduction in the proliferation of dentate gyrus progenitor cells identified through 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) labelling. In contrast, the survival of BrdU-positive cells labelled prior to treatment with DSP-4 is not influenced by norepinephrine depletion. The differentiation of BrdU labelled progenitors into neurons or glia was also not sensitive to noradrenergic depletion. These results indicate that the proliferation, but not the survival or differentiation, of adult hippocampal granule cell progenitors is affected by norepinephrine depletion.  相似文献

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine whether neural pathways used to encode pictures into memory were re-activated during retrieval of those memories. At encoding, subjects semantically classified common objects presented as pictures or words. At retrieval, subjects performed yes/no recognition memory judgments on words that had been encoded as pictures or as words. The retrieval test probed memory for the encoded item, but not memory for the modality of the encoded item (picture/word). Results revealed that a subset of the brain regions involved specifically in encoding of pictures were also engaged during recognition memory for the encoded pictures. Specifically, encoding of pictures relative to words engaged bilateral extrastriate visual cortex, namely fusiform, lingual, middle occipital, and inferior temporal gyri (Broadman area (BA) 18/19/37). Recognition memory judgments about words that were encoded as pictures relative to those that were encoded as words activated fusiform and inferior temporal gyri primarily in the left hemisphere. Thus, cortical areas originally involved in perception of a visual experience become part of the long-term memory trace for that experience. These findings suggest a neural basis for encoding specificity and transfer appropriate processing in human memory.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a training program using standardized parents (SPs) to improve the performance of pediatric intensive care fellows in communicating bad news to parents. DESIGN: Self-controlled crossover design. SETTING: Tertiary pediatric intensive care unit in a university-affiliated children's hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Seven pediatric intensive care fellows and 4 trained volunteers (2 sets of SPs) participated in the study. METHODS: Two case scenarios of children admitted to the intensive care unit with a near-fatal diagnosis were used for the fellow's interactions with the SPs. The SPs had received 15 hours of training in role playing, performance evaluation, and giving feedback to the physicians. At the end of the first session, SPs provided feedback to the physicians under each of the 5 following categories: communication skills, content issues, support systems, interventions, and parent perceptions. During the second session, the parent meeting was repeated with a new but similar case scenario and a different set of SPs. Both sessions were videotaped, and a rater blinded to the order of the sessions used a weighted scale based on a checklist to score changes in physician performance. RESULTS: The performance by the fellows showed a significant mean (+/-SEM) improvement in scores of 18.1 (+/-5.2) points (P = .007) between the first and the second sessions. Ranking of session scores revealed that physician performance improved significantly during the second session (Wilcoxon signed rank test, P = .002). CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge this is the first study that demonstrates short-term improvement in physician performance in conveying bad news in a pediatric intensive care setting using SPs in a 1-day workshop.  相似文献
