Two case reports of femoral bone lesions simulating lumbar spinal disease are presented. Physical examination and case history were strongly suggestive of lumbar spinal pathology. In case 1, surgical resection of a venous hemangioma in the lumbar epidural space was performed but did not relieve pain. In case 2, conservative treatments for a protruded disk were performed for 3 months before an accurate diagnosis was made. After correct diagnoses were made, excision of the femoral tumors brought rapid relief of all abnormal findings in both cases. Compared with other causes of sciatica, femoral bone tumors are rare. However, careful attention should be paid to rule out these lesions if the diagnosis of a lumbar spinal disease is uncertain. Bone scintigraphy seems to be a sensitive diagnostic method to detect extraspinal osseous lesions.  相似文献

Induction of antitumor immunity to T-9 rat glioma by intracellular hyperthermia using functional magnetic particles was investigated. Magnetite cationic liposomes (MCLs), which have a positive surface charge, were used as heating mediators for intracellular hyperthermia. Solid T-9 glioma tissues were formed subcutaneously on both femurs of female F344 rats, and MCLs were injected via a needle only into the left solid tumors (treatment side). The rats were then divided into two groups, which received no irradiation, or irradiation for 30 min given three times at 24-h intervals with an alternating magnetic field (118 kHz, 384 Oe). On the treatment side, the tumor tissue disappeared completely in many rats exposed to the magnetic field. The tumor tissue on the opposite side also disappeared completely, even though MCLs were not injected into the right solid tumors. To examine whether a long-lasting and tumor-specific immunity could be generated, the rats that had been cured by the hyperthermia treatment were rechallenged with T-9 cells 3 months later. After a period of transient growth, all tumors disappeared. Furthermore, immuno-cytochemical assay revealed that the immune response induced by the hyperthermia treatment was mediated by both CD8+ and CD4+ T cells and accompanied by a marked augmentation of tumor-selective cytotoxic T lymphocyte activity. These results suggest that our magnetic particles are potentially effective tools for hyperthermic treatment of solid tumors, because in addition to killing of the tumor cells by heat, a host immune response is induced.  相似文献

Computed tomography scans, including thin-section high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), occasionally fail to differentiate between small non-cancerous nodules from lung cancers. We describe nine such lesions ( < 20 mm in diameter) initially identified through our screening program for lung cancer using CT scanning. Pathological diagnoses included nodular fibrosis (n = 4), granuloma (n = 1), cryptococcoma (n = 1), localised organising pneumonia (n = 1), inflammatory pseudo-tumour (n = 1) and sclerosing haemangioma (n = 1). High-resolution CT findings, together with MRI findings with contrast-enhanced dynamic studies, were retrospectively evaluated. Additional cases should be identified and radiologically characterised in order to reduce the number of non-cancerous tumours that are treated by unnecessary surgery. Subcutaneous injection of formalin into a paw of mice caused two distinct phases of licking and biting, first phase (1-5 min) and the second phase (7-30 min) after the injection. The muscarinic antagonist atropine (0.1-10 ng, i.t.) and the M(3) receptor antagonist 4-diphenylacetoxy-N-methylpiperidine methiodide (4-DAMP) (0.1-20 ng, i.t.) inhibited the second phase of this response, whereas higher doses of atropine (20-100 ng, i.t.) did not cause inhibition. The M(1) muscarinic receptor antagonist pirenzepine (10-100 ng, i.t.) did not inhibit either the first or the second phase response, but a high dose of pirenzepine (1000 ng, i.t.) tended to inhibit the second phase response. On the other hand, the M(2) muscarinic receptor antagonist 11-?(2-[(diethylamino)methyl]-1-piperidinyl?acetyl)-5, 11-dihydro-6H-pyrido(2,3-b)(1,4)benzodiazepine-6-one (AF-DX116; 10-1000 ng, i.t.) had no effect on either the first or the second phase of response. The opioid receptor antagonist naloxone did not affect the 4-DAMP-induced anti-nociceptive response. The i.t. injection of the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor neostigmine (25 ng) significantly inhibited only the second phase. The acetylcholine (ACh) depletor hemicholinium-3 (HC-3) (1 microg, i.t.) completely abolished the 4-DAMP-induced anti-nociceptive response. The ACh content of the spinal cord was significantly increased 14 min after formalin injection. This significant increase in the ACh content was inhibited by pretreatment with 4-DAMP (10 ng, i.t.). These results suggest that endogenous ACh in the spinal cord acts as a transmitter anti-nociception, and that ACh release regulated by presynaptic M(3) muscarinic receptors in the spinal cord is involved in the second phase of nociception induced by formalin.  相似文献

The median preoptic nucleus (MnPO) of the hypothalamus is involved in the osmotic control of neurohypophysial hormone release and drinking behavior. At the same time, renal sympathetic nerves exert multiple effects on renal functions such as regulating renal blood flow and urinary sodium excretion. We made the hypothesis that the MnPO may also regulate body fluid balance by exerting an influence on renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA). In this study we examined the effect of electrical stimulation of the MnPO on RSNA and the contribution of the MnPO to the change of RSNA induced by intracerebroventricular injection of hypertonic saline in the male Wistar rat. Electrical stimulation of the MnPO and the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) elicited an increase in RSNA. This increase of RSNA elicited by electrical stimulation of the MnPO was reduced by microinjections (100 nl) of 10% lidocaine or 4 mM cobaltous chloride (a synaptic transmission blocking agent) bilaterally into the PVN. Both RSNA and the mean arterial pressure (MAP) were increased by the injection of 1.5 M NaCl into the third ventricle, although heart rate (HR) was not significantly changed. These responses of RSNA and MAP were diminished by microinjection of 10% lidocaine (100 nl) into the MnPO. Our results suggest that the MnPO is involved in body fluid regulation not only by controlling vasopressin secretion and water intake but also by modulating central sympathetic outflow which regulates body fluid balance through an effect on the kidney.  相似文献

A 66-year-old man was referred to our hospital with chief complaints of difficulty in urination and terminal micturition pain. Ureteroceles were identified bilaterally, and a ureteral stone (19 x 12 mm) existed in the right ureterocele. After crushing the stone by extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), we removed the stone transurethrally with a small incision in the right ureterocele. The vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) was not detected postoperatively. Now, we recommend the combination of ESWL and a small transurethral incision of the urelerocele for the treatment of ureteral stones in a ureterocele in order to prevent postoperative VUR.  相似文献
