Prostate cancer may trigger paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis: A case report and a review of the literature

We present a case of a previously healthy and active 64‐year‐old man who experienced a rapid neuropsychiatric decline. All tests for metabolic causes, neuroinfection, intracranial infarction or tumor were negative. By the means of magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography and the anti‐Hu antibody test the patient was diagnosed with paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis related to prostate cancer. The patient died within 6 months. We review the literature on prostate cancer‐related paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis. High‐risk prostate cancer can trigger paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis, a rapidly progressive neurological syndrome with a bad prognosis.     

Spindle Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx with Rhabdomyoblastic Heterologous Element: A Rare Form of Divergent Differentiation

Spindle cell (sarcomatoid) carcinoma of the larynx is a rare subtype of squamous cell carcinoma that shows a prominent spindle cell component with a mesenchymal phenotype. Heterologous elements may be seen in these spindled areas and usually consist of osteosarcomatous or chondrosarcomatous differentiation. We describe an unusual spindle cell carcinoma of the vocal cord in a 68 year old male which demonstrated rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation as confirmed by desmin and myogenin immunoreactivity. Thus rhabdomyosarcomatous differentiation adds to the phenotypic spectrum of spindle cell carcinomas of the larynx and should be considered before invoking a diagnosis of true rhabdomyosarcoma of the larynx.     

Overview of Dietary Supplements in Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a key health concern for men with its etiology still under investigation. Recently, the role of dietary supplements has been noted to have a major inhibitory effect on prostate cancer and numerous studies have been conducted in this regard. This review provides a summary on numerous recent studies conducted in this field. Some of the studies reviewed revealed a protective role for supplements, and others showed no correlation while some even had an adverse effect. The mechanism of how these supplements act on the prostate is still not clear. Further studies are warranted especially for supplements that have been shown to have a potential inhibitory role in prostate cancer.     

Imaging of pediatric liver tumors: A COG Diagnostic Imaging Committee/SPR Oncology Committee White Paper

Primary hepatic malignancies are relatively rare in the pediatric population, accounting for approximately 1%–2% of all pediatric tumors. Hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma are the most common primary liver malignancies in children under the age of 5 years and over the age of 10 years, respectively. This paper provides consensus-based imaging recommendations for evaluation of patients with primary hepatic malignancies at diagnosis and follow-up during and after therapy.
