Objective: Increased physical activity has been tested among patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in a randomized trial which demonstrated improvement in gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. The patients’ experiences of the effects of physical activity on IBS symptoms are unknown. This knowledge is necessary to enable suitable support from health care professionals. The aim of this study was therefore to explore patients’ experiences of the effects of physical activity.

Materials and methods: Deep interviews were conducted with 15 patients (10 women and 5 men) aged 31–78 years. Their IBS had lasted for 10–57 years. The transcribed interviews were analyzed through a qualitative content analysis.

Results: The analysis of the material revealed three themes; GI symptoms, extra-intestinal symptoms, and quality of life (QOL). In relation to GI symptoms, the patients discussed how physical activity affected these symptoms and how they used physical activity to normalize and control their GI symptoms. Extra-intestinal symptoms were also affected by physical activity, and the patients described how they experienced a general bodily wellbeing as well as improved mood and energy in relation to physical activity. In terms of QOL, the patients discussed their perspectives on physical activity as giving them achievements, being pleasurable, and being strengthening of the self.

Conclusions: Our results emphasize the importance of taking into account the patient’s experiences of the effects of physical activity when coaching patients with IBS to be physically active. Using a person-centred approach incorporating, the patient’s own experiences and resources is the key to successfully promoting physical activity in the clinic.  相似文献

A 3-month-old girl presented to the Department of Pediatric Surgery because of a strangled inguinal hernia. The exploration using an inguinal approach showed a blue-reddish, moderately firm, circumscribed subcutaneous mass. Pathologic examination of the resected tissue confirmed the diagnosis of capillary hemangioma. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case of a capillary hemangioma occurring in this location. They provide a review of the current literature on capillary hemangiomas, concluding that despite the rarity of these lesions, they should be considered in the differential diagnosis of lesions in the inguinal location.  相似文献

Tamarix gallica is a halophytic species having hepatotonic and stimulant properties, as it was traditionally used in the treatment of various liver disorders. Leaf and flower infusion have anti-inflammatory and anti-diarrheic proprieties. In this work, we have investigated antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of leaf and flower extracts and their phenolic composition. Results showed that flowers exhibit a higher antioxidant activity as compared to the leaves, IC50 values of the flower extracts are being 1.3 (β-carotene bleaching) to 19 times (lipid peroxidation inhibition) lower than those for leaves. Accordingly, flower extracts exhibited the highest total phenolic content (135.35 mg GAE/g DW) and RP-HPLC analysis showed that syringic acid, isoquercitin as well as catechin were the major phenolics. Furthermore, Tamarix extracts showed appreciable antibacterial properties against human pathogen strains. The mean inhibition zone was from 0 to 6.5 mm when the concentration increased from 2 to 100 mg/l. The strongest activity was recorded against Micrococcus luteus and the lowest activity was observed against Escherichia coli. Moreover, organ extracts show a weakly to moderate activity against the tested Candida. These findings suggest that Tamarix may be considered as an interesting source of antioxidants for therapeutic or nutraceutical industries and for food manufactures.  相似文献

The present study was undertaken to examine the effects of doxorubicin on left ventricular function and cellular energy state in intact isolated hearts, and, to test whether inhibition of mitochondrial membrane potential dissipation would prevent doxorubicin-induced mitochondrial and myocardial dysfunction. Myocardial contractile performance and mitochondrial respiration were evaluated by left ventricular tension and its first derivatives and cardiac fiber respirometry, respectively. NADH levels, mitochondrial membrane potential and glucose uptake were monitored non-invasively via epicardial imaging of the left ventricular wall of Langendorff-perfused rat hearts.Heart performance was reduced in a time-dependent manner in isolated rat hearts perfused with Krebs-Henseleit solution containing 1 μM doxorubicin. Compared with controls, doxorubicin induced acute myocardial dysfunction (dF/dtmax of 105 ± 8 mN/s in control hearts vs. 49 ± 7 mN/s in doxorubicin-treated hearts; ?p < 0.05). In cardiac fibers prepared from perfused hearts, doxorubicin induced depression of mitochondrial respiration (respiratory control ratio of 4.0 ± 0.2 in control hearts vs. 2.2 ± 0.2 in doxorubicin-treated hearts; ?p < 0.05) and cytochrome c oxidase kinetic activity (24 ± 1 μM cytochrome c/min/mg in control hearts vs. 14 ± 3 μM cytochrome c/min/mg in doxorubicin-treated hearts; ?p < 0.05). Acute cardiotoxicity induced by doxorubicin was accompanied by NADH redox state, mitochondrial membrane potential, and glucose uptake reduction. Inhibition of mitochondrial permeability transition pore opening by cyclosporine A largely prevented mitochondrial membrane potential dissipation, cardiac energy state and dysfunction. These results suggest that in intact hearts an impairment of mitochondrial metabolism is involved in the development of doxorubicin cardiotoxicity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1; gene name CCL2) has been suggested to play an important role in the initiation of atherosclerosis by recruiting monocytes to sites of injured endothelium. Recently, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the MCP-1 regulatory region have been identified. Controversial results regarding the association of the -2518G/A polymorphism of the MCP-1 gene with coronary artery disease (CAD) have been reported. In the present study, we examined a possible association between the -2518G/A polymorphism of the MCP-1 gene and myocardial infarction (MI) in a sample of the Tunisian population. METHODS: A total of 319 Tunisian patients with MI and 467 healthy controls were included in the study. The SNP of the MCP-1 gene was determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis. RESULTS: Patients with MI had significantly higher frequency of the AG+GG genotypes compared to controls [42.9% vs. 35.8%; OR (95%CI), 1.34 (1.00-1.79); p=0.04]. The MI patient group showed a significant higher frequency of the G allele compared to the controls [0.242 vs. 0.195; OR (95%CI), 1.31(1.02-1.68), p=0.03]. The association between the -2518G/A polymorphism of the MCP-1 gene and MI was no longer significant after adjustment for other well-established risk factors. CONCLUSION: The present study showed a significant but not independent association between the -2518G/A polymorphism of the MCP-1 gene (presence of G allele) and MI in the Tunisian population.  相似文献
