Factors related to overweight were examined in a cross-sectional survey that included 1612 women workers from 10 large electronics assembly factories in Peninsular Malaysia. Respondents were Malaysian citizens, direct production workers below the supervisory level, and had worked at least a year in the factory where they were presently employed. Heights and weights were taken to calculate the body mass index (BMI). Weights and BMI increased with increasing age. After adjusting for age, odds ratios for overweight were significantly raised for married women in relation to not married women (OR 1.5, 95% CI=1.15-2.02), lower secondary education in relation to higher than upper secondary education (OR 1.8, 95% CI=1.06-3.14), monthly income RM800-999 (OR 1.7, 95% CI=1.21-2.45) and >/=RM1,000 (OR 1.8, 95% CI=1.23-2.72) in relation to 相似文献

Aldrin-induced stimulation of locomotor activity (LA) under nontolerant conditions was restored to control value after 20 or more consecutive days of aldrin administration. In contrast to the inhibition of GABAergic activity with aldrin under short-term conditions as observed in our previous study, the measurement of steady-state level of GABA, the activities of its metabolizing enzymes, turnover and the specific binding of GABA to its receptor in different regions of the brain of rats treated with aldrin (2 or 5 mg/kg/day, po) under long-term (for 30 consecutive days) conditions showed no change in the GABAergic activity in any regions of the rat brain. Moreover, the studies of the interaction between neurotransmitters (using agonist(s) and antagonist(s) of the respective neurotransmitter receptors) showed that long-term administration of aldrin restored the LA to control value by upregulation of central GABAergic activity through the interaction with dopaminergic and cholinergic systems. Thus, this result suggests that long-term aldrin exposure upregulated the central GABAergic activity inhibition under short-term aldrin treatment which may be a cause of restoration of LA stimulated by the short-term aldrin administration to its control value. 相似文献

Study ObjectivesWe compared the basic cognitive functions of adolescents undergoing split (nocturnal sleep + daytime nap) and continuous nocturnal sleep schedules when total sleep opportunity was either below or within the recommended range (i.e. 6.5 or 8 h).MethodsAdolescent participants (age: 15–19 year) in the 8-h split (n = 24) and continuous (n = 29) sleep groups were compared with 6.5-h split and continuous sleep groups from a previous study (n = 58). These protocols involved two baseline nights (9-h time-in-bed [TIB]), 5 nights of sleep manipulation, 2 recovery nights (9-h TIB), followed by a second cycle of sleep manipulation (3 nights) and recovery (2 nights). Cognitive performance, subjective sleepiness, and mood were evaluated daily; sleep was assessed using polysomnography.ResultsSplitting 6.5 h of sleep with a mid-afternoon nap offered a boost to cognitive function compared to continuous nocturnal sleep. However, when total TIB across 24 h increased to 8 h, the split and continuous sleep groups performed comparably in tests evaluating vigilance, working memory, executive function, processing speed, subjective sleepiness, and mood.ConclusionsIn adolescents, the effects of split sleep on basic cognitive functions vary by the amount of total sleep obtained. As long as the total sleep opportunity across 24 h is within the recommended range, students may fulfill sleep requirements by adopting a split sleep schedule consisting of a shorter period of nocturnal sleep combined with a mid-afternoon nap, without significant impact on basic cognitive functions.Clinical trial registration. Methamphetamine (METH) and many other abused substances interact with σ receptors. σ receptors are found on dopaminergic neurons and can modulate dopaminergic neurotransmission. Antisense knock down of σ receptors also mitigates METH-induced stimulant effects, suggesting that these proteins are viable medication development targets for treating psychostimulant abuse. In the present study, AC927, a σ receptor antagonist, was evaluated for its ability to attenuate METH-induced effects in vivo and in vitro. Radioligand binding studies showed that AC927 had preferential affinity for σ receptors compared to 29 other receptors, transporters and ion channels. Pretreatment of male, Swiss Webster mice with AC927 significantly attenuated METH-induced locomotor stimulation, striatal dopamine depletions, striatal dopamine transporter reductions, and hyperthermia. When the neurotoxicity of METH was further examined in vitro under temperature-controlled conditions, co-incubation with AC927 mitigated METH-induced cytotoxicity. Together, the results demonstrate that AC927 protects against METH-induced effects, and suggests a new strategy for treating psychostimulant abuse. 相似文献

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of arachidonic acid (AA) on calcium mobilization from intracellular compartments in digitonin-permeabilized granulosa cells isolated from the largest preovulatory follicles of laying hens. At low concentrations (ED50 0.2 microM) AA released 35% 45Ca from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), whereas at higher concentrations (ED50 16 microM) it stimulated 45Ca efflux from mitochondria. These effects of AA were mimicked at 10-20 times lower concentration by the calcium ionophore A23187. Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) also stimulated 45Ca efflux from the ER, with a markedly lower potency than AA (ED50 6.2 microM), as well as exhibiting a biphasic response. Heparin abolished the effect of IP3 and luteinizing hormone (LH), but it had no influence on AA-promoted 45Ca efflux. Moreover, the actions of IP3 and AA were additive, indicating that AA and IP3 access different Ca pools in the ER by different mechanisms. Several other unsaturated fatty acids also stimulated 45Ca mobilization from both ER and mitochondria but, with the exception of eicosapentaenoic acid, were significantly less effective than AA. It is concluded that free AA, at submicromolar concentrations that might be viewed as physiological, is a potent calcium mobilizing agent and thus may play an important role in signal transduction in avian granulosa cells, akin to that of IP3. At high (greater than 10 microM) concentrations AA removes Ca2+ from the mitochondria, an action that may be responsible for its reported inhibitory effects on steroidogenesis and other cellular functions. 相似文献

Cocaine's toxicity can be mitigated by blocking its interaction with sigma-1 receptors. The involvement of sigma-2 receptors remains unclear. To investigate their potential role, we have designed compounds through a convergent synthesis utilizing a highly selective sigma-1 ligand and elements of a selective sigma-2 ligand. Among the synthesized compounds was produced a subnanomolar sigma-2 ligand with an 11-fold preference over sigma-1 receptors. In recent years, the use of CFRP with titanium and/or aluminum to form materials for stacking has gained popularity for aircraft construction. In practice, single-shot drilling is used to create perfectly aligned holes for the composite-metal stack. Usually, standard twist drills, which are commonly available from tool suppliers, are used for practical reasons. However, existing twist drill bits exhibit rapid wear upon the drilling of composite-metal stack layers in single shot, due to the widely contrasting properties of the composite-metal stack, which causes poor surface quality. The stringent quality requirements for aircraft component manufacturing demands frequent drill bit replacement and thus incurs additional costs, a concern still unresolved for aircraft component manufacturers. Owing to highly contrasting properties of a composite-metal stack, it is obvious that standard twist drill cannot fulfil the rigorous drilling requirements, as it is pushed to the limit for the fabrication of high-quality, defect-free holes. In this work, customised twist drills of a tungsten carbide (WC) material with different geometric features were specially fabricated and tested. Twenty drill bits with customised geometries of varying chisel edge angle (30–45°), primary clearance angle (6–8°), and point angle (130–140°) were fabricated. The stacked-up materials used in this study was CFRP and aluminum alloy 7075-T6 (Al7075-T6) with a total thickness of 3.587 mm. This study aims to investigate the effect of twist drill geometry on hole quality using drilling thrust force signature as indicator. All drilling experiments were performed at spindle speed of 2600 rev/min and feed rate of 0.05 mm/rev. Design of experiments utilising response surface methodology (RSM) method was used to construct the experimental array. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to study the effect of parameters and their significance to the thrust force and thus the hole quality. The study shows that the most significant parameter affecting the drilling thrust force and hole surface roughness is primary clearance angle, followed by chisel edge angle. Correlation models of CFRP thrust force (Y1), Al7075-T6 thrust force (Y2), CFRP hole surface roughness (Y3), Al7075-T6 hole surface roughness (Y4) as a function of the tool geometry were established. The results indicated that the proposed correlation models could be used to predict the performance indicators within the limit of factors investigated. The optimum twist drill geometry was established at 45° of chisel edge angle, 7° of primary clearance angle, and 130° of point angle for the drilling of CFRP/Al7075-T6 stack material in a single-shot process. The error between the predicted and actual experiment values was between 6.64% and 8.17% for the optimum drill geometry. The results from this work contribute new knowledge to drilling thrust force signature and hole quality in the single-shot drilling of composite-metal stacks and, specifically, could be used as a practical guideline for the single-shot drilling of CFRP/Al7075-T6 stack for aircraft manufacturing. 相似文献
