Localization of intracranial lesions utilizing the coronal suture as a landmark on axial computed tomography

The superior portion of the coronal suture is often easily identified by appropriately setting the window width and level of the CT scanner's display system. It provides a valuable and practical reference point for the localization of intracranial lesions, particularly those above the level of the lateral ventricles, where fewer anatomical landmarks are available when using computed tomography.

Evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea by metrizamide computed tomographic cisternography

Seven interesting and instructive cases of cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea evaluated by metrizamide computed tomographic cisternography are presented. The rhinorrhea was spontaneous in three patients and was related to previous head trauma or surgical procedures in four patients. The anatomical site and the extent of the fistula were demonstrated precisely by directly showing metrizamide passing through the bony defect. A combination of bone dehiscence and metrizamide within the adjacent paranasal sinuses or the nasal cavity is also useful in localization. Distortion of the interhemispheric fissure, sylvian fissure, or basal sulci indicates the probability of brain herniation through the defect.     

The effect of systox on ionic fluxes in excised barley roots

The influence of various concentrations of the thiol isomer of Systox on ionic fluxes in excised barley roots was investigated. For purposes of comparison, treatments with DNP alone, or in combination with the Systox isomer, were included.Rb and Cl absorption, regardless of the external salt concentrations, were progressively reduced as the Systox concentration in the external solution increased. Treatment with Systox did not result in any appreciable increase in the efflux rates of Rb or Cl ions.DNP treatment enhanced the efflux of Rb but not of Cl. The increased efflux was too small to account for the reduced net uptake. A comparison of individual and combined effects of Systox and DNP on ion absorption indicated an independent action of the two inhibitors.     

Habitual dislocation of the hip. A new, simple classification and report of a case

Habitual dislocation of the hip occurred in a nine-year-old girl. The nomenclature of the literature on this disorder and other related conditions is confusing. The following simple classification is therefore proposed: (1) recurrent dislocation (posttraumatic, nonvoluntary); (2) voluntary dislocation (nonhabitual, associated with ligamentous laxity or paralytic disease); (3) habitual dislocation (not associated with significant ligamentous laxity). The treatment significantly differs in each of the described conditions. The diagnosis of habitual dislocation precludes correct interpretation of the history and physical examination.     

Determination of residual solvents and investigation of their effect on ampicillin trihydrate crystal structure

In the present work, the relationship between residual solvents concentration and ampicillin trihydrate crystals stability has been investigated. The amounts of residual solvents determined by GC, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used for characterization of solid state. The obtained results have shown good relationship between concentration of methylene chloride (as a critical residue solvent) and degree of ampicillin trihydrate crystallinity. As with the increasing methylene chloride concentration in the sample the degree of crystallinity decreased after stability test. From this relationship, critical concentration of methylene chloride into the ampicillin trihydrate is obtained and the results can be used for improving the large-scale production of ampicillin trihydrate.     

Synthesis with improved yield and study on the analgesic effect of 2-hydroxyphencyclidine

Phencyclidine (1-(1-phenylcyclohexyl)piperidine, CAS 956-90-1, PCP) has shown analgesic effects. Some of its derivatives have been synthesized and their biological properties were studied. Since a hydroxyl group has been added to the position 2 of the cyclohexane ring of PCP, this compound would be more hydrophilic than PCP. This compound was synthesized using a different and improved method with a higher yield. Its analgesic effect was studied using the tail-flick test on rats and was compared with that of ketamine (CAS 1867-66-9). The results showed that 2-hydroxyphencyclidine can increase tail-flick latencies as compared to the control group and indicate that the maximum analgesic effect of this compound occurs 2-5 min after its injection while the effect of ketamine is observed 10-25 min after injection.
