Meningioma presenting as an intraoral mass in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1

A 77-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 presented with ill-fitting dentures due to intraoral extension of a right temporal fossa mass. Computed tomographic scanning demonstrated that the masticator space mass bowed the zygomatic arch and remodeled the lateral orbit and maxillary sinus walls, findings that were consistent with the clinical diagnosis of a neurofibroma with possible malignant transformation. However, light microscopic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural examination of tissue from an incisional biopsy specimen were diagnostic of meningioma. This case illustrates that the clinicopathologic differential diagnosis of an enlarging mass in patient with neurofibromatosis should include sporadic, unrelated neoplasms as well as tumors known to be associated with the syndrome.     

Acetylstrophanthidin does not enhance the reflex pressor response to static muscular contraction

Summary. Cardiac glycosides have been shown to enhance the sensitivity of the reflex cardiovascular responses to stimulation of mechanoreceptors in the heart, carotid sinus and aorta. Little is known, however, about the effect of glycosides on the reflex cardiovascular responses to the contraction-induced stimulation of afferent endings in hindlimb skeletal muscle. We therefore examined the reflex heart rate and arterial pressure responses to static contraction of the hindlimb muscles before and after femoral arterial injection of two doses of acetylstrophanthidin (20 and 80 μ/kg). Neither of the two doses enhanced the reflex cardiovascular responses to contraction, although the larger of the two significantly increased femoral venous potassium concentrations from 3·4±0·2 to 3·8±0·1 mM. Although injection of the two doses as well as injection of a very large dose of acetylstrophanthidin (400 μg/kg) increased baseline mean arterial pressure, these effects were probably caused by the vasoconstrictor action of this agent and not by a chemoreflex, because the increase was not attenuated by denervation of the hindlimb.     

Iopamidol and meglumine diatrizoate: comparison of effects on patient discomfort during aortofemoral arteriography

Iopamidol was compared with Renografin-60 (meglumine diatrizoate, Squibb) in a controlled, randomized double-blind study of 40 patients undergoing peripheral arteriography for arteriosclerotic occlusive disease to determine which agent caused less discomfort. Each patient was evaluated for objective signs of discomfort and subjective feelings of pain and heat. Monitoring was achieved by multiple physical examinations, chemical tests, electrocardiograms, and intra-arterial pressure recordings. It is concluded that iopamidol is safe and causes significantly less patient discomfort than Renografin-60.     

Small bowel CT‐enteroclysis: Technique,pitfalls and pictorial review

Computed tomography small bowel enteroclysis has been carried out at Noosa Hospital since July 2003, and more recently at St George Private Hospital, Kogarah. Over 125 cases have been carried out. This article describes the different techniques, the pitfalls and a pictorial review of small bowel pathology.     

Serum apolipoproteins A-I and B in male and female full-term new borns of the Toledo study (Spain)

Cord serum apolipoproteins (Apo) A-I and B from 548 healthy, full-term singletons were studied. Females displayed slightly, but significantly, higher Apo A-I levels ( p < 0.001) than males. Particularly at weeks 38 and 39 ( p < 0.05), whereas Apo B was not gender affected but likewise increased ( p < 0.05) between weeks 37 and 41. Apo A-I values increased ( p < 0.05) with gestational age in males, but with birthweight in females. Results suggest that small gender and age-related metabolic differences exist at birth in terms infants
