Lateral hypothalamic injection of bombesin decreases food intake in rats

BULL. 8(6)617–621, 1982.—The effect of lateral hypothalamic injections of bombesin on feeding behavior was examined. Rats equipped with stainless steel cannulas directed toward the lateral hypothalamus received bilateral injections of bombesin prior to access to a liquid test diet after a 3 hr food deprivation. Bombesin in doses of 5 ng, 50 ng and 100 ng produced significant reductions in the size of the first meal. Injection of 50 ng of the biologically weak analogue [D-Trp⁸] bombesin had no effect. Injection of 5 ng or 50 ng of bombesin had no effect on deprivation-induced water intake, and injection of 50 ng of bombesin had no effect on body temperature. The food and water intake data and direct quantitative behavioral measures indicated that lateral hypothalamic injections of bombesin specifically reduced food intake. The structure-activity relationship for this effect was similar to those for other actions of bombesin. A bombesin-like peptide in the lateral hypothalamus or its receptors may play a role in postprandial satiety.     

Perihepatitis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus: computed tomography findings

The imaging findings of a 29-year-old woman with known systemic lupus erythematosus, and a clinical presentation and CT appearances consistent with perihepatitis are presented.     

Magnitude and impact of treatment delays on weeknights and weekends in patients undergoing primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction (the cadillac trial)

In 2,082 patients in the CADILLAC trial, the outcomes of patients presenting during peak hours were compared with those presenting during peak hours (Monday to Friday 8a.m. to 8 p.m., n = 1,047, 51%) were compared with those of patients presenting during off-peak hours (weeknights from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. and weekends, n = 989, 49%). Although treatment times to percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were delayed approximately 21 minutes, in patients with acute myocardial infarctions occurring on weeknights and weekends, this modest delay did not adversely affect procedural success, myocardial recovery, or survival after PCI.     

Isolated intrapetrous carotid canal atraumatic internal carotid artery dissection: MRI and digital subtraction angiography findings

A case of spontaneous internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection confined to the intrapetrous carotid canal that was confirmed by angiography and magnetic resonance imaging is presented. Isolated dissection involving the intrapetrous ICA is rare; however, whenever arterial dissection is a consideration, specific review of imaging in this region is warranted.     

Anomalous communication of external carotid and vertebral arteries with associated intracranial parenchymal arteriovenous malformation: magnetic resonance angiography and angiographic findings

A case of anomalous communication of the external carotid and vertebral arteries via a pro-atlantal intersegmental artery (PIA) with an associated intracranial parenchymal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is presented. The course of the PIA is displayed by both conventional catheter angiography and by MR angiography (MRA). To our knowledge, neither an associated intracranial parenchymal AVM nor depiction of this congenital anomaly on MRA has been previously described. We also briefly review the embryology and anatomy of this anomaly.
