The effect of social network on burden and pessimism in relatives of patients with schizophrenia

The authors explored the social network of caregivers of patients with schizophrenia in relation to relatives' sociodemographic characteristics, patients' clinical variables, family burden, and pessimism about the consequences of the disease. They evaluated 709 key relatives of patients with schizophrenia concerning the above-mentioned variables by means of well-validated questionnaires. A more supportive social network was found in relatives who reported lower levels of burden and pessimism about schizophrenia. The effect of social network on relatives' burden and opinions about schizophrenia was significantly different in relation to relatives' gender. Strengthening the relatives' social network may represent a useful strategy to alleviate their burden and pessimism about schizophrenia.     

Dietary intake and blood folate levels in Honduran women of childbearing age

Neural tube defects are common birth defects, the frequency of which appears to be reduced by maternal supplementation and/or fortification of folic acid. Latin Americans have a high incidence of neural tube defects. We surveyed the dietary intake of Honduran women of childbearing age using a 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire in inner-city, town, and country areas. We randomly checked blood folate in the surveyed population to compare to the normal range for the US population. Normal US recommended dietary allowance intake of folate was documented in association with a low intake of many other essential nutrients. There also were significant differences for nutrient intakes in city, town, and country areas. Blood folate levels in all locations were in the low normal range when compared to the presupplementation/prefortification US population. Our data support using an established folic acid fortification public health initiative to decrease the prevalence of neural tube defects in Honduras.     

Absent otoacoustic emissions predict otitis media in young Aboriginal children: A birth cohort study in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal children in an arid zone of Western Australia

Background  

Otitis media (OM) is the most common paediatric illness for which antibiotics are prescribed. In Australian Aboriginal children OM is frequently asymptomatic and starts at a younger age, is more common and more likely to result in hearing loss than in non-Aboriginal children. Absent transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) may predict subsequent risk of OM.
